The Beatles “We can Work it out” is a great example of going from quarter to dotted eight notes. At least that’s how I think of it. When it gets to that “so I will ask you once again” part, Ringo goes to a beat that’s 3/4ths of the regular beat of the song. So when thinking about how to tap in dotted eighth notes based on the quarter note, I just play a version of ‘We can Work it out’ in my head that’s in beat with the song I’m playing and then I jump into the “ask you once again” part to get the dotted eighth note tapped in properly.

If anyone's interested in hearing an album that is basically built around this technique, Angels And Airwaves' "We Don't Need to Whisper" basically uses it on 90% of the tracks. The music might not be to everyone's taste but they do use the 8th note delay in very interesting ways !

Tom started experimenting with Boss DD-6 Digital Delay on the Box Car Racer album, used to experiment with Boss BF-3 Flanger on the self-titled Blink-182 album. So Angels & Airwaves is a tribute to U2 and The Cure as part of their influence. The other side is his punk legacy.

margix that sound is Steve Lillywhite ergo Johnny Marr , The Edge or charlie Burchill. The edge got his big break by discovering harmonics and balanced conflicting delays that then expanded while working with Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois and Michael Brook. Then working with Flood he started working with cv controlled lfo controlled arp odyssey like modules. Of course he works with his own technician so it’s been awhile since he has done his own shoegazing

Cheers.

Great explanation Paul. I learned this technique a very long time ago, when delays were explained to me by a few great producers years and years ago. It not easy sometimes for beginners to "get" how delay timing works, and how the dotted eight note works with delays. SO many artists use this and its great when you find a way to explain it so that players actually understand and can make really god use of the delay, instead of just finding cool stuff...LOL If that makes sense. Great vid.. this will help a TON of people figure out great sounds and patterns...I bet the sale of delays just spiked!..
