And in just a few short years, Tom becomes vital to the family. Even Robert thinks of him as a son. Sybil was not only kind & humble, but wise beyond her years. She loved him for who he was, but knew he was meant to be more.

@@HistoryBusiness16Cora herself had no rank until she got married. When Cora came of age there were a large number of rich Americans whose parents wanted to give validity to their money by marrying their daughters into the aristocracy. And since there were quite a few aristocratic estates that were starting to run out of my net, the Aristocracy welcomed it, if only to save their dying way of life. Later in the series we see the estate struggle to survive, something Tom helped with. But it's not surprising that Cora was more upset about them living together unmarried than Tom not being of the right station. Her own father probably grew up working class or "middle class". Her family would have been considered "new rich" and hardly better than the working class.

Cora was always so subtle. Where I might yell in anger she would lower her voice and hiss her words. Here she conveys at least the same amount of shock and anger as Robert but instead of pacing around the room she opens her wides wide, then raises her eyebrows. Such a LADY!

Practically every character had a decent arc. Violet and Isabel start out cold to each other and became best friends. Barrow, my gawd, what all he went through is too much to mention here. Poor middle child Edith, unlucky in love ends up a Marchioness. Grand Mary settles for race car driver. The strength of this series is that we had so many threads to follow, so many lives to watch all with the backdrop of history behind them.

Back in that time until you were married you lived with and listened to your patriarch lol

Sybil is a full grown adult who is acting like an impulsive teenager. Her family is reasonably worried that she is making a profound mistake in marrying the chauffeur. The Chauffeur! What part of that are you unable to understand?

At that time, the best single women were submissive to their parents before getting married. Regardless of age.

it's not about age or anything. it's about her marrying way beneath her status to a servant! a huge scandal at the time. They would pop champagne if she wanted to marry a rich Duke 15 years older than her.

As well known as the Dowager is for her strong opinions, what makes her truly formidable is her ability to convey to others how well she can suss things out.
