It can be an expensive hobby! Not to mention all the other things you used to love to do just don’t seem to matter as much. In this video, I give some light hearted reasons why riding and enjoying motorcycling as a hobby can suck!

Anyone who calls a dude in proper gear on a cruiser a "poser" is probably one themselves and can suck it. I ride a Harley big twin. I also wear a full-face helmet, a proper armored race jacket, armored gloves and reinforced boots. I wear that stuff because I need that protection when I'm putting ten times as much mileage under me as the rolling-stereotype leather daddies who putt-putt-putt between the local Starbucks and their favorite bar to complain about how "posers" like me are "ruining" the motorcycle industry. WE ARE THE INDUSTRY.

You are not the "poser". But, posers exist. And they are great for buying low mileage bikes at lower prices. Just bought a 2002 Shadow for $1300, had 7000kms on the odometer. Turns out cruisers aren't really my thing, but at least I know, and it will have twice the mileage when sold on.

Not a cruiser guy, but I owned a 2007 Vulcan for about 25k miles. I prefer closed face helmets with a chin bar. Had a textile jacket and a full face helmet. Didn’t care who liked it. My other ride was a CBR at the time and I only had so much gear...
@KickstandOptional

@@DrTranofEvil that's the thing, though, ain't it. When it comes down to it a lot of the "poser" hate comes from financial elitism - guys who can throw tons of money around for all the toys and lifestyle accessories and different stuff for each of their bikes, looking down on the people who just buy the thing they need one time regardless of what's fashionable.

His voice is so mellow and chill, like Sam Elliot. No extra nonsense. You can hear the genuine enjoyment of riding in each word. I subscribed immediately. I’m 38 and just started riding. Will hopefully buy my first bike this offseason to have ready for next spring...and I’m a little hesitant because of my age. This guy has completely changed that for me. I can wait to start riding.

Been on 2 wheels for 8 years. I have a truck gathering dust. It desperately needs tires. Put $1000 into replacing the tires on two of my bikes instead. I have four helmets (field of vision can be huge in traffic, I live in a Simpson Street Bandit these days), I cycle my gear every two years because the constant rain in the PNW ages my gear rapidly. My last jacket, the pocket pulled back with my hand. I have summer/ fall-spring and winter gear. My backpack is my trunk. Got into motorcycles in my 30s after my divorce and burning out at college (while working full time)... saved my sanity. I’ll be on two wheels until my body is too broken to climb on...

I've been riding since I was 15 and turned 63 yesterday. All the things you talk about every rider has experienced over and over again. It's nice to here someone like you talk about it so we know we're normal. I intend to be riding for quite sometime yet. The rides sometimes get shorter as aches & pains come and hopefully go but the same feeling is there on every ride! If I had all the money I spent on gear, parts and new bikes I'd be financially stable, but I'm not, however being mentally stable is a good alternative. That said, I'm still saving for a new Indian Chief. Great video, be safe and hope you have the passion for many years. Thanks

Really have to agree with you on all those points. I've gotten so bad that I will use the excuse of being out of soda or wanting to rent a movie just to gear up and take the bike out to go grocery shopping. It's really sad. Get a lot of funny looks when you've got two 12 packs of soda bungied to the rear seat of your vulcan s, but at least I get to enjoy the ride(and save a lot of gas doing so). Seriously awesome channel. You're like an older version of myself - same opinions, same exact bike(except mine is a bit of a white eyesore), same hobbies. Subbed. The down to earth content, beautiful sights/views of your rides, and casual conversations are something I will look forward to revisiting your channel for.

Gret video and great topic. I've always had a good relationship with my motorcycle insurance agent. Over the years he's kept me updated on one of his awesome clients. She's a lady, now in her 90s, who has ridden bikes since the 50s. Not only that but it has been her sole source of transportation. No cages at all! And she lives in the hot south. I hope to be that cool one day.

You don’t have to worry about that. Getting old. Riding forces you to keep in shape. That riding gear is expensive! We can’t turn into big ol fatties. You have to keep trim and make sure you fit in to all that expensive gear you got. Riding keep you sharp in mind. Forces you to be alert. Talk to some of these older riders. They are quick on the uptake. No fading flower here!

Hello, dear friend! Another motorcycle enthusiast in here as well :) As expected, I am quite new in the industry, but I am really willing to learn properly. All the horror stories that you hear about crashes and how vulnerable you are on the road, that shit ain't scare me homie! Hahaha. I really feel that if you're taking the required precautions you're ready to go. Indeed, it takes time and it takes practice, patience and a loooot of love for this lifestyle. I am so grateful that in this century is really easy to find online the answers to all of the questions you've got.. but learning something online as important as your life, it needs to be done properly. The way you explain everything , the passion that you've got for motorbikes and life itself it brings me to tears. It's almost unbelievable how some stranger express himself in a way that you can actually relate and emphasize 100%. Well done, my friend, well done. Stay safe and enjoy life!

Been riding my whole life and now I'm 65. Just recently I've been able to plan a trip that I've always wanted to do but life got in the way. Kids always needed something the wife isn't into riding, work and the list goes on. Now I've just retired and been planning this 3 to 4 week trip around the country...alone...just me, myself and I. Then 2 weeks ago I got vertigo and going to see a specialist in 3 more weeks. All I can think about is what if this can't be cured. The one biggest thing I wanted to do before I die may have just been flushed down the toilet. I'm almost in tears writing this...big baby that I am! My advice, do it sooner than later. Don't be like me and put it off because tomorrow may never come...At 7 min. mark on really hit home for me!

Hey Man, love your mid-life attitude! Been riding dirt/trail since being an early teen & rode street for a cpl years ‘67, ‘68 & ‘69. I turned 70 in October, having got my ‘05 Sportster XL1200c in Aug.’16 (at 66). Point is when people ask why I decided to ride street again I tell m, “Well I guess I’m in an “End-of-Life crisis”! What’ve I got to lose besides Stress & Depression !? Instead of worrying about all that a homeowner, husband , father & grandfather does I just hop on ‘Brenda’ for a nice long hour or two back road trip at or below speed limits, enjoying scenery & waving at everyone 👍😎 If not on a Fixed income I’d have better gear but Ikust do the best I can with what I’ve got Or, can find at Thrift stores. Don’t ever stop riding if y’all are able to. It’ll add years onto your life AND if you’re lucky & safe , riding will allow you to Enjoy the time you’ve left here on God’s beautiful creations. Amen brother 👍🙏🏻✝️

I’ve done all what you’ve shared bro! And i was smiling while watching your video... Yup, at times it feels like it sucks but come to think of it, it’s actually pure enjoyment & pleasure for having been given the chance to hop on two wheels. I had nine bikes already, 5 small bikes starting with 125 cc, then three 150cc, & one 250cc dirt bike... Then i jumped to 400cc honda, then 750cc honda shadow, then a to a Kawasaki Z 1000, then downgraded to 400cc nk 400 (disappointed with its power) i ended up with Vulcan S 650... I’m happy & felt blessed for having had to ride all those bikes (big & small). I sold the other bikes i couldnt ride any longer & just retained my Yamaha serrow 250 & Vulcan S. Having been a rider for quite a long time boosts my spirit... And it definitely casts away all sorts of negativity... KEEP RIDING & JUST BE ALWAYS THANKFUL FOR THE SAFE RIDE... Our smiles out of it would surely make the Giver smile just the same... 😊😁😊

Been riding for 3 months, consider watching KZfaq motovloggers as part of the training scheme. Just found your channel - at 54 I'm right in your 'older rider' demographic and this being my first time around with bikes I get everything that you are talking about. Including the experience of 'first ride on a buddies bent bike as a teenager' in your other vid. GAS is real. Multiple-bike buying urges is a definite thing. Weather pattern 5-days-good-2-days-bad is a phenomenon, and we know which days of the week the 2 fall on! Keep up the great work, but above all keep riding till they take the keys away from ya. I am looking right down the barrel of life and am now 75. I have ridden bikes all my life and owned just about every kind except a Harley. Just could never get into that 40 year old technology at crazy inflated prices. Never needed to feel included into a social club either. Not Harley bashing, just not my cup of tea. Now that I am at that age, I can pretty well do what I want to, so what did I do? Just bought two (2) new 2019 Honda Goldwings. A red one, and a black one. My reasoning? If one breaks down, I have a spare. Sometimes my son visits and he rides with me. Planning a trip to Big Bend area next. So now, just waiting for the weather to get better. I do have my limits.

Regularly riding my VulcanS for 2 years. My VS is already 38,000km mileage at it. I don’t have single mechanical problem on my VS. I have 3 helmets all are full faces, two Arai and one Shoei. A Cruiser is my daily ongoing machine, I ride it for commuting, shopping and touring to the border with Mongolia and China. It is not as agile as a standard bike. But it is comfortable to riding distance and daily use. Cheers.

I’m a big 6’2 250 lbs ,58 years next week. I can only fit right on a full size bike.. mine is 2008 Suzuki Boulevard C90T 1500cc 750 pound bike..BAGGER! Big fenders..sissy bar! I love it... only want maybe a Goldwing to reply it some day. I spent a lot on gear.. pair of chaps.. never used yet, waiting for a cold weather ride. I got three pairs of gloves, four helmets, 6 -8 pairs glasses. Back up battery, jump starter, Fix a flat.. tools to help me get home, case I break Down.broke down twice, same problem , I didn’t fix right first time. All in two weeks. Since then I get no problems. I let a pro fix my adrenaline machine, and now I let him do all but my air filter and oil changes, rear axle gear oil.( drive shaft)

When you get hurt or get too old to hold up the two wheelers, then you can move into trikes. In the can-am spyder world. We have folks who had an accident and ended up in wheel chairs riding spyders. Wind therapy is good and the trikes let you get that when two wheels are not possible anymore. I got hurt on a two wheeler, so I ride my spyder now. I can tour, do twisties, group ride and do just about any type of on road riding I want. Yes we don't counter steer nor lean as much, and initially it feels wrong, but once you get used to it it's a blast. My delta trike can keep up with baggers and cruisers without a problem

Here's one that very often troubles me to no end. When you've got on and off sinus problems. You'll be riding along and then for some reason the tap between your eyes turns on. It's not like you can reach for tissues like in a car, and if you pull over to wait it out you'll be waiting for possibly hours. It's one of the more disgusting problems you could have to deal with.

You hit the nail right on the head. I just bought my first Harley it's like riding on a fire bolt..im in hell (Texas). It's so damn hot 3 digits, but I still ride not alot like I would like. The traffic is so bad.i gotta pick the right time to ride. The riding it keeps me sane good therapy.Ride on and be safe.

Began riding at 58 years old, now I'm 62 and a female too. I love my Vulcan S and sure there's other bikes out there that I'd love to own, but I'm totally satisfied with my bike. However everything you mentioned in your video is spot on. My husband and I spend our weekends taking day trips, but the riding season is so short here in Western New York. Looks as if you reside somewhere out west, so, "cheer up" because I'm sure you have a longer season than we do which is about 6 months if we're lucky.

Thanks for your story! Don’t get me wrong, I do very much like my Vulcan, too.! It’s all in good fun! Here, we can sometimes get in 8-9 months of riding, weather permitting. Depending on snow, gravel on the roads because of snow...etc.

Whoa... this video is gold. I can relate to it far to much. Work was interfering with my riding time so I retired 2 years ago with 7 bikes and one ATV. Thought I had enough. Now I have 9 bikes and 2 ATV. What nobody told me about retirement is you have more time to look at and buy more bikes. It's a sickness you see.

Been riding 36 years been reading the same motorcycle that I bought new 22 years ago. Still have the same jacket from 25 years ago in the same helmet from 25 years ago. I did find a badass pair of zip up, calf high boots that i don't have to lace up and tie everytime , at a thrift store for $15. made by" banks" . so no , not everyone has to fall victem to peer pressure or "fabulous" ads for shit u don't need. i actually like what i have and don't desire more. idk , just my experience. bikes like boats can be money sucking vacuums if u let them but just remember , sometimes less is more. less to go wrong , less to worry and stress over. but of course i ride a metric bike so i don't have constant parts and labor costs of a harley. lol ( really loud laugh!) in 22 years and 70k miles of owning my current suzuki , i've only got 8 k invested and thats buying the bike new and all maintenance and upgrades. (all done by me , no other mech ever touched my bike) if you take care of stuff and buy quality in the first place , you can have a nice bike until your dead for cheap.

I get the getting too old or injured thing. Riding is one of the few things i can still do . It sucks that we get old and i can’t pick my bike up anymore. I dropped my last bike cause my hip locked up and i couldn’t pick it up. Poor circulation in my legs keeps me from being able to ride the way i should and dirt bikes are already history for me. But it is great that i can ride even though i have trouble going to the mailbox.

It’s a decision we will all have to make, when the time comes. I could be forced to stop tomorrow, or in 40 years...who knows. However, if I can’t ride on two, I’ll ride on three. Lots of great bikes like the CanAm or the three wheel offerings from Harley out there.

Most satisfying? Get a 1000cc naked with a touring fairing.....You can have all this at the same time: 1) Go FAST or ACCELERATE almost like a crotch rocket. This will take any negative thoughts you may have, as this is the most likely you will feel to DYING and enjoying it at the same time. 2) Have some decent HANDLING, unlike a cruiser. Although your cruiser is the most sporting in its class for sure. 3) Be COMFORTABLE during long range trips. 4) Can take a passenger. 1000 cc too expensive? Go down to 600-650 naked (oh wait, you have something kind of like it). For many of us, still $2K more expensive? Get a Kawasaki Z400 naked, it is highway passing speed worthy. Last but not least, keep the Vulcan S, put that fairing on and maybe make a few exhaust mods. It is a pretty satisfying ride in its own right.
