The Talladega fall 2014 Qualifying session was a total cluster.

At Las Vegas earlier this year, late in the final qualifying round, all 12 drivers bunched up, and everyone completed 2 laps before the clock ran out...... except for Alex Bowman & Chase Elliott, they didn't complete there lap on time, when they both had the fastest laps, their laps got taken away, giving Kevin Harvick the pole.

I think group qualifying has it's place. That place is on superspeedways. I like single car qualifying everywhere else because it showcases the entire teams effort in building and setting up the car. I think group qualifying at Daytona and Talladega is fine since single car takes so long, but everywhere else, show the entire team effort instead of just showing which driver happens to get a sniff of draft at just the right time.

Dad and I were at the fall Talladega race and qualifying was way more entertaining because you understood what was happening, no shoving around, got to get drivers autographs as they walked from the garages to their cars, and then the racing was great too

I'm shocked there wasn't a very bad accident during qualifying for the 2014 July Daytona Cup race. There were cars coasting on the banking at less than 50 mph while there were still cars running nearly full speed on track

Group qualifying is great for road courses to speed up the process so they can get to other activities that afternoon, (not to mention, give drivers who run in Xfinity Series or Truck Series races time to fly to the track that they're at in order to get there in time to start the race) but on the oval tracks, it should simply the single-car qualifying where they line up fastest time to slowest time.

How group qualifying should work for NASCAR: Every session should be 15 minutes long. The checkered flag means that you cannot complete another lap, but if a lap is in progress while the checkers fly, you can complete that lap. For round 1, Drivers in positions 1-20 will move to Q2. Drivers in positions 21-40 start in the position they are in. Round 2- Drivers in positions 1-10 move on to the final round, while 11-20 place drivers start where they qualified. Round 3- the top ten fight for pole. Road courses- Yellow flags only come out on a certain sector where an accident took place, and if the driver fails to slow, they get a grid penalty. So, it’s nearly the same as F1 qualifying.

See. For all the ovals this was a really dumb way to do things, but I do like it for road courses because as F1 has shown, it works on those types of circuits.

Single car qualifying is my favorite part. Nobody crashes you. Nobody holds you up. There are no team tactics. Qualifying order should always be random. And make qualifying more important. Give them 10% of the total race points. Get rid of the Chase. I know it is to keep tv interest but it's not fun to watch. I like the race segments but award each segment significant points and a portion of the overall purse. Make it worthwhile for teams to try to be up front.

Always preferred single car Q over group. Qualifying was never meant to be a "show" (other than the duels) and this was a classic example of taking a system that wasn't broken, trying to fix it...and breaking it. Glad we went back.

Honestly, I loved group qualifying, these drivers would just rather play chicken instead of doing their fucking job. We can agree that doing it on super-speedways weren't the best idea (especially the Daytona 500 when they already had their own qualifying races), but not going out there all because the draft was gonna come into there is just some cowardly bullshit. Now we're back to boring as shit qualifying where it would have been more acceptable in the time Nascar was healthy, but now it CLEARLY isn't, and there needed to be some excitement even for qualifying to bring up some attention, but nope, they chickened out and Fridays are just nothing days again. What a load of shit. Might as well not air Qualifying whatsoever on TV except on road courses.

The issue at California was more about the new rules package and the cars being more dependent on drafting than group qualifying. They need to get rid of this package.

Group qualifying is a joke. They might as well run two races. Theres no reason qualifying should be that risky for teams and their cars. Yet another example of NASCAR doing whatever they can to try and make races more spectator friendly, the heart of the sport be damned

Well, group qualifying works perfectly fine except when the draft comes into play. Once the plate tracks were moved to single-car sessions, everything was peachy for years, until the package had an element of the draft to it; that's when everything fell apart. So it's a good system and should come back maybe for the Next-Gen car if there isn't any draft complications with that. It's annoying to see how everyone was content with it at most tracks until this year, when everything got absolutely blown out of the water.

Group quail only works on Road Courses. INDYCAR does groups on road courses and single car on ovals.

Single Car Qualifying. That group car shit was cool for about 20 minutes. NASCAR tried...but the teams found a way to circumvent things and it exposed the holes in the idea. Qualifying isn't suppose to be exciting.... NASCAR making it more important than the damn race makes this one of NASCAR's biggest duh-huh moments ever....and I've been a fan since the late 80's.

There was nothing wrong with this system, except for the fact that the drivers themselves made a mockery of it by standing on Pit Road to the last minute which was total BS. What the television at the time did not explain to the people is that the drivers were being told to stand on Pit Road by their owners and their crew chiefs if they just would have gone out and qualified like they had before there wouldn't have been any problem. Obviously the problems at Daytona and Talladega should have never happen because yes that should have been single car qualifying all along. I still have not heard an apology from the drivers crew chiefs and owners over what happened at California and Texas this season which in my opinion is total BS.

How it should have been done. Ten minutes to go ten laps. One minute to hit the track or DQ. Average slow and fast lap. No more slow laps. Problem solved.

Group qualifying was an idea that had one goal in mind and it never achieved that goal. Only made the drivers, teams, and NASCAR as a whole look like a clown show. It's amazing it took so long to kill it at the oval tracks, and I think they outta kill it at the road courses too.

Might have been the most embarrassing moment for the higher ups at NASCAR. Every sport makes bad callls all the time sure. Nascar has made some stupid rule changes but this was the icing of the cake. NASCAR cried that the teams were protesting. Nascar claimed single car qualifying was boring. (I don't think fans ever cared about qualifying entertainment lol). Such a non issue that didn't need any drastic change to fix it. But they kept trying to make it work. It was hilariously embarrassing

Man if Big Bill knew what Brian did to his sport... I imagine he's rolling over in his grave. They changed the points because of Matt Kenseth running away with the title with 1 win and just had to do something different. I hate they did away with the winston million and the no bull 5(they could have changed the name for the sake of it.) Stage races if done right in the right scenario is fun to watch. Short track stage racing like on dirt or heat races and main races would be fun to watch. The stage racing they have now came from the all star race and is fun for that but its ass regular races. You don't see NASCAR implementing the all star qualifying set up for the 36 other races. I think NASCAR can fix this and come back pretty good but the days of NASCAR being 2001-2006 big is not gonna happen.

I personally like the fact that single car qualifying is finally coming back. For Ovals, group qualifying doesn't make sense at all, but for road courses it makes at least some sense.

I don't think group qualifying works on ovals (it sometimes doesn't work on road courses either see Q3 from this years F1 Italian GO) and single car qualifying should be the way to go. I'd this comment is being read in the future then see 2019 Italian GP for the reference I made earlier
