As a former Sapper who served from 1990 - 2013 it is a sad story to see just how much the British Armed Forces have shrunk to what is basicly a Defence Force.

We may have 2 Aircraft Carriers but they seem to keep breaking down, and our entire fleet of Type 45 Destroyers were in dock because the engines over heated in Mediterranean waters.

When the conservative David Cameron got into 10 Downing Street in 2010, he wanted to cancel the 2 carriers, but such were the air-tight cancellation clauses with the builders, it was more economical to just build the damm things.

Well even back then that 1200 tanks was a theoretical number because a lot of them were Chieftains which usually had around 85% of them off the road because they were utterly terrible. This is what happens when you get British Leyland to design a tank engine for you!

I served between 1966-82 - The rot started even before I joined. I was brought up on miitary bases in a variety of places worldwide. Now we couldn't get a platoon to the Isle of Man in an emergency.

I served with British forces when I was an American soldier in Berlin and West Germany--and for Operation Iraqi Freedom II. The dramatic shrinkage in this video is depressing--can Britain defend itself if one of its neighbors becomes conquest-happy?

Don't agree. The British forces are more powerful than ever. Royal Navy did not have any Aircraft carriers and now has two. Lots of new frigates and other shops. 8 new more lethal nuclear submarines. The air force has never been so good as now with both the Typhoon and F35 aircraft.Army getting more Tanks and other equipment with Challenger 3 and the new Ajax family of APC armoured vehicles. Everything gets replaced every thirty years and we're beefing up.

I agree that we are getting more advanced and more lethal equipment which is good, but our numbers are dropping in personnel and equipment, all down to the government and not wanting to spend more money unfortunately.

@@Trooptalk17 Correct it's numbers and morale which is plummetting. There's also the question of what we are going to mount on those machines we're getting. Hands up all those who remember us getting the Apache and then the government saying we would not be getting the guns for them in order to same money!!!!! This is nothing new either. I can remember being in Germany in the mid '70's when we were walking around with boots with holes in them because the Army refused to buy new boots. Nothing has changed - wordsmithing politicians who know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

The British army was funded by colonial ventures. Before colonialism the British were an irrelevant nation that couldn't field a full time army. Now that we are in a truly post colonial era, the UK is going to look more like an irrelevant Balkan state

@@lolwutyoumad - Amazing analysis. The UN( they wouldn’t lie would they ) has just named the UK the 4th largest exporter in the world ( up from 7th) and largest manufacturer in the world ( up from 11th). A month ago it was named the second most influential “ soft power” country brand in the world by an internationally respected financial brand auditor. This was based on 177 thousand surveys worldwide of CEO’s , FDIC investors , worldwide credit analysts , NGO’s , and foreign diplomatic corps views. It is still the 5/6th largest economy in the world and 3rd by military power projection capabilities.( despite cuts ) and a Nuclear power with a permanent seat on the UN Security Council . I’m no t saying it doesn’t have problems. Which country doesn’t.? But Serbia , North Macedonia, Kosovo , Greece, Bulgaria it ain’t . Whatever your sad sack problem is , perhaps you should look at the facts rather than the chips on your shoulders next time . Jeez you’re sad. And the fact you have a vote is even sadder. If you are from the UK and can vote?
