Im sure the real Wolsey was a corrupt, vicious, back-stabbing man who only sought to serve himself, but Sam Neil made me feel soooo sorry for the character.

He was loyal to his underlings and did what he could to spare them to suffer from his downfall. Judge him by that if you will.

Probably because Cardinal Wolsey was no more corrupt, vicious, back-stabbing, and self-serving than numerous other people in Henry's court at the time. You cannot honestly think there were not others either just as bad or worse.

@@xyPERSON Oh i dont doubt they ALL were as bad as each other, but this portrayal by SN, makes you really feel pity for the character, but maybe not so for the real historical figure huh.

Sam Neill was great as Wolsey.

I think it might be his best and most nuanced performance. Dr. Grant is his most iconic role to be sure, but I think Wolsey is his best and most powerful.

Wolsey and Moore were top class. Wolsey was worldly. Moore was moral. Cromwell just an ass.

When Cromwell tore up the letter from Woolsey, I knew he would tap my faith when he got his own downfall

They all incurred the wrath of Henry. Even Brandon, and Norfolk was only days away from execution when Henry died.

@Julie S. Yes. Henry sentenced Norfolk to death the day before Henry died. When Henry died, Norfolk was released having nearly been executed.

*Brandon: exiled from Court for a while for marrying Mary (Henry's sister) without consent. He had been restored to Henry's good graces. *Earl of Surrey: Norfolk's heir apparent, executed for treason near the end of Henry's reign. *Norfolk: survived only because Henry died before his execution order could be signed. *Thomas Boleyn: his wife died shortly after his two children were executed. He was exiled from Court and died shortly after his wife.

last year, I was so surprised , I was walking my dog and met a man, we started to talk about some things in general , after a while I told him I was reading the Hilary Mantel novel about Cromwels'life ... and this man that was perfectly "common" told me at once "between More and Cromwell, I much prefer More because he went to the end of his ideas and died for them" sorry for my approx English, I am French sometime people are so surprising, never thought that man was an erudite !
