What better way to kick off a Monday than to talk about the dreaded 10 pin? Mo discusses the how and the why they happen and what different bowler styles can do in order to stop leaving them. (so often)

Hi Mo! Great Video on the dreaded 10 pin leave. As a senior bowler at 78 years league bowling the last 2 years. Since I last bowled 45 years ago, I am learning there is a huge amount of both technology and language out there. You video mentions many terms I am not yet familiar with. Let me get to my issue before understanding the terms you used. I start my approach on the second row of arrows from the back. My strike target is the 13-15 board from my approach left foot on the 27 board. My ball is a pin up "Storm" 14.8 pound ball 3 fingered aggressive. It hooks nicely when everything is in sync. I am averaging about 160 with my high game 244. My first 2 games in league play yesterday had but one 10 pin leave per game. I converted each. My third game, I left 7 frames of 10 with the 6 and 10 pin combination standing solid on my first ball. Can you help me understand what caused this please?

Can someone (preferably someone-s) explain to me what *exactly* he meant by "look closer to the foul line" and what *action* he's suggesting to take. I sometimes start off throwing strikes the first game or two, then start leaving "ringing-10 pins" with ridiculous consistency. Sometimes my adjustments help, sometimes not so much.
@somedude5771
@somedude5771 2 жыл бұрын
He’s saying you need to look closer at your ball release, as in the exact moment and board placement you are releasing. Are you staying consistently in that 2-ish board window? And if so, are you still consistently leaving 10s? If so, Look closer, cause for you… it’s adjustment time. And you need to be able to know which adjustment to make. If moving a couple right/left doesn’t work, then it’s a speed change up you likely need. But in order to figure out, you need to first diagnose the issue; that is, look closer at the foul line. A lot of folks tend to look down lane, whether the arrows or even further down where they visualize the hook/roll-break point. They overlook the problem area, quite literally, under their nose-the entry board.
@jaywalsh1329
@jaywalsh1329 Жыл бұрын
@@somedude5771 No, he actually is saying to move the target point you look at closer to the foul line. Depite looking at the arrows or dots...etc. Most people ACTUALLY look farther down the lane at the breakpoint they are shooting for as they release, I do intentionally to get more length. To get the ball back into the 1-3 and avoid gong that little bit long (too much skid), bring the final spot you look toward the foul line a couple feet. you will probably slow the ball up half a MPH, trasition to roll a bit earlier, and carry better

@wingracer1614
@wingracer1614 Жыл бұрын
Ball up as in switch to a stronger, harder hooking ball. Usually when you move in it's because you're hooking too much and going through the nose or Brooklyn so you would think a weaker ball would be the move but if it finds that lake of oil in the middle, it's not going to work. You need to not only move in but also go to a stronger ball

And when you throw the ball straight to the pocket and miss alittle you will leave the 5 pin almost everytime.
@charlieodom9107
@charlieodom9107 4 жыл бұрын
The only way to leave a 5 is to get a major deflection at the pocket. I mean MAJOR! you have to either have zero rotation, zero angle, or a light ball to leave the 5 pin. Very rarely do I see bowlers with any kind of hook leaving the 5 pin. As a matter of fact, I can't remember the last 5 pin I have left, and I bowl 3-4 days a week year round! I leave plenty of (lefty) stone 8, 7 pins, 3-7-9, 4-7, etc, but if I have left a 5 pin, it was so long ago that I can't even recall when it was.

So High Tilt player's move their eyes but Low Tilt Players have to change ball?
@lazyarrow
@lazyarrow 4 жыл бұрын
I believe Mo is talking about 2 different things here. 1) To kick out corner pins, low tilt players should move their eyes closer to the line. High tilt players should use equipment that utilizes a smaller VAL angle. 2) When lanes burn up (transition), ALL style players should use a stronger rock when moving in, provided the house has lanes dressed with higher volume to the inside of the lane, as Mo stresses (but still keeping the principles outlined above in mind for kicking out corners).
@nordattack
@nordattack 4 жыл бұрын
@@lazyarrow But if I am low tilt and already using a smaller VAL angle ball and it starts to flat 10, then do I ball down and stay where I am to restore energy down-lane that my current ball is burning up?
@lazyarrow
@lazyarrow 4 жыл бұрын
@@nordattack Sorry, I misread your comment earlier. As a higher tracker myself, that is one of the adjustments I make. Another option is to move just right (for a righty), making sure speed stays firm. And yet another option, is to move just a little left (for a righty), staying soft with the fingers at the bottom of the swing. All depends on your comfort/skill level.
@nordattack
@nordattack 4 жыл бұрын
@@lazyarrow Tonight in league I was leaving a legion of flat 10 pins due to my strong ball burning up. I did not have an appropriate ball down option. So I finally just kept everything the same and rushed the line and winged up my target line. Now I was getting the 10 out. I am a Full Roller with zero tilt.
@lazyarrow
@lazyarrow 4 жыл бұрын
@@nordattack Most full rollers have it hard at times, as moving in toward the inside of the lane is not really an option, as their ball roll does not have the ability to bank left off the dry. I drill for quite a few full rollers, and most want the strongest, most aggressive balls on the market, thinking it'll give them the most hook (when often it's burning up too soon, especially as the oil dissipates after game 1). Their bag almost always consists of high end equipment (asyms). I recently convinced an older gentleman full roller, a really good shooter who still averages in the 220s, to try a "weaker" ball (Storm Hyroad-X). To his pleasant surprise, ball went slightly farther down the lane, but when it moved toward the pocket it had authority and went through the pins well. He nearly shot an 800 out of the box. Sometimes less is more. Nice adjustment, by the way.

To carry ten pins in a three-game set is equivalent to as much as 42 pins in your series maybe more if you were to miss them if you had to shoot him
@charlieodom9107
@charlieodom9107 4 жыл бұрын
It is a LOT more pins than that! Every spare turned into a strike is equivalent to 11 pins count, so 2 a game equates to 66 count. If you are on a double, and suppose you double after the supposed miss, that single pin turns into a 21 pin differential. Example: X X 9/ = 69 vs X X X = 90 This is assuming strikes after the miss frame. I always tell my dad and other league bowlers that spares at our level are far more important than strikes, since the difference between a 170 average and a 200 average is only open frames. I have never bowled a clean set and not averaged 200 minimum, but even 1 open a game and I struggle to series 600, unless I catch a string of strikes.
