I just wanted to say I own one of these, and it is expertly made. Chris at dreammods is a truly skilled professional with such a creative mind. I've been using my Dreamconn+ daily (playing Shenmue and THPS on my DC). It's definitely worth the money if you keep dreaming like I do! The latest version of the control can pair with PC (it is recognized as an xbox controller), and I've used this to play some of my steam library games. It's great especially if you're looking for that quality experience that an OEM controller has. I'm gonna get another very soon just to have one for guests who come over.

It's been awhile since I made this video and I still agree with everything you're saying here and what I said in the review. It's a really high quality product and you definitely can see why it's so expensive once you have it, but that price will most likely turn off a very large portion of would-be buyers.

My controller is not in the best condition (the joystick creaks) and there is noticeable input lag. I wanna love it. :(

I have a special place in my soul for the Dreamcast. But these days, the hoops that I have to jump through to get it hooked up and playing on my oled with retrotink and scart etc etc….not worth the price tag by a long shot. I have an 8 foot wired extension that works well. Props to the modder that created it though.

I don't know if I updated my description or not, but don't bother with this controller. It worked great when I first got it but it nosedived quick and doesn't work at all anymore. I considered taking this video down because I don't want to mislead people but I'm pretty sure I updated my description to let people know. Stick with your extension cable, that's the exact way I play my Dreamcast these days too.

It would be really cool if it had a built-in Rumble so you didn't have to worry about either owning a rumble pack or worrying about the weight onto the back of the controller that it adds... Also I have taken apart many Dreamcast controllers myself and replace the analog sticks with usually PS4 analog sticks. I would have liked to have seen something similar or even something like the Retro Brawlers Dreamcast controller using that type of analog stick but tighter because theirs is too loose. Overall it looks like a great product but I'm curious about things like how long the battery lasts and how quickly it drains when there is a rumble pack involved and a vmu let alone a modified vmu that is backlit and how much that would drain the battery

This is probably why it's called the DreamConn... Because it's a Conn Job! Having that said... I would really like a wireless Dreamcast style controller that is reliable. Maybe Retro-Bit will make that happen.

I'll keep using wired controllers at that price, looking forward to the VMU2 Kickstarter project tho!

It's pretty much as pricey as things get for a controller, period. But like I said, it's the only option you've got for a Dreamcast wireless controller and considering that these aren't mass produced and as far as I'm aware they're each made custom by hand, the price makes sense. I'm still happy with my purchase and I know I'll be getting a lot of use out of it just making game reviews, etc. Thanks for watching!

So I'm not 100% clear: Does the VMU screen display the game's normal VMU info, when playing? Does it actually save to that physical VMU?
@nastybedazzler
@nastybedazzler 2 жыл бұрын
All of the above. It does display the standard information along with a battery bar in the very top corner. And it does actually save to it as well.

Crapped out on you, ey? That's disappointing. I keep hoping something good will come along, but so far all we've gotten are those terrible retro fighter controllers or nonsense like using a PS4 controller. Ideally someone will do a PCB replacement someday. The Dreamcast has so many beautiful controller and VMU variants that it would feel like a waste to settle on some generic color.

dawg if ur controller pooped out weeks later did you contact the seller to replace it? i would be livid if $200 just went down the drain like that

True, I'm kinda used to it with this hobby though. Anybody that fucks with these older consoles like this is more than likely used to dealing with horse shit like this on a daily basis. Like with my famicom I had to buy three different models and frankenstein them all together to make it work. The Dreamcast I had to buy two different ones, since the first one I got wasn't compatible with the ODE I was using but the case was super nice, so I took out the insides of a different model and put it in the one with the better case. Like seriously you just get used to wasting money on shit like this lol. It's part of the sport.

You didn't even mention the fact that the controller has a built-in virtual VMU paired to the second slot I believe. You technically don't need a physical VMU at all if you're not using a rumble pack. And if you're using two VMUs it'll detect that and disable the virtual VMU so there's no conflicts. I got mine done when Chris was still offering colors for an upcharge, so mine is the translucent grey. I think at this point in time you need to supply your own controller for the modification, I'm assuming his supply of nib PAL controllers dried up and he doesn't want to source them any longer. And of course I also bought the smoke grey backlit VMU he offers to match the controller, the two look sick with my matching Retro Is Cool case. Almost forgot that my dreamconn doesn't use the dongle because I also got his PSU that has the bluetooth controller boards built-in. The only quirk I've come across so far is related to charging the controller after it's been dead for awhile. It'll tend to power on the console when I plug it into usb... and I can't turn the console off without pulling the power cable. Normally you have the option to power on/off the DC via the button on the console or the start button on the dreamconn, but neither of them seem to work in this situation.

In the last paragraph, are you talking about a DreamPort modified console?
@cd5sircoupe
@cd5sircoupe Жыл бұрын
@@Snowpiercer2 Yes, it's a DreamPort psu with the 4 integrated bluetooth controllers. It's by the same Chris as the DreamConn and Dream VMU or w/e it's called... Second paragraph of post you asked about: "Almost forgot that my dreamconn doesn't use the dongle because I also got his PSU that has the bluetooth controller boards built-in."

@@cd5sircoupe Thanks. My DreamConn is weird cause it doesn't seem to charge properly. The manual talks about "blinking battery icon" while charging, but mine doesn't blink. The controller turns on for few minutes when I connect the charger, but only thing blinking is the oooo Bluetooth search indicator.
@cd5sircoupe
@cd5sircoupe Жыл бұрын
@@Snowpiercer2 That sounds quite different than what I have going on. If I plug my controller into the tiny little usb adapter to charge it on a usb brick, the console itself will automatically turn on. I can't turn the system off unless I pull the plug on the power supply. So I just plugged my controller in to charge it as I'm writing this. It gives me a BT logo on the VMU with a series of orbs/dots from l/r center screen, as well as a battery meter in the top right. It doesn't update in real time, and quite honestly I don't recall that ever being truly accurate for my unit so ymmv.

@@cd5sircoupe Do you get a blinking battery icon (on the VMU) while charging? EDIT: Just saw your edit, thank you. So your screen is like mine. No blinking battery icon.

You didn't say anything at the end about lag???
@nastybedazzler
@nastybedazzler Жыл бұрын
When I first got it I didn't notice any lag at all. That was the point of showing me playing the game on the controller. It was good out of the box, but it nosedived real fast, I'd say within a month of owning it it stopped working altogether. Whatever you do, don't buy this one, and I'd take the video down so I don't encourage people to buy it, but I updated the description letting people know it sucks and I'll respond to any comments letting people know it's not worth the money

I want the VMU integrated inside the controller, though. That and an unchanged controller layout that hasn't been "modernized", it crampens my hands. Almost like reinventing the wheel, perhaps an extension cable is the best all solution.

I just spent that on a New-In-Box official clear yellow DC controller on eBay, and now I'm finding it to be about that much again to get the original yellow VMU for it... I wish I had never sold the ones I had years ago
