For me this is the definitive Drifters collection, I bought mine in America so many years ago. I was never keen on the latter Johnny Moore lead recordings. This early stuff is the REAL deal.

It was 1962, 63 and 64 and the Madrids, consisting of Philip Tarver, Johnny Williams, Joe McCaskill, Haywood Jackson and Johnetta Jackson and yours truly John Mallett was on the street corners of Greenwood MS singing There Goes My Baby, Save The Last Dance for Me, Rose In Spanish Harlem, Gypsy Women, Up on The Roof, Under The Boardwalk, and Na Na Na Na Na Na Late At Night, and of course Stand By Me. Can you guess, we modeled our style of the Drifters. Give me a shout-out guy, if you're out there!

Who were the original Drifters they came from so many different groups maybe that's why they called them The Drifters

@@wymell9724 The ORIGINAL Drifters actually recorded from 1953 to 1958, with Clyde McPhatter and a couple of others singing leads. They had a string of R&B hits which have became collectors favorites. Then in 1959 the entire group was fired and replaced with an entirely new group called The Crowns. They were then given the name "The Drifters" even though they had almost no connection to the original group. From 1959 into the 60's is when they had most of their really big hits. They also had 5 or 6 other lead singers during this time and many other background vocalists. I believe the only original Drifter who sang on the hits, is still alive, and is still performing is CHARLIE THOMAS.

Love The Drifters but what the goodness is this? At least the first 14 tracks are a snoozefest and it doesn't sound like The Drifters.
