Ross .I'm Alan Zukor. You work with my Nephew Joey Waronker. I was his his first drum teacher at nine years old. Taught him his first two years. He got so good so fast that I felt I taught him all I could . I then turned him over to my great drummer buddy Jim Carnelli who was much better at jazz then I was . I thought it was important for Joey to be more well rounded and be familiar with all styles of drumming. It was like God himself touched Joey's soul. It was literally astounding how good he got. He practiced and practiced & always nailed his lessons. I NEVER had to ask if he studied his lessons because it was obvious he had. I knew when he was 13nyears old this was goung to be his calling & his profession & livelihood. Joey made me so proud . We're going to connect this summer & I'm giving him my mint Peavey pro 1000 7 pc kit with a snare drum that will totally BLOW his mind and yours as well. I saw an interview with you & Joey on the way to a Roger Waters show in Sacramento. You asked him how he got started. He mentioned me in that interview. I almost shit my pants cause I never thought he would give me a cudo because I'm not Poccaro. But it was so cool. I'm in Reno gigging still at 74 years old.

Ross helped design Jeff Porcaro’s beautiful Gretsch kit that he used in the studio for the last couple years of his life. Dire Straits’ album On Every Street is a great example of this

Ross ! So happy to have come across your KZfaq channel ...This is Mike Pritchard ...I was the Gretsch Drum Rep in the early 80s in LA and I have fond memories of knowing you when you worked at Action Music and just starting your business.

I had heard from the Drum Doctor since the beginning of my drummer's life back in the early 90' back in France. Always remembering a picture of Ross showing a remo drumhead with a drawing made by Jeff Porcaro on the homage issue of "Batteur Magazine". I'd always wanted to know what was (and still is) to do this kind of work in L.A. Studios. It took 25 years to finally starting to hear from the DD thanks to KZfaq and nowadays technology. Thanks for doing this ! Abe's episode was epic, keep them coming please !

I have long been a fan of your work, Ross. We have never met, but I have been paying attention to your work for decades...because of the music you have been a part of...and because of how you are a part of that music. Credit to 'Drum Doctor' was printed on a whole heck of a lot of phenomenal records...for good reason!

I can't wait till the music industry or recording artists in general realize that real drums with NO CLICK, recorded on ANALOG tape is the only way a song can really come to life. Perfection is a cheap substitute for real beauty. Providing the drums that laid the foundation for the soundtrack of our lives is a pretty cool purpose to have on this planet. Cheers DD!

Ross! the king of drums!!! THANK YOU ALL for this. In the studio, details matter because you come face to face with all of the imperfections of an instrument, weird squeaks, obnoxious clicks, resonances, etc. - stuff that you'd ignore if you weren't under the microscope of a Neumann on steroids :)

What a cool job! Thank you for sharing Drum Doc! I've been doing a little collecting too the past few years. Got a looong way to go though to ever reach your collection. LOL. I definitely get excited finding a rare drum and begging my wife to let me add just one more to the hoard....I mean collection. I might have a drum problem. 😆 Picked up a black Fibes snare about a month ago. Incredible drum! Thank God for Reverb! P.S., Would love to be a fly on the wall in your shop. Peace and love to you and all from Arkansas!

❓🤔❓ I just wonder how many of these famous drummers liked the sound of the drum sets they rented from ^him so much, that they asked to BUY the set from him? Or if he refused to sell the sets, how many of these drummers followed up with a request for ^him to set them up with an identical set to the set they rented from him?

After repairing MANY drums from people who had just come from, or recently come from "The Drum Doctor", it's difficult to stay silent and let Ross get away with a finely fabricated reputation. Now, as far as tuning drums, Ross is excellent, and I give him complete respect for this, but that's where it ends. To me and others he is a con-artist, a liar, and often a drum butcher. On a weekly basis minimum, people would bring us instruments that Ross had said he had re-done the bearing edges, especially vintage instruments and their bass drums, but it was painfully obvious that he had done nothing more than lightly scuffed the bearing edges with sandpaper, telling the customer is was a sign of his hand finishing., and how the sound was miraculously improved. This was confirmed by three of his past, long term employees. Then there were bearing edges of both vintage and newer instruments that were completely destroyed, which brought up the running theme that no one really knows if he knows how to do many of the repairs or not, or if it's something like laziness and he just doesn't want to do the repair work. He's also notorious for taking a repair, breaking something, then telling the customer it broke for what ever made up reason, then having the gall to charge the customer for not only the original repair, but also fix or replace whatever he's broken. And while Hollywood certainly isn't know for it's innocence, it's no secret from his past customers and employees that his reputation was was simultaneously not just on his tuning skills, but from the "Doctor" delivering "prescriptions" in the bass drums of kits rented for gigs and studio work. If you don't want to believe any of this, don't, but it's a shame to the people who honestly try to do the best possible work to people's valued and loved instruments, and those who believe in tricking customers and not performing professionally. Sorry this is not the shiny happy response people will want to hear, but I can no longer stand to hear all of the glory stories about someone as corrupt as him.

Alright, so I’m in LA where do I take my vintage Ludwigs to check bearing edges and have them spruced up?
@gypbob123
@gypbob123 Жыл бұрын
Vintage Ludwigs can be great, or very out of round/ or vertically warped, but from normal playing it shouldn't be necessary unless you've somehow nicked an edge badly (they are usually protected by the rims) The field is getting slimmer every year, especially because most people don't have a good set up for doing the repair .The best guy around was Chris Heuer of Heuer's Drum Lab, but he moved back East. I've been out of the country for 9 years. Professional Drum Shop is where a lot of people go. @@_MRN_803
