In Episode 22 we check out living legend Brian Blade and his use of triplet fills. When Brian plays these ideas they are dynamic, musical, and exciting. While they are technically fairly simply, playing them with consistent subdivision and musical shape is a challenge. Brian Blade!!
If you enjoy these free drum lessons, please shoot me an email and tell me what other topics on drumming and jazz drumming you'd like to see covered. Also private online lessons are available from me (not Brian :-). Thanks! Chris Smith

The second fill Brian played over a 3-feeling as you played it over a 4-feeling, and in the end it was cool to see the fill in both contexts actually! Thank you!

Mr. Blade is a Leo. His spirit is that of fire and it shows in his playing yet his demeanor off stage appears to confidently cool.... I've followed his work since I realized he was from Shreveport, La. My hometown is about an hour away in Mississippi. He inspires me beyond words as a drummer.... UNTOUCHABLE is He. Magnificent Video pal!!

Thanks for this. I've been learning Jazz Crime's solo for about a year, and still struggle with these triplet fills. This will help tremendously! Cheers

Blade is one of those guys who has HIS SOUND, looks like he shouldn't be pulling off what he does but ALWAYS pulls his fills and tasty comping off.

Fantastic - I love every one of your Hangs. You've got me working on and listening to Billy Higgins a ton, and your Rub-A-Dub posts I've really incorporated into my big band drumming. I've listened to Mel for decades but your book gave my a totally new perspective on what I'm hearing. This one is one is so great - thank you Chris.

Hi Chris. Great video. Just a little observation. At 10:14 in you vid, Brian Blade is actually playing: hi-hat foot, snare, high tom, 2x floor tom, bass, floor tom, high tom, crash. What a phrase!

Bernard Purdie also does that with rack toms, so he mounts his smaller tom to the right before the floor tom. He describes why he does this on one of his videos.

Here is the thing: I don't see Brian Blade as a "lick" player at all; it all seems to effortlessly flow out of him organically because of his year's of practice but more importantly, the spirit of joy and flow and zone he is in when he plays. :)

Luis, Good catch!!! I didn't realize that I forgot to add that clip into the overall video. Oh man. It was Joshua Redman Moodswing and I mentioned how much I listened to Brian on those Joshua Redman and Kenny Garrett albums from the 90s. Love Brian's drumming, especially the 90s stuff!

Good video. Informative. Brian's spirit is the other secret to his playing. He's always got that "amen corner" ebullience in his playing. The black church influence.

Your version is more difficult for me because and correct me if necessary _ the triplet is in groups of two i. e the rr ll... I won't be hurt if you correct me and perhaps others don't agree. Great stuff as always.
@ChrisSmithJazzDrumHang
@ChrisSmithJazzDrumHang 5 жыл бұрын
Drew, thanks for the feedback. You know my version might be more difficult for you and others, it might only be comfortable for me...we'll find out! Everybody is different and things lay different for everyone. When I play my triplet phrase I feel it like a 10 stroke roll, starts on the right cymbal and ends on the left. I can get those doubles to fly pretty fast and there is no bass drum involved as a separate voice (it's just doubling a hand note) so for me it's easier for now. To be honest I transcribed and worked out the Blade stuff yesterday for the video, so as WE all work on the stuff together maybe I will become more comfortable with the Blade licks and mine will become the slowest also :-) That would serve me right :-) Let me know how it progresses for you! Thanks for the message, and it's always okay to disagree here!
