Who knew a simple trip to the hairdressers would provide us with the most gut wrenchingly emotional scene from Katherine Ryan's The Duchess. Here is the scene in full.

People not getting it... its about the girl realising she isn't a child anymore, and the mother noticing her daughter is growing up. She wanted the car, but the hairdresser was trying to imply she isn't a baby anymore. She says she wants her hair cut, and again the hairdresser implies that she is cutting off her baby hair, meaning she is growing up... She sits in the car, and notices the younger child playing with the car, and she realises she isn't enjoying the car as much as she thought, and sadly realises she is growing up. She looks at her hair (her new older self), and tries to steer the wheel of the car, as if to bring her back to her baby days... she is realising she is growing up, and can't control that... and Mum is watching, noticing her daughters revelation, and feeling sad for her daughter... she then goes outside because she then realises she is losing her baby... Anyone want to add, or change my perceptions? - I didn't cry, but my heart did get heavy.

I had this moment with my daughter 2 years ago. She had grown her hair all her life. It was down past her bottom. Long, beautiful and thick. I loved brushing it for her. I noticed little changes in her and new she was no longer a little girl. When she said she wanted to cut it, I tried to talk her out of it but knew in my heart that it was her hair and she was growing up. The day I took her to the salon, I was so emotional but tried not to show it. As soon as the hair dresser cut her ponytail off, I burst into tears. I knew this was the beginning of her changing. Now she has short hair, multicolored and loves it.

This scene was so raw, it took me by surprise. This show was a bit crude and only sorta funny sometimes but it had such profoundly meaningful scenes like this one and the wedding one and the hospital at the end where I was like 'Wow'. But because it wasn't just bedroom humour, I liked this show way more. I'll definitely watch it again.

Wiping at my eyes as I remember taking my blonde 12-year-old daughter to have all 28 inches/71 cm of her lustrous locks cut off to her shoulders. Big decision & a huge adjustment for both of us. She donated her hair to make wigs & hairpieces for cancer patients & those suffering from hair loss. I still miss it 14 years later. Sometimes, she does too so, this clip bought it all back &how we have to accept that our kids grow up & we need to respect their decisions & that they know their own minds even though they are still so young.

It’s not really about the haircut, she just got dumped and her daughter want to change to fit in. You can see the daughter reaching out to play with the car seat, she’s embarrassed cuz the hairdresser said that’s only for kids. She’s just emotional that her daughter is growing, she’d rather her daughter keeps her innocence and not leave her. I’m not speculating this, I was just watching it earlier.

Am I the only one who's just furious at that AWFUL hairdresser? I mean, seriously, mind your own business and do what you're paid for! If I seem a bit overly angry it's because I've had too many of my own similar experiences - like the time in 2010 when I was 11 and wanted a bob, and the hairdresser somehow convinced me that bobs were for babies and I should get one of those horrible early-2000s floppy fringes instead. The trauma of that haircut will forever be embedded both my memory and the photo album of my old pink Samsung flip-out phone.

Only thing about this hair cut that made me cry was that ugly ass wig they chose for that adorable little girl. Really disrespectful.

Seems like a strange thing to cry about. I get everyone saying she's not a little girl anymore and they both have trouble with that. But these things don't happen in one moment. They don't have to at all. She could just go home, play with her toys and be a kid for a while longer. It's not this inevitable thing that can't be slowed down. I feel the symbolism of the hair is too much. But maybe that's because my hair was always short, until I was an adult and let it grow out.

If it helps for context, Katherine put this in the show based on a real experience she had with her own daughter. We know rationally that our children are growing up, but sometimes there are moments that make us see how fast it goes by. I had a similar experience with my Mom expect we both ended up crying haha.

It's down hill from here kid. They will try to convince you that having sex and drinking yourself silly are better. Don't be fooled. If it was so great why do they feel they have to drink to escape feeling it deeply?Oh, and let's not forget the lifelong money chase. Always, always trying to gather enough money to maintain your life. Live long enough and you get to start worrying about shitty things happening to your health too...just for no reason other than that you didn't die in your 20s or 30s. Yep, Hang onto that car as long as you can. If the "relationships" don't work out, once the woman who accompanied you to the stylist dies...nobody else will love you with such fierce and unwavering love---and for no other reason than that that you exist as you!! The rest you must please or amuse or impress for even half the commitment. You're on your own. Adulthood...good times.

@@alittlebirdysaid Okay? How? I'm me so I wrote from my perspective. All these unique individuals with an internet connection can bring life experiences to the table that aren't all the same. If it doesn't resonate with you that's fine too, but if someone out there feels it...they now know they aren't alone. It's perfectly okay to dislike certain aspects of the human condition and be honest about your feelings.

Lol it would take me like two years to grow that much hair. How did she not cut her hair til that point?? Is this a white people thing? I got my hair cut like multiple times a year!

I didn't grow up that way, but I know other people who are that way with their kids. My mom couldn't fix hair so mine was usually short.

I can’t speak for every white person, but my mom would have my hair trimmed every few months, but I didn’t have a major hair cut till I was ten years old, and I have over 12+ inches cut off to my shoulders.

Actually this is the only really good scene in the entire show. While the daughter is lovely and beautifully played, the principal adult characters are all unlikeable, mean, self obsessed or just nasty.

I would have cried if they actually cut her hair... the obvious hideous wig ruined it for me, it was all I could focus on.

I'm not familiar with the show but from what I can tell it probably refers to a parent's last (one of, not THE last) "First" with his/her child. Maybe it reminded her of how quickly her little baby's growing!
