It really can be eye-opening how often women are portrayed in stories as objectives/goals/props. The Princess Bride continues to be one of my favorite movies, but it really was incredible when I realized Buttercup didn't matter almost at all to the story. She could've been replaced with a magic cup and it would've played out 99% the same. (She helps out that one time in the swamp, so she did do one thing. Replace her with a magic sword and she's gone.)

There's a great excerpt from a book by Shonda Rhimes (Year of Yes) about this, but with real women. "I don’t think it ever occurred to me before how much and how often women are praised for displaying traits that basically render them invisible. It’s definitely inspired by the black knight in Monty python. Compare “Tis but a scratch” to “Tis but a pinprick.” Inside Amy Schumer had a funnier sketch than this one called meth lab. You might want to check it out.
