Prior to week 15 of the 1989 NFL season, the San Diego Chargers got offended by a comment made by Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Steve DeBerg, and used that comment as motivation to get ready for this game. The only problem? The comment was about the most innocent thing imaginable, to the point where DeBerg was baffled as to how this blew up in the first place

In fairness to the 2022 Chiefs, the AFC West was predicted to be the most competitive division because of the quarterback play. Some people saw the Chargers as the best team while others had the Raiders. Nobody really thought Kansas City would miss the playoffs. They just didn’t think they would win the division. But KC is always a team to watch out for as of now, they are a dynasty that has a chance to be elite.
@sjdrifter72
@sjdrifter72 Жыл бұрын
Two titles in four years does NOT make a dynasty, it takes three or more. The NFL clearly wants Mahomes to be the next Brady and the Chiefs to be the next dynasty like the Patriots. That's why the Super Bowl was rigged in Kansas City's favor and the Eagles were robbed of a chance to win the game.

The sad thing was mostly in the 1980s, arrowhead was pretty empty like you see in the scheme. The next year, Marty got the team to the playoffs and made Arrowhead a hard place to win especially for the Broncos. Now you can't find a ticket since they are sold out wait in advance.

People did say the chiefs were gonna be bad and miss the playoffs this year. Most famously, Bart Scott said it. There’s whole compilation videos of pundits saying it on KZfaq. It’s not a situation where a good team made something up to motivate themselves. Don’t choose to gaslight instead of doing your homework. You’re supposed to be smart.

The media outlets are so far gone it’s hard to take anything an analyst says at face value. It’s sad it’s come to that but I don’t think they believe half the sh*t they say. I think what Colin is saying in the video is that fans that follow the nfl and understand the state of the 16 AFC franchises could’ve predicted KC would be a playoff team.
@garycrites1949
@garycrites1949 Жыл бұрын
@@peterbrandt9305 agreed. KC has the best ownership, front office, and coaching. Patrick is making a fortune and will still be one of the highest paid QB’s in the NFL no matter what happens with Lamar Jackson and others, yet it’s a “team friendly” deal. And they just proved that you can still win a Super Bowl even without a star WR like Tyreek that soaks up cap space and prevents other upgrades. I was nervous about the competition from Cincy & Philly, but to say they weren’t going to win the AFC West (or even finish last in the division?!) was at best a lack of faith in the Chiefs coaches and players, and just plain stupidity at worst.

I think the Chargers took DeBerg’s comments negatively because they seriously believed he was making fun of the fact that SD was already eliminated from playoff contention and that the game didn’t matter, and that’s why their coach gave them three days off to X-mas shop. Meanwhile the Chiefs still had something to play for and were a better team. SD coach Dan Henning probably used any kind of billboard material to motivate the team. Afterwards, Deberg did say he didn’t understand how the Chargers beat them because the Chiefs were a “playoff” team, confirming they didn’t really consider the Chargers a threat, and were looking past them. The next year, Deberg and the Chiefs clinched the AFC West title and would start a long stint of playkff appearances under Marty Schottenheimer. while the Chargers would finish another two dismall seasons under Henning, which would eventually lead to his firing and the arrival of Bobby Ross in 1992.

This is the kind of thing Dan Henning used to do. The following season, the Chargers had the Buccaneers at home and Henning told the team that then Bucs HC Ray Perkins had made some disrespectful comments about the team. The Chargers went out and hammered the Bucs for the alleged comments - the were actually never made.

Yes, the Trevor Lawrence thing was stupid and it mostly just ruled up the fans here who are proud of the Guinness Book of World Records 142.2 db. I always thought Deberg was cool as hell when I was a kid watching the Chiefs... but I am not going to begrudge the Chargers from latching on to something to win the game. I mean, it did work...

The thing I love most about the Chargers is that they've been in SoCal their entire existence unlike the Rams and Raiders. Started out in L.A. then moved down the freeway to San Diego and much later moved back to L.A. Of course haters like the Rams and Raiders fans poke fun at the team but unlike those teams, the Chargers have never left Southern California and hopefully never will despite many who want them to.

The Chargers showed that they probably didn't have much motivation in '89 other than what they manufactured from DeBerg's joke. No wonder they were so awful that season! Back then there were two 5-team divisions and a 4-team division in each conference. The teams that finished last in the 5-team divisions played a different schedule than everybody else the next season, including each other twice. I actually miss that.
