I actually heard about for years and even seen one myself (Ukraine). This is meant for ultra rich middle aged to old people who loves to drive gilded G63 G-wagons with seats made from bear skin. They don't use internet so they don't care about capabilities - as long as it can make and receive calls and covered with precious stones and metals - its amazing for them. We even had Vertu knockoffs sold, cause people actually wanted them.

They refer to the amount of storage on their phones as ROM. In multiple places. ROM stands for Read-Only Memory. You can't store anything in ROM. Such a basic error indicates that this company doesn't actually understand the technology they're selling. So, a perfect product for anyone with more money than sense.

my uncle used to be filthy rich and had one of these decades ago. It's still in a box somewhere but terribly outdated (obviously) feels really heavy and well built though. he had good things to say about it like them offering exclusive services along with the phone.

"free" isn't ever really free. It's probably priced into the contract renewal or is a tax write off because it's just moving old stock off the shelves. Somewhere down the line, you're definitely still paying for it one way or another. There's tons of companies that still implement such deals all the time. Or they give you iPads/tablets. Cuz they need to give incentives that are gonna be appealing AND affordable enough to still bring in profit from the contract/new sign up. Nothing is ever truly for free.

I did some research on this company years ago. Before the web3 nonsense came into play. The concierge service is really badass. They really are the exclusive service they advertise to be. Hit the button, tell them what you want, even if it's technically not for sale. Like, I want fresh Maine lobster for lunch tomorrow, and I'm in Nepal. Make sure they have access to your money, and that's it. They handle everything for you. Negotiating, purchasing, delivery, all of it. You can sit around and do nothing like the Chad you are. Obviously they can't buy just anything but you can bet they'll try! It's wasteful, stupid, but also unique and gives you a small view into a life most of us will never see.

@@juances no it's definitely authentic. Like they'll private jet that stuff. Lobster is a bad example you can get that anywhere. And it's been years so sorry I'm at all loss for examples. I remember they helped some celebrity acquire a one of a kind fossil or something that wasn't for sale. The concierge contacted the people involved and was able to broker a deal. Basically accomplishing the impossible was kinda what they do. As long as money isn't an issue :)

The last time I saw Vertu being mentioned was like five years ago, and I swear they have not updated a single thing about their product since. Same design, same technology, pretty sure all they've done is make their website more annoying. But then again, considering many of the countries they seem to be targeting are only just now getting any kind of widespread 4G cell service, I guess they don't really have to update anything internally.

The seizure of Uzan's companies and the criminal charges were mostly due to political reasons though. He was the owner of the first if not the second GSM company here in Turkey. I have watched a couple of interviews of him during the last Presidential elections, as he was trying to become one of the candidates (which was rejected). I remember they were working with a law firm which uses NFTs for the financing. Pretty sure he has some skeletons in the closet just as any other person with so much wealth, but considering the amount of unrightful company seizures and reporters that had to flee the country to avoid persecution, he seems to be on the right side of this deal than wrong.

You can find this in London UK in Harrods where I used to work. Main customers are rich middle Easterns and Chinese customers. Key selling points, hand-made/hand crafted. And it is British. I know its stupid and silly, but the customers love those 2 key selling points.

Back when everyone had a 3310, my best mate in school wanted to get a new phone because he was spoiled by his parents ad an only child. So at his birthday party at a local pub, he spent over an hour throwing it as hard as he could down the stairs. It never broke and so his parents didn't need to buy him a new one. The phone was such a tank that the level of devastation required to break it wouldn't be explainable by any normal accident unless the accident was "I fell off the empire state building." In which case, good chance the phone survives where you don't. It is truly a marvel of a device.

First time hearing about Vertu phones? They've been around for like 20 years now, and were a novel idea to produce luxury phones back when phones weren't all rectangular slabs of glass. Not much has changed with Vertu, unfortunately. Didn't end well for them since technology advanced way faster than their phones were ever worth. There was definitely a market for them at some point though!

I actually heard of Vertu before. German quasi-science TV mag "Galileo" featured them for 10 minutes like 15 years ago. They wanted to find out who buys these phones, why they are so expensive, and if they have any outstanding Features for the price. The answers were: Rich Russians and Arabs because gold and no, they were technically years behind nokia at that time and they still look the same.

The V shape on these phones reminds me of something. Stadler is a Swiss manufacturer of trains. Most of their recent trains (last 10 years or so) have a similar V design on the bottom edge of the windshield. If you search "Stadler FLIRT" or "Stadler KISS", you'll see what I mean (yes, they name their trains like that).

Considering, that some people still buy extremely expensive hand watches, which have even less functionality than those phones - this step only seems natural. It has nothing to do with functionality. Those products exist for a singular purpose - so that people who have too much money to spend normally, got something to spend them on - and look "cool" as they comprehend it.

The Google Sheets thing for their app is so funny to me. I'm not even a programmer and when I made my own tracking app using MIT App Inventor for a CS class, I later took it upon myself to use the Google Sheets API to send things input into the app UI to Google Sheets. Even if they want to use that as the data backend for some terrible reason, they could have at least hid that from the user using API functionality available to teenage newcomers who don't even know a single programming language

I recognize that gold and ruby (snake) phone from about a decade ago. It was on a list of "the 10 most expensive phones" at the time. I can't remember how much it was going for ($ upper tens of thousands) but I do remember thinking anyone who spent that much on a phone was an idiot with far too much money. You'd want to hire a bodyguard just to guard the phone. There was a more expensive phone than that one from another company on the list (it was covered in diamonds). SMH Phones like that are muggings waiting to happen. May as well shout "take this bling-covered slippery thing out of my weak grasp. It's worth more than you make in a year!"

This brand has been around for ages now. I remember reading about them and seeing the prices of these back in Java phones days. Saw one in person when I worked at a mobile devices retail, someone looking for a replacement battery... They clearly must sell enough of those to stay in business for such a long time. They're also always just behind on specs since it takes so much time to build, they can't keep up with technology. So you're paying above premium for an inferior product just because it has gold and expensive rocks on it. Not even surprised they would be the ones to come out with a "web3" phone really.

Some things about the storage: they claim "1TB ROM" which would mean the entire storage is read-only, and "10T IPFS" which, if we ignore that they cut off the abbreviation: IPFS is a file sharing service, so I don't know if they're trying to say it comes with a cloud storage service as well? If nothing else I'm impressed that Vertu managed to make something that's an even more useless hollow status symbol than an iPhone.
