God bless you, John Piper. This makes sense to me and reminds me how Jesus "healed" me from co-dependency . Jesus told me : 1/ You will always be a co-dependent. (that didn't sound like good news, especially from the Lord, the one who makes miracles !). But then, He add : 2/ You depend on me ONLY. WOW !!!! That's a double blessing. ... a crown of beauty instead of ashes ... a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair - Isaiah 61:3 Glory be to God !!!

Thank you Pastor John, I absolutely love this; To support your argument that it is our DUTY to delight in God, not just an offer or suggestion, why not this from Isaiah 30:21, "This is the way", followed by the command "Walk Ye In It". That is to say, If hearing your teaching of pursuit of pleasure in God is illumining the hearer's mind (as it does mine), what is there to question? "Walk Ye In It" saith the Lord.

People seem to get stuck with the name rather than the principle of "God is most glorified in us, when we're most satisfied in him." Very close to the Westminster Catechism. If you're unsure about this then ask yourself the question Why did God create us?

I'd like to offer a perspective on Pastor John's use of the controversial word "hedonism". Consider the hymn writers centuries ago who set God-exalting verses to the melodies of the common drinking songs of the day. Were they seeking to promote drunkenness? Absolutely not! But is it possible some weak person (even a new convert!) ever heard that melody and decided that he/she missed that old life , and stumbled back into it? It may have happened! Blame the hymn writer? John Piper borrows the word hedonism from the secular world because it works well not only to describe the pursuit of pleasures, but to differentiate from the middle of the road, half-hearted, perhaps guilt-inhibited pleasure seeker (which one could argue that even many American Christians are); a true hedonist has a "push all your chips into the center of the table", "you only live once so grab the gusto", "let the devil take tomorrow" mindset. So in applying this word to the pursuit of pleasure in God, John recommends the full-throttle pursuit of the things of God (which by the way entails full-throttle rejection of worldly pleasures, "hating even the garment polluted by the flesh" Jude 23). This word also reaffirms the pursuit of God as the pleasure source that it truly is, not the weary, law-driven soul-stealing enemy-of-joy religious grind that is so easy to revert to. Additionally, in the pursuit of God, the term commends a "hedonist-like" enthusiasm in as opposed to a sincere but mild-mannered approach that earned the Laodicean church stern words from the Lord himself. But, you argue, what about the dangers of this word choice. I say, a writer who (like pastor John) has a grasp of language and concepts should be able to expect something from his readers (those who have gotten this far with him); after he has done his best to prevent dangerous misunderstandings, to track with him and benefit from the teaching. In 2 Peter 3:15-16, Peter makes reference to Paul and his God-given wisdom, writing things that are sometimes "hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the scriptures, to their own destruction"! Peter doesn't follow this with "Be on your guard against Paul" or try to pressure Paul to dumb-down his writings. The onus is on the reader, to paraphrase Peter, "be on your guard, don't be untaught and unstable, don't twist the Word, don't fall". So, I've now dealt with any reservations I had about the use of Hedonism. Now I need to live it accordingly. I anticipate it will be a joy!

I get people don’t like the Hedonist word but considering he says in the video “It doesn’t bother me if you reject the word and embrace the principal” I don’t think it’s that big a deal

Use of the words Hedonism and Pleasure are unfortunate choices and can only lead to confusion and abuse, in the world (Both Christian and secular) as it is today. Joy in God is not synonymous with pleasure and certainly hedonism suggests the abandoning of all moral limits.

So what is Hedonism?

I love your teaching, however, I believe words are vitally important in the congruency of the Biblical message. Teaching of the depth and breadth of God’s character and our duty to God is so vital for our sanctification. I humbly offer, however, here your use of the word hedonism in teaching of our need to be delighted fully in the Lord creates a mindset of worldliness that is unnecessary. I would suggest that our duty toward finding our fullness of pleasure and the duration of our pleasure in the Lord ought not to be confused with such a worldly term. It reminds me of the “cutting edge” Christian song lyrics “the overwhelming, never ending RECKLESS love of God...” . So while I appreciate the clear heartfelt desire to stay fresh in presenting who God is, and our relationship with Him, perhaps there are more careful words that may be used to the advantage of the hearer for the lesson. Thank you again for your arduous ministry in “Desiring God”, it is a blessing indeed!
