I'd take Blu-Ray image quality over a '4k' stream in the vast majority of cases. I reencode to back up my discs to a reasonable quality and even these often look better than the streaming equivalent.

Totally agree, 4K streaming isn’t that great. A Blu-Ray on the other hand looks better, sounds better and costs less.

That Klaus Schwab quote at the end though. Sends shivers down the spine (the bad kind of shivers). Another thing about streaming movies- there have been examples where movies have been either cut, censored or removed because they have content deemed offensive to "modern audiences". The most egregious example I can think of was Back to the Future II, having the scenes cut where Biff has a copy of "Ooh La Laa" (a tame magazine showing women in their underwear)concealed within his almanac sleeve. Can you imagine the fainting couch types who stomped in and demanded changes to such a milquetoast movie? Unless you own a physical copy; they can take it away.

Editing the work of earlier generations to please modern audiences, to me, is just plain wrong, although I would make an exception for a cover that would be on display in a book store, thinking Agatha Christie here. But surely when a work has been 'updated', there should be a list of updates easily available so anyone can access the original text or images. DM

What I think that should be revived from the DVD era is the amazing amount of extra content DVDs had. Lord of the Rings, Fantasia Anthology, Alien Anthology, Terminator 2 it was extras Paradise. None of that on Blu-ray except for Alien Anthology.

I can't disagree, I've seen some fascinating stuff among extra content. One might argue that we have KZfaq now, but it isn't the same quality of experience for this purpose. DM

I'm a bit late to this I know, but the point about 4k blu-ray is that it isn't as heavily compressed as 4k streaming. I remember when loads of films were transferred to 1080p just to make them look better on streams; but the compression screwed it up. (I have a 4k blu-ray player which has upscaling for dvds and it looks fantastic). For many films in blu ray "4k" you are right - they are often upscaled. But I promise you that if you take a copy of, say, Kubrick's 2001, and compare streaming/standard blu-ray to the 4k version you will see - and equally hear - a massive difference.

Love your videos, you are preaching to the choir here. I have all the audio and video that I love on Silver discs that I can watch and listen to as many times as I want without endless charges. Don't tell your viewers, more DVDs and CDs for me

For me the main advantage of DVD, when the alternative was vhs or cdvideo, was not the video so much as the audio upgrade.

We need one on Elcaset! 😹 I could never do without my CD and LP collections, there’s versions and unique masterings that sound fantastic with no compression/limiting that will never be on Apple Music for streaming, only the latest versions.

A general charity shop might not sell second hand DVDs and Blurays, but there are specialist shops (eg. CeX) that still sell them second hand, and they're still sold new in many places. As for 4k, it's possible to tell if you sit near enough to the TV (Though it's admitedly more noticeable with text and icons than films and photos), and some HDR content looks great.

I don't see Blu-ray going away anytime soon, it's just transitioning over to 4K Blu-ray where we can enjoy even higher quality elements of audio and video like Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos along with DTS:X. Recall as well that physical media can include extra things like director commentaries, cast interviews and behind-the-scenes footage along with outtakes, bloopers, gag-reels and deleted scenes. Those are things that streaming services would never be willing to provide.

Another point in your excellent critique you missed is that even if a film is available on a streaming service, sometimes it's a very inferior copy, or not the original cut. For example , the animated film "The plague dogs" is only available for streaming ( on most platforms) in the US 83 minute cut, not the original 103 minute UK version . It is available in the original cut on blu ray though. Some niche content put out by the BFI is only available on DVD, for example " At last the 1948 show". I like the fact my Blu ray player is back compatible. ( although unlike DVD players they don't play VCD/SVCD). But they can cope with the occasional audio CD though. Excellent video btw.

@@martinhughes2549 This is true absolutely. There is another issue where content is 'bought' digitally with the inference that you 'own' it. I have seen reports, more than one and I don't know how reliable, that ebooks that have been 'bought' have been changed from their original versions to new censored versions, without the knowledge of the 'owner', perhaps until they come to re-read then. While I'm a physical media junkie, I can appreciate the appeal of digital media, especially to the younger generation. Housing is extremely expensive and job security is poor. With small living quarters and lots of moving, there's a definite appeal for digital media over physical media. The caveat is the pemanent ownership issue.

It all depends on screen size, but even on my 55" at a normal viewing distance I definitely see the difference with 4K. And indeed the 10-bit HDR colour. UHD BluRay is by far the best quality format out there (higher bitrate looks much better than 4k streams). I'd also say HDR 4k at high bitrate is better at dealing with noisy film sources, capturing more of the grain etc. without introducing too many artifacts. Your points are valid, but ultimately a high-bitrate 4k streaming service, along the lines of Spotify would be the best thing for most people. That'll obviously never happen so I guess we have to compromise somewhere.

Wee need the DVD Revival, because those streaming services deletes so much content. And also, there is some movies that never were avaliable on Netflix, Prime Video, etc., like The Man Who Saw Tomorrow starring Orson Wells and Pink Floyd The Wall directed by Alan Parker.

I was at a presentation a while ago where they covered in-car audio. I asked how many drive units there would be in a high-end car. I can't remember the exact number but it was high twenties or early thirties. Oh yes, and a resonating chamber under the floor to enhance low frequencies. DM

Thanks for the tip about Blu-ray prices, I have a player we hardly used because Blu-rays were hideously expensive in the beginning. I still use DVDs and record on my DVD recorders too, they're not quite dead in this household so little need for reviving. The problem with physical media is they occupy storage space and that's their main drawback for me, but I do worry about accessing video when you don't control their access. Money grabbing swines eh?

Limited time on films with Netflix or Prime etc so I still buy DVD or blue ray at a local thrift shop. Another reason I buy physical format si some films are out of print and are only available on DVD. Regarding Spotify, limited Neil Young or Joni Mitchell are released here in the US so CDs it is.

Lol ! Fascinating Dystopian view and sadly it seems I will own nothing and be happy about it, we'll see about that ! when you mentioned Brothers in Arms I went to look for my copy and couldn't find it I need to be more careful. Since CD's arrival I have constantly heard the professionals mention this album and have nothing but praise for it both musically and technically. I use Money for Nothing as a bit of a yard stick, it was the first thing that my headphone amp played and it was the best I've ever heard it. Great video as they all are are, I must hunt around the boot sales more than I do for those DVD and CD bargains...cheers.

I still use dvd's in fullscreen format. Compared to playing a disc, or being in a theater. You will be denied the audio quality if you stream. At best you might get stereo, or of a dolby Pro-logic nature at best. Dolby Digital, or DTS is preferred. I am listening to you in Pro-logic. Yes, I am a surround sound snob. I still have crystal clear VHS Babylon 5 season 1 tapes as well. If I had a say, the preferred industry standard aspect ratio would be 16:10 since you mention the 4K fad.

The answer is go to live events. I'll give two examples. I saw a comedy at Bath Theatre Royal. The experience was great. BBC recorded it and I saw the edited high lights on BBC and to be honest I was very under impressed. I went to a gig live music! I found the venue over packed so missed the main act preferring to listen to the support acts. Another rant. Support can often be as good if not better than the "Headliner". At the end of the evening I brought 4 vinyl records. I had the artist sign them!! Now all I need is some new styli so I can listen to them. By buying tickets and records at gig it is a sure way to know that you are supporting the artist. I don't think physical media is quite dead. It's a revolving door that goes in and out of fashion according to the demands of the market. If I ever end up on that Desert Island... then the 8 physical records are a better choice over a streaming service which may or may not work. I also get a couple of books and a luxury item in the deal!! Video on this top when I go to Lundy island some time in the future.

I've had my best finds at "antiques and collectibles" shops. They cost about double thrift store prices, but some of the shops have impressive collections. A lot more shops will have personal sized collections that probably came in a lot from an estate sale.

Amen to the humour! I agree about your use of the word movie, nothing wrong with us Brits using it. Something like Mission Impossible or Fast and Furious, i.e stuff being blown up all over the shop, 'movie' seems apt. And then 'film' can be reserved for more dialogue+plotline based stuff like The Remains of the Day or The Manchurian Candidate for example. I live in Spain and have no issue with going to the cinema and seeing a Hollywood movie dubbed into Spanish, but if it's a film that was shot in the English language, then I prefer to see it in English as intended by the film maker. But I've decided that with animations it really doesn't matter either way!) Actually that is another big plus point of DVD/Blu-ray, all the language soundtrack and subtitle options. Not sure how easy or well that is done on streaming platforms.

I agree, Blu-ray is worth bringing back. I have several Blu-ray disc's, masters of miles Davis, Pink Floyd, etc. These are truly high end recordings worth listening too.

I can play them whenever I like, no-one is tracking me, I'm unaffected by internet weather, and what I watch in ten years time will be the same edit that I watch today. DM

Not to forget the multichannel sound experience on BluRay. And BluRay / DVD are still nice media for archiving your own video recordings without relying on external services, which might shutdown or lock you out.

Yes physical media please. As far as 4k goes you can definitely see the difference between 1080 and 2160 HOWEVER it depends on A: Display size and B: Viewing distance. Most people on their living room 8 feet away won't see that on a 65" screen.

I think the days of smaller libraries are coming. Three Selling Points for Smaller Libraries: 1. Currently, a streaming catalog is so extensive, cutting it down will make finding "your" music much easier. 2. 99% of all the music you "really" want is contained in 50k albums. and 3. A smaller library is cheaper to rent monthly.

Blu Ray Audio only discs sound is amazing. Clarity & warmth 🎶 SDE periodically bring out special editions of classic albums.with Dolby Atmos & new stereo uncompressed compared to streaming remixes . The last being The Hurting Tears For Fears. The next The Lexion of Love by ABC 👍

I knew when I was buying Blu-ray that I'd love them a long time and ya know what I still do. I'd rather have the files though. Like you said I'm cool with a digital file as long as I own that digital file and they don't expire or track me!

I decided to make the leap into owning mostly digital music after purchasing my first iPod. I generally only purchase digital music material from iTunes and Bandcamp that I can download to my 1Tb iPhone & my MacBook (which is why I purchased a 1Tb phone). I’ve already noticed some things that I purchased outright on ITunes have inexplicably disappeared into the aether. 😡

Poor laserdisc. The video format everyone seems to forget that DVD replaced. You know if it wasn't for the millions poured into bringing laserdisc to market you would never have had CDs, CDVs, VCDs, SVCDs, DVDs, BDs.

P2P piracy broke the music industry. If they tried to segment like that then piracy will break the model again. If the film and TV industry have done a better job for themselves then I reckon that's mostly down to the fact that their files are bigger rather than them actually being much smarter. That's why they're behind the 4k push. Keep the files big so that people can't just lob them around the Internet instantaneously.

If your Oxfam is anything like those in Edinburgh, I'm not surprised they can't sell their DVDs and Blu Rays - their prices are extortionate! Loads of other charity shops are much cheaper, and Cash Generator and CEX are worth having a look at if you have them locally.

@@jonathaneastwood2927 I'm always quite shocked, tbh. Charity shops don't pay for their stock, don't pay staff wages and don't pay business rates, but some of them charge more than commercial companies that do all three! I also noticed that BHF put all their prices up at the start of the year.

4:13 won't get die hard theatrical mix on those small disc formats , it only exists on vhs beta off air recording as long as before early 2000's when mostly print releases wasn't shown and of course the best , Laserdisc AC-3 of the 70mm six track Dolby Stereo is so dynamic on my JBL professional cinema , lucasfilm ltd THX sound system , enough said

A lot of TV shows and old movies were only released on DVD though. Especially when they were mastered in standard definition. And you can see the difference between 1080p and 4k above a certain size, around 65" though it's not the huge difference you see between standard definition and 1080p. But scanned film provided it hasn't been DNR'd to death looks really crisp and cinematic on 4k. Everything you state about movies also applies to music, though as you said not at present. Yet. Hence physical media of all types is important for preservation. Also I don't wish to own nothing and be happy. Schwab and his fellow psychos can do one.

As someone who has and uses a huuuuge CRT widescreen tv on a regular basis, I have to say that a devent VHS looks from fine to really good (once you get your eyes used to the flickering image of a CRT again). A VHS rip on a computer looks horrible in comparison. Much of the bad rep VHS gets is down to that fact I think. Watching Casablanca on VHS is awesome. A good movie makes you forget the quality anyway. And the Audio is great on VHS, given you're not watching a pirated copy... DVD looks simply stunning on my CRT and makes me not miss HD at all. VHS Revival next? ^^

In 'Yellowjackets' there's a scene where one of the characters runs a VHS rental store. She rents the players as well. I could easily imagine this happening in real life, although I would agree there should be a CRT. Make mine a Trinitron. DM

About 4K being unnecessary: the point of resolution is *not* about being able to spot individual pixels, it is _always_ about being high enough so that no human can spot the difference if you increase it any further. Just as we did with digital audio, and you yourself pointed out the relevant resolution. 1080p is nowhere _near_ what our eyes can resolve (at a reasonable viewing angle, of course), so I expect video resolution to increase further as it becomes technologically possible to both record and reproduce. Unless, of course, we go for an adaptive approach like the most recent VR does by only rendering the focus of attention in full rez and leaving the peripheral vision at lower detail. Which is difficult to produce for something being viewed by more than one person at a time, of course.

I thought 4K was going to be a joke, then I saw it at a relative’s house, and was unexpectedly blown away the depth and dynamic range, then again it was a newer film. I asked what it was and how good the picture looked, and the host said ‘oh yeah this movie is in 4K’. I think it’s possible that Hi Res video might be more important than Hi Res audio, I can’t hear the difference between 44.1 and 192khz, only in DA converter filter changes.

The software industry has already gone in this direction with things like the Adobe Suite and Office 365. The "sales pitch" to the consumer is that you always get the latest and greatest of the products, but in most cases, patches to products were already available to consumers and these kinds of changes are really only beneficial to the software (or music) publisher by guaranteeing consistent revenue streams. It also ensures that long-abandoned legacy formats will only be usable if the company deems them to be profitable enough to release an interface to the old format. I always try to have physical copies of software media, but it has become increasingly difficult. Even with things such as tax software where you might have to revisit an older version of your taxes if you should be audited. . As someone who has a rather eclectic taste when it comes to music, I can't imagine the number of subscriptions I would have to purchase to hear the artists that I enjoy. Long ago, during the transition to digital music, there was an article in Stereo Review that bemoaned not the quality of the new medium, but rather the number of fantastic recordings that would never be released digitally because they weren't deemed profitable. The same thing may happen here. How many artists/labels won't make the switch because they might not be profitable in this format? I sincerely hate the direction of the industry and while I have many items in the various digital media formats, there's something nice about the ownership of physical media be it books, records, CDs, DVDs etc. that can never be altered (although damaged) or taken from you as digital media can. I can also give all of my physical media to my children when I pass on.

You do not see a difference between 4k and 1080p? That just means your screen is too small. I currently watch YT content on an old 1080p TV, but that's just a 1m wide TV. If it was 2m the experience would be properly immersive and 4k would be necessary to have the same perception of crispness, because the angular resolution would then be the same. Even now, whenever something is just 720p the resulting fuzzyness is clearly there and it bugs me. This is because for every resolution there is one correct viewing distance with a given screen size.

DvD has been revived by Bluray and 4k is a Niche market market as a whole and limited but 4k being worldwide region free. Many 4k is included Bluray and DVD. Many movies I have stated have not been transferred to Bluray or 4k The DVD format is not going to be on top as it was but will extend its life. Like Vinyl has made a limited revival. Being released in 1997 those children then are almost 30 So it not totally dead and buried. Like a Star Trek Red Shirt still popping up and still barely alive but carrying on this for about 20 years??? I'm watching Barrett crime show on DVD is a top transfer. We have to always consider the manufacturer process has improved the picture. The streaming has not learned by removing titles. So the demand is being created 🤔 for having more in DVD Bluray 4k. I'm rambling on about what I have already talked about in other posts. Always like to comment 🙂 I'm 56 let DVD reigh supreme until they pull the Disk from my cold dead hands. Ha. Your taste in movies is more suited to UHD Blu Ray. The sort of movies that seem to dominate that micro niche. Still, each to their own. Stunned your local charity shop won't take DVD's or Blu Ray. Agree with you re the illusion of choice on Netflix & most movie streaming offerings in the UK. The only thing I miss from streaming is director commentary & extras but then i'm a bit geeky like that. Spot on re what we'll be paying in the future just to get the variety that telly used to offer. Where's my combination air fryer / Blu Ray player / teasmade?

Publishers are threatening legal action against 2nd hand movie resellers. The dvd you buy new is just a non transferable licence to watch that movie. Reselling is a copyright violation. Not even physical media is truely yours.

I'm most definitely not a lawyer but I'm fairly sure this doesn't apply in the USA. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First-sale_doctrine and also from that the European Union seems to think the same. Elsewhere in the world things may be different. And in the future, who knows whether things may be different there too? DM

@@halflitre65 That was a metaphorical 100 years. But I wasn't even that much off, the first CRT TV was demonstrated in Japan in 1926.

Yes old fogeys like me cannot understand why renting a house,car,etc.is the way the modern world works.I have a small Sony DVD portable dvd player which I watch when TV content gets too tiresome and adverts endlessly repeated ad nauseam. Small is beautiful.

Boy do I ever agree with you. I will always prefer physical media. I want my movies at my fingertips. I don't want to depend on streaming services. I only, occasionally use free streaming, Tubi, etc. I don't subscribe to any streaming services. I don't even have cable. I use a roof antenna. Thankfully Blu-Ray is not dead. People in general don't know dick about technology. But the ones who do, definitely appreciate Blu-Ray over streaming. I have a large Blu-Ray 2D and 3D collection, both original and burned. I can even make digital copies to put on SSD's. I can put a few hundred HD (but not as good as the original BR) movies on a 1TB drive. They are ready to play instantly through my players usb. I also have a UHD player, and a dozen or so discs. I can take or leave UHD. I'm quite satisfied with regular Blu-Ray, even on my projector. Looks beautiful to me sitting 8 feet away from a 150" image. Even 720P looks great.

I haven't tried it but spec-wise it can match anything in the studio so for practical purposes it would have been perfect for the listener. But then came digital downloads and streaming which have trounced all forms of physical media. So the bigger question might be whether there ever will be a physical media revival.

My last television has a cathode ray tube. I was watching mostly cinema.was in an Italian restaurant last week and they had possters on two walls one was for The Godfather and the other was for Fellini's La Dolce Vita .I haven't seen The Godfather...possibly the only American from my generation that hasn't. But I have seen La Dolce Vita. That was made in 1960 the year I was born. Somewhat ironic..

Hopefully never, it should have went out the door when regular bluray's hit the market. I don't get it why they are still being made to this day.

there are *still* people buying DVD over blu-ray and don't realise that it's a new format, or claim that there isn't much of a difference

@@chadergeist for me its the wait time with blu ray...from putting the disc into the machine to it actually playing is forever! Dvd is faster. I dont care about the slightly better image quality.

@@jonathaneastwood2927 Your just impatient. I prefer higher or the best image quality and not 480p. It only takes about a minute to load up. If you can't wait one dam minute, i think that is funny! LOL!

I really have to disagree on "bluray is dead" for me a format is dead if there is little to no Interesst in Releaseing on that format, but there are still major Releasees comming throu. The 2 hand market is not really that telling if a format is really dead, most peope sell movies they dont watch anymore, snd they want it gone. Btw i really enjoy youre channel, found you random in the recommendation

Plasma TV s were good. We didnt have anything that gives the same feeling until OLED came Before plasma there was Sony Trinitron CRT for perfect black LCD was a nuisance

I'll take you even a step further. Information segmenting will be a subscription to some server as well. Well, not happening to this bloke here. I catalog educational vintage text books , inclusive of encylopedia and abstraction volumns. I will teach these infos for free but I will not forum the internet to do so. I'll do it by a methoded used in antiquity, in person. That's a novel idea and endeavor now isn't it. People gathering to be music and home video software affectionados. That will be complemented with teaching the children present with their parents educational textbook materials. What a wonderful world to actually interact socially with people present in a physical gathering.
