Today I am discussing why I believe we are seeing the dying days of the 1911 for both military and law enforcement service and I am sharing my thoughts about the 1911 as a aging design as a whole. I hope you enjoy this discussion and thank you for watching.

Very informative, I like how you took it all the way back to the original trial it took part in and its early adoption and its long service history. Well done video, keep up the good work.

Civilian wise, I don't think the 1911 will be going anywhere anytime soon. It is a fine and well liked handgun.

I started out with Glocks and other polymer guns but always had an interest in 1911’s. Such a beautiful piece of hardware. I’ve got a couple now and want to add the raider to my collection. Nothing compares to a well oiled piece of steel. I agree with how it’s not a good idea for service nowadays. Just too many “better” options.

My Tisas Raider has been pretty good. She can be a little ammo picky but 1911's typically are.

It's likely that mllitary service for the .45 caliber pistol is at an end. That much is likely very true. But the 1911 is still highly relevant and highly competitive in the civilian market. Today there are more manufacturers of 1911 type pistols than ever before, and there are far more 1911 type manufacturers than thare have ever been for any other kind of firearm other than the generic AR platform and that's rifles not pistols. Without even going to the small "boutique"/custom gun builders, I can walk into my local gun store and buy 1911s (or 2011s) in any of the following brands from brands they normally stock or can have in the store in literally two days. Colt. Springfield Armory. Kimber. Sig-Sauer. Staccato. Tisas. Smith & Wesson. PSA. RRA. With that many larger companies still competing strongly in the 1911 market, it's ludicrous to even think that the 1911 is dying. Plus the 2011 is very much an updated design, and in 9mm solves any remaining issues that the 1911 has which could cause it to lose out to the Beretta M9 or various polymer framed striker fired pistols such as your common as dirt Glocks and Sigs. I would not be surprised at all if MARSOC were to choose to go with 2011s in 9mm if a good option was submitted to them at a per unit cost that is competitive with Glock and Sig, etc. Not only is the 1911/2011 highly relevant still, it's still so relevant that when you mention them, the Polymer Frame Pollyannas get very, very defensive very quickly. They try to pick and choose the conditions under which their Glock APPEARS to be a better choice. But the reality is that a high capacity 2011 in 9mm is 100 percent competitive with any given 9mm Glock or Sig and for many shooters it's a better fit for the hand with better ergonomics. I myself shoot a 1911 better than other pistol types because they fit me better and mine are all in .45 ACP. Even when comparing to a .45 2011, when you restrict the comparison to equivalent ammo types, the .45 gives up nothing but a few rounds capacity. The old design of a 1911 doesn't mean it's a bad design. In fact it's fair to say that it's timeless. It has definitely withstood the test of time and the continuing popularity of it says more about its relevance than I myself can. I've seen evidence that polymer frames just won't last that long compared to any pistol with a steel or even aluminum frame. I don't expect that many Glocks will still be safe and serviceable when their plastic frames are 100 years old. But a 100 year old 1911 that has been maintained is still totally good to go. No, the 1911 is not dying. That's silly. It may not be in service with combat units, but that's actually not the largest segment of the pistol market. I don't despise Glocks. They're very functional and utilitarian. They get the job done. But 1911s fit me better and I'm a better shooter with them.

Well since the video is only focused on 1911's in Military and Law Enforcement, the fact that it is still highly relevant and highly competitive in the civilian market is irrelevant. You also bring up 2011's which is interesting as 2011's has time and time again to score any Military or Law Enforcement contracts. Meanwhile Glock 19's various Sig's, and Smith & Wesson with its M&P series keeps scoring contract. And even if you look at the civilian shooter market, the 2011 really makes a very small pie of said market.

I get what you're saying but the 1911 is more popular than ever in the civilian hands in the form of double stack 9mm 1911s, modular frame "2011s" are the current hotness. I wouldn't be surprised if a 9mm 2011 flavor pistol gets adpoted by a special forces in the near future.

I doubt it because of the price tag for 2011`s vs Glocks and Sig's. That being said, my discussion was only focused in the since of Military use and should have included Law Enforcement use really.

I think for certain Special Forces units, if they really wanted it, they could get it. They’re not that numerous to make the price tag too prohibitive. Delta even took a look at some 2011s in the past, they just didn’t adopt them due to the magazines being unreliable at the time. The 1911 will only ever truly die the day the tilting barrel, short recoil mechanism with a slide goes away, and that’s not going away anytime soon. Anything else are just features that can be backported onto the original 1911 design.

@@gameragodzilla I would think Tier 1 Spec Op unit could get 2011's if they wanted but would they want to is real question. Time will only tell. Thanks for watching, I hope you enjoyed the video.

@@MightyBjorn True, but given 2011s are becoming increasingly popular for duty use, I think it’s only a matter of time. As I said, the 1911 will only truly go away the day the tilting barrel goes away. It will eventually, as all technology eventually obsoletes, but as long as that core mechanism still remains, the 1911 can be continually updated to modern standards. I don’t know whether that indicates how forward thinking the 1911 was or how little handgun technology has actually evolved in the last century.

Not really, mean maybe for Military and Law Enforcement but for the Civilian market, it seems that 45 ACP is the number 2 pistol cartridge on the market here in the US.
