Hi - I have been a fan of Orwell and his books for some time. I am English and his writing comes from an English age of literature that is a really great source of reflection on how state control has emerged to control more and more of the individual. Read also Aldous Huxley and his amazing book Brave New World. He experimented with LSD and became very interested in modern philosophy. But the main point is about these books like 1984 and Brave New World is that they were a warning. But unfortunately the warning has not been taken seriously and have in fact provided a blue print for those currently in charge of China, Russia and North Korea. And not let's forget the attempt by Donald Trump to use fake news and claim everyone else was producing fake news against him, to stay in power and stage an attempted coup at Capital Hill. The US needs to think clearly about who they trust in government and why people like Trump got away with becoming the worst president of the US in history, and then attempt to overthrow the newly elected President with violence and lies. The year I was born. I always felt that we were the first of the experiment babies and that the concept of reality is always to be questioned.

Well it won't work there are those that are educated that can push back, the flow of information is no one near as restricted in 1984. No one has unified into a superstate nor has any country has tried to destroy the individual. I do say that todays society has become more authoritarian than the last 100 years but its not at the level of complete information control. In the year 1984, Communist dictatorships were still ruling a big part of the world and totalitarianism seemed like an imminent global threat. Today, totalitarianism is a shadow of what it was. Even big dictatorships like China have been getting a bit more free. Any dystopia will likely reflect parts of our current reality. Lies, oppression and war have always existed. But I wouldn't say they're becoming the biggest threat right now. On a side note, fake news aren't very 1984-ish. 1984 shows an all-powerful State in direct control of all the media, blatantly lying to the helpless citizen who doesn't have any other source of information. It's centralized lies that go from the top to the bottom. Fake news are something Orwell could've never dreamed of. When technology gave everyone the freedom to produce and consume information (something unthinkable in a totalitarian regime), the people became bombarded with tons of information of dubious quality, coming from different sources and presenting contradicting views. If you cannot see these, and many other societal changes taking place as the slow decent into authoritarianism then they are very successful in playing the long game. peace.

And yeah, we also can Vote for Parties, that Announce their Leaders, but i don't See the Problem with it. But you never Just get one Side, Not even in the Mainstream. For example, if SPIEGEL is to liberal or progressive for you as a newspaper, you could Change to WELT. Totally different political standings, but still both Mainstream. I also get you with the food shortages and supply-problems. It is depressing that it Happens and that many Big Businesses are filling their pockets because of that. But I don't See, that Out government is trying to keep this shortages Up to controll us more. Actually they are trying quiet hard to Fight against it (at least from my perspective). I get what you mean with the vaccines, but for me it is honestly Something everyone has to evaluate for themselve. it definitely could work. almost all information about the world in the book is given by state propaganda and events, winston's own secret thoughts(which cluld very well be wrong), and Obrien(which also might be wrong). Hell, what if 1984-world is pretty much just IRL 1984 but UK gone isolationist and full-on North Korea hermit kingdom? Come to think of it... do we even know for sure Airstrip One is british isles? No. It could never really happen, and even if it did, there's no way it would last. It's even implied at the end of the book itself that this society does eventually collapse. 1984 is a great metaphor for the dangers of complacency, lack of control over information, and totalitarianism. It serves as a warning for what we should never let our world become. But is it realistic? No. Orwell never saw the rise of technology like the internet and that's not going away anytime soon. Information will always be out there, people will value their ability to acquire information, and if things get out of hand, corrupt leaders will have their people turn against them. Even if there is an attempt to control this information, it's going to fail. It's just too big to censor or control, plus it's filled with people who will do everything in their power. Add to that continent-spanning nations and you're neglecting to learn from the fall of the Roman Empire; a nation that is too large and too unprepared is destined to collapse. This is why neglecting the past will lead to the same mistakes. People look at North Korea as being a carbon copy of 1984, but it's really not. The people there don't always accept the reality depicted by the government as inherently true, otherwise there wouldn't be so many defectors. People there live under a shadow of fear of what will happen if they disagree, not Doublethink. Some may have been seduced by the ideas the state plants in their minds, but people there have always been trying to learn about the outside world. As technology advances, that's becoming easier and easier to do. With enough time, I can see a rebellion in their future. 1984 is a partial satire/partial exploration of the dangers of a society not thinking deeply. It wasn't to be taken as a literal example of what the future will bring. People can go on and on about the politicians they hate and the policies they disagree with, but I highly doubt this sort of future will ever come to pass.
