A step-by-step tutorial for creating a successful image transfer on the gel plate using your own photo. I'll show you the easiest method for image transfers using a laser-printed image.

Gelli printing is a simple technique, an experimental process of printing that enables you to explore colour and texture in a very easy application. In this demo, I’ll show you how to create a successful image transfer using the most simplest method. Using your own photo, this technique transfers the image onto the gel plate, then a direct print onto paper.

Quick tip. You can transfer beautiful images from an ink jet printer by printing on brochure paper. It is similar to the glossy magazine pics. I press the image onto the plate rub it in and peel it back. The image is transferred beautifully. I can then roll clear acrylic medium over the image and press paper onto it pulling a black and white image. Or I can use paper that I have already colored on the gel plate and again use clear acrylic medium to make the transfer. You can also press multiple images onto the gel plate and get some really cool effects. Lastly you can roll colored paint over the image and transfer it that way. I have played with stencil overlays and I have used photos of texture and patterns to press on top of the portrait image. So many possibilities

Have you ever actually tried to reuse an image that didn’t transfer the first time over again? I have, bc i loved a magazine image so much that I refused to give up on it - the first time i used way too much paint so instead of throwing the pic out, i put it right back on but I didn’t add any extra paint & to my amazement (bc ive heard so many people say you can only do it once bc it ruins the image) I GOT A GREAT IMAGE TRANSFER!!! Now i was very curious so i did it AGAIN & AGAIN I GOT ANOTHER GREAT CLEAR PRINT!!! So now i just put the image back on the plate whenever it doesn’t transfer. In fact, i just transferred an image a few min ago & immediately after lifting it off my 12x12 plate i immediately put it on my 8x10 to which it transferred beautifully for a 2nd time. So now i have 2 of this one print to work with….making this discovery has given me so much more confidence in doing this bc now i know it’s quite literally impossible to eff this up lol

@@FroyleArt no problem! Ive tried looking it up & am shocked that no one has ever made a video about this. It doesn’t matter if you used too much or too little on the first try, either. If too much was used then just pull whatever’s on the plate, dont add any more paint, just put the image back on. Depending on how much paint was used, you can probably continue these steps to get a few images off the one magazine page. If too little then just add more paint & try again. If just enough paint, then have a 2nd plate nearby to immediately put the image onto once its pulled from the first plate, youll still get a 2nd transfer only not as strong as the first - the 2nd transfer is basically a “ghost image transfer” similar to the 2nd pull that’s weaker than the first being a “ghost print” lol Im tempted to request that you report back after trying it to let me know how it went but i am 1000% confident it’s gonna work for you so there’s no need to report back lol It’s so funny how most people, myself included, thought this was a very difficult technique that truly required skill meanwhile this whole time it has truly been fool proof AND ALL THIS TIME NO ONE KNEW haha 🤷🏼‍♀️

After watching this, I started using the color printer at the library. I noticed it was printed on a heavier weight paper. I started using paper made for color laser prints in my home black and white printer, and it really improved my results. It's quite a bit more expensive, so don't forget to change back to the cheap stuff for your office printing! Otherwise, you'll have 50 copies of a work form on very heavy paper. Maybe I should see how they transfer 😂 I also noticed that some colors of paint worked better than others, even in the same brand. I actually found black to be most difficult to use, and purple to be the easiest 🤷‍♂️

Hi Froyle, I am so happy found your channel and subscribed right away. I bought a Gelli plate and haven't dared to use it yet. There are so many videos, but yours is the best. Wonderfully explained:)) Now I will try it out. I have a question that is probably weird, but this is probably a beginner's problem:) If I print a portrait in red, so that the face is red on the Gelli plate, does the coloured laser print of the portrait have to printed in red? Excuse my strange question:) Have you ever done this in a video? I haven't watched them all yet. I would also be interested to know if you can print directly onto a streched canvas. Thank you for your wonderful educational videos. I look forward to many new inspirations. It's fascinating that you can learn at such a distance. Wish you all the best, Gabi:)) From Germany

I have always found that colour laser prints work every time! I get prints done from my local office shop, to have the transfer in red, your paint will need to be red. I have a few KZfaq videos on image transfers and a few in-depth classes on Skillshare. Have a look at this one, it is the simplest - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rpldnqyEtL-pl5c.html

Hi there, thanks for this, I was counting the seconds of your first 'rub' until you lift the first print... Most videos don't do this real time so you don't actually know if they rubbed 20, 30 or even a minute of time. So I was counting and at the last moment the video image switched to your pull, so I still don't know how long the first rub lasted. Can you give me an idea please?

I'm a newbie to gelli printing and like Gabi Schmidt below, I too have just purchased my very first gel plate but have not used it yet (by GelPress, 8x10 inch). I just sit and stare at it coz I read a comment somewhere that someone ruined their new plate straight off buy not prepping or conditioning it or something. They are quite expensive in UK so that's the last thing I want to do! Is there anything I should do to the new gel surface before I delve right in (she said timidly 😟)? Your advice would be sooo appreciated! x

Try an inkjet with glossy brochure paper. Press the image onto a clean gel plate. Roll paint over it or clear acrylic medium. Then press the paper into the gel plate and rub. Peel back and you have a transfer of any photo you choose. I print mine in black and white. I came up with the technique during lockdown for a print making class

Yes you can use inkjet. The paper is what matters. I use glossy brochure paper printed with a canon pixma inkjet printer. It mimics glossy magazine paper. You press the image directly to the clean plate and rub it on. Then peel the paper back and a beautiful image is left. You can then transfer it from the plate using paint or clear acrylic medium. You can also press multiple images onto the plate at one time creating a cool collage effect.
