you can use mud blocks to plant the sugarcane, then hopper directly below it. mud block is slightly lower than dirt and sand

the farm is actually 3 wide since you cant place a second slice right behind the first slice

a redstone torch, that burnt out needs a blockupdate to lit again, which its get from the sugarcane growing. the torch burns out if its turns on and off for a long time
