Cleaning animal fleece ready for processing has to be the most difficult and time-consuming part of fibre work. In fact, for many people, their first encounter with raw fleece, whether from sheep, llama, alpaca or goat, will be their last. Each type of fleece has its own peculiarities and cleaning requirements.
Today, we want to share with you a short video of what we believe is the easiest way of getting rid of the dust, dirt and debris from a raw llama or alpaca fleece. It also works well with raw sheep wool as well as mohair. However, it can break up the locks, so if you want the locks intact, don't tumble!

This is a brilliant "thinking outside the box" idea. So often it is so easy to do things the way they have always been done, but you have stepped away from the tradition and come up with a great idea. Good on you!

Hello again.We just finished painting our little house, and we were watching the paint dry with great anticipation to see if the color was right, and laughing at our excitement over it. But, I got two pygora bucks last November that were not yet a year old, never shorn. I waited til May to hire an expert to shear the fleece. One has a soft, curly, fluffy fleece. The other has a curlier, sticky fleece that gets dusty easily and is very shiny. I hope you don't mind my telling you this because I have a fascination with this subject of processing and using natural fibers, and basically I know nothing, not even the terms. The fleeces are growing very nicely again and I run my fingers through them as much as the idiots allow me. They are criminally insane and have horns. The fleeces I got in May are mostly filthy, and a lot was matted when I got them. The shearer told me they were matted. I was not afraid to handle the fleeces and recently I began to pick through them for long softer locks, which are 7 to 10" long. I cut out shorter sticky curls. I found some fluffy stuff. I play at things like a child in order to acquaint myself with a new thing . So, thank you for your instructional videos. I appreciate the help. When I first saw the dirty fleece, I envisioned making my first baby sweater all filthy and stinky and full of hay and balls of you-know-what hanging off it.

Wonderful idea, there's an awful fleece awaiting some serious cleaning on my porch, and this is just what the doctor ordered for it!

The 'Build Your Own' plans are selling well, so I expect there will be quite a few concrete mixers receiving a makeover this winter. All sales help to look after the rescued llamas and alpacas in Llamas in the Raw Sanctuary www.fabinbc.com

It IS a modified cement mixer! Furthermore, it is modified in such a way that the machine will still mix cement on the rare occasions it's required to do so. ....and the plans for this DIY conversion will be available from our website quite soon.

The plans for the fiber tumbler will be available very soon. It seems many people are interested in building a tumbler for a fraction of the cost of the commercially built machines. I will let you know as soon as they are complete and on our website.

A small hand turned model should work, but you need a lot more concentrated air pressure than a hairdryer can provide. You could try a small electric compressor with an air nozzle. Camping, boating or auto suppliers sell miniature compressors for inflating boats and tires. That might work.

Roughly how long did you tumble and blow the fleece for? I've got pet sheep and while their wool is mostly pretty clean and free of too much VM, this year they have been having hay fights and rolling around in dirt, so when the fleece comes off in Oct (I'm in Aus), it's going to be a mess. Fantastic video, thank you for sharing!

The mess on the ground came from about a dozen fleeces, but you don't see the stuff that is blown away on the breeze.

do you think a hand turned model would work with a hair dryer for smaller amounts?
@lisemcleod1816
@lisemcleod1816 6 жыл бұрын
I place a large handful of alpaca into a metal egg basket and blow the vm and dust with a small air compressor. It does a fantastic job in no time. I wear a face mask for protection from the cloud of dust. A hair dryer with a metal, plastic or wire container would certainly work.

it might work better with larger screen
@LlamaSanctuary
@LlamaSanctuary 9 жыл бұрын
You are correct. I was intending to use 3/4 inch screen, but it was unavailable locally, so I used the largest available, which was 5/8 inch. In the downloadable plans available from our website www.fabinbc.com the larger screen is recommended, but the slightly smaller screen does a great job of getting the second cuts out and keeping the longer fibres in. If you are dealing mostly in short fibres, then use the 5/8 inch screen.

hunterkono824 If you subscribe to our website www.fabinbc.com (we don't bombard readers with lots of emails !!) we will make the announcement there, but I am certain it won't be this year, since all energies are directed into moving The Llama Sanctuary to new premises. There'll be lots of whoopin' and hollerin' when we do reach that point, for sure:-)

Depends how big the bugs are where you live!! We don't get many bugs in the first place, but if the bugs don't go through the 5/8" mesh of the drum, then I don't want to play with those bugs!
