Love the concept of decluttering one thing at a time. Taking everything out of a closet at one time (taking up a bunch of room on a bed or floor) can be overwhelming mentally and physically exhausting for me with severe osteoarthritis and being 75. I really like your method; thanks for this video. And I also want to thank the woman who allowed you to use her clothing and hangers so that the rest of could benefit from these decluttering lessons with her visual aids that help us remember these tips. If she can make these decisions to declutter like this in the midst of her own trials and illness, it encourages me to do the same. Kudos to your client for her strength in doing this.

It's true, overwhelm is one of the main reasons clutter piles up. And picking one item like fur coats, releases all the mental energy from feeling like one has to declutter everything at once. Also decluttering everything at once is more of a purge, with no rules attached. Therefore, all that same type of stuff finds it's way back into the closets because nobody is clear about the stuff that is in there. Thanks for sharing this and for joining the conversation.

Have you considered taking out a section at a time? I Decluttered more when I put a section of my clothes on the bed. Like just pants. I think twice about putting the item back into the closet.
@newbeequilter

@@judysbakeryandtestkitchen1654 - "One thing at a time" can mean a "section at a time" for me as well as one item. Without watching the whole video again, I remembered it as being the owner's workout clothes regarding her former hobby - so it could mean a few things within a section or a whole section I guess. What I cannot handle is taking out a whole closet full of clothes or say a whole bookcase of books etc. as it's just too cumbersome for me. The Marie Kondo method just doesn't work for many of us.

@@newbeequilter that’s fine. Do what feels comfortable for you. I’ve been decluttering for many years and have never done the Marie Kondo. That would be overwhelming. Today, I said a 15 minute timer and went through my baking pans and cutting boards. I ended up taking two placemats that we don’t use (from a set of four) and a small cutting board. Even getting rid of that made it much easier to get things in and out. I saw my husband struggling yesterday and knew it was time to go through them. I also organize them, so I need to label them

@@newbeequilter oh yes, i used to have SO MANY clothes. It used to take me all day to swap out my summer/winter wardrobes. It was overwhelming. I still have maybe too many, but I'm only keeping what fits me now in my wardrobe. But books! Trying to Konmari those would be disaster. I have 4 huge bookcases, full.

I'm sorry, that stinks. I watch The Minimal Mom and she gives all sorts of decluttering advice too, and one is that you can start with 15 minutes. And I do that when I'm decluttering my room and bathroom, not necessarily throwing stuff away but putting it back where it belongs. It's amazing what you can do on that period of time, and sometimes I just do stuff during tv commercials for an hour or so. Last night I tried on some clothes and decided to sell them as they're barely worn and from Chico's, which is a bit pricey. So now I have more room in the closet I put my off-season clothes in. 15 minutes!

Thanks, Ash. One item at a time. Pick something that has no value to you (beach towels, or headbands, or belts.) Once you get the process started, the next item becomes like a treasure hunt. It's easier to do. And it's okay to keep things as long as you make clear reasons about why you're keeping them - and determining how many of them you need.

I’ve been working on decluttering clothes for several days. I work for about 20-30 minutes in the morning while I’m at my best point in the day. I’ve found it helpful simply to do a section of a closet or one drawer at a time vs getting overwhelmed with a whole closet. For example, one day I focused just on blue jeans. A suggestion you made in another video has helped me so much, Angela! “If you don’t, you wont!” You were actually referring to hobbies & other household stuff, like golf clubs, but it has help true for me for clothes too. I tell myself that I don’t wear it, so I probably won’t. I have a ton of clothes I don’t wear since I’m retired. Thanks for your help!

I read the Marie Kondo book when it first came out and I was editing my things after a life change. Once I'd gotten my clothes down to what I actually wore, it was very freeing to make those rules for myself. The one I use most frequently was to give myself permission to get rid of any piece of clothing that no longer fit, had developed an uncomfortable texture, or was overly damaged. Literally, I'll put on a top and feel icky and it goes straight to the trash /donate pile. Having a simple set of rules for determining what needs to be added or deleted was maybe the best and most important step for keeping a tidy and comfortable home. A related tip is to keep a spot or paper bag for donations at all times and donate it as soon as it's full. If I'm on a massive task, like unboxing after my move, I will keep the pile around longer as there are inevitably items that show their usefulness within a week or two, but that pile is GONE after 2 weeks.

I'm so glad I've just discovered you. The first video was one you did in 2018 about cleaning when you're depressed. I didn't go for a walk, but I did go and tidy the kitchen! Even de-dog-haired a chair in the kitchen! So after that I went to your channel to see if you were still on youtube and here you are giving advice about how to de-clutter your clothes. A job that is desperately needing doing (for my own peace of mind). Not only that, but I also have cancer, and have had a few 'accidents' too (broke my neck and leg and cracked my skull, but luckily with no long term side-effects other than developing osteoporosis). I have a mother who is a hoarder - but with Virgoan OCD, so it's the tidiest hoarding I've ever seen, but I see those tendencies in myself - hoarding without the OCD!! Due to all the above, I feel a strong 'need' to de-clutter and simplify! So after that really long-winded explanation, I really just want to say Thank You. x

It’s really hard to get rid of things that you used to love before you got injured or illness. There’s always a hope you could get back to doing it. At least for me. I keep hoping that I can do a little bit of cake decorating. Not too much, but just a little. This weekend, I finally decided to declutter a cast-iron grill. I haven’t used it in years. I was trying to find a use for it, instead of having something that needed the pan. The reverse. I put it on our local Facebook 24 hour auction page with a five dollar minimum bid yesterday . It sells for $20 on Amazon. I told my husband I would be happy with $10. I’m glad to say that it sold for $11! The winner is so happy, she is picking it up tonight and paying me by Venmo. So it’s going to a home that really can appreciate it I’m happy to have the money to get a new challah roll baking pan that I WILL use for gluten free recipes. And that heavy cast iron pan won’t be weighing down my kitchen cabinet drawer!

Good idea for the declutter corner with the table. Gonna try this. I donated many bags of clothes a few years ago. Then went through my clothing that are in my drawers and it was hard, I've been on a diet for 2 months in process of losing weight, still 10 lbs to go but I found lots of clothing that does not fit now. So I will put those in bins and out of the way, as a quarantine bin, if in 3 months I have not acheived my goal, I will just donate everything from those 2 bins and not even go through it. I'm fed up, it's time to be realistic. Then I have my garage to declutter, it's a big mess with too much stuff. And both my sons rooms that I need to repaint so that will force me to declutter with them. It's tough in the kids rooms as it's a mish mash of toys, arts, books, boxes just so many random thjngs and I don't know where to start and that is why I keep procrastinating. Will set up a table with them with donate boxes, trash bags and things to keep. It's very emotional for me to get rid of their things, as they are growing up so fast and it makes me sad to give away the toys ect. I also feel overwelmed as with the kids, my dogs, a husband the house gets messy very fast, so I do the basics daily, tidy up, vaccum, mop, meals, dishes, laundry that is never ending, so after all that I have no energy to do more and the clutter still remains which makes me so anxious and depressed. And it's silly because I know what I need to do, I just feel frozen because I am overwelmed. I watch alot of videos to motivate me, even before cleaning, or else I have no motivation at all to do it. So that helps. Thank you for your videos.

Go, Sandra, congratulations on the weight loss. That takes a lot of determination, willpower, and dedication. I'm so happy for you and so proud of you. And the cool part is you're removing the clothing as it no longer fits. That is an epic strategy and a great motivator to keep the weight off. High five my friend. 👏👏👏

I had an accident last year, not anywhere near this clients severity, but because I am 70, the inability to walk or hike for hours at a time that was my norm, was understandably curtailed. So, I gained two sizes and had to find other ways to exercise. But that means I have an entire closet of clothing I love that I don't/ won't wear unless within THIS year I drop a size or two... Anyway, I got rid of my athletic wear using this method. Now, I'll have room for ones that will serve my new body and capabilities. Thanks, I will watch more of your videos. And any suggestions as to your videos would be appreciated, I've never had to deal with a circumstance like this before.

To me this closet was easy to do. Skimpy tops, athletic wear. For a typical closet you have a variety of clothes: dresses, shirts, blouses, pants, skirts etc. That would be a helpful video if you could do it.

Hi Carol Joy, I have a playlist kzfaq.info/sun/PLh1fKdNH3piQsgq-2BvSpWLZFYhGguFoK for you that will show you the various things you mention. We don't declutter a typical closet all at once because for many that can be overwhelming. And, gutting a closet is not sustainable without making new rules about the items removed because without rules, the same or similar items find their way back to the closet only to be decluttered again.

I’m sorry about this woman’s accident. I’m going to send love to her. 💕 I know this feeling because I am a retired high school teacher, but had to retire because I had become so ill from toxins in breast implants and moving to a condo that had hidden mold, that I had a stroke, several autoimmune diseases, infections, chronic pain, and the worst was severe brain fog. I lost everything I loved. (I’m including this so other women who might have the same issues will think about what is in and around them.) I had to move out of my dream condo, and I decluttered almost all my teaching clothing, except pieces I might wear outside the classroom. I’m in my newish house, but I’m still recovering and in chronic pain. However, I lost 2 of 3 bedrooms and closets in this 1950’s home to my sick son and my granddaughter. I still need to declutter more! Where can I give away size 2 or 4 petite sized clothing that hasn’t been worn or maybe once? I have prom dresses and a wedding gown I wore at my daughter’s wedding, but they are so small, no one can wear them. Is there a charity that takes these kinds of items? I also have a crib and all the things a baby would need. Any suggestions? Thank you!
@AskAngelaBrown
@AskAngelaBrown Жыл бұрын
Kathryn, I am so sorry for all you have gone through. I appreciate you reaching out to find tips on where you can donate clothing and baby items. I would reach out to a local woman’s shelter to see if they can use the baby items and clothing. As for the prom/dressy items, there are charities that match prom dresses with teens that can’t afford retail. Perhaps a school could let you know the charity in your area that does this. Sending you hugs! 🤗

This was a sad episode. I really feel for this lady and all the life changes she's been forced to go through. And of course given that you're doing this with her, I presume that it's something she wanted for herself and is helping her close the previous chapter of her life and begin a new one -- which is great! I think though, that for a lot of people, if they aren't moving, downsizing, or needing the space for other stuff, there wouldn't really be that much harm in keeping these items from their old life that they'll no longer use. I guess it all comes down to the person and their needs and wants. Hypothetically if it were me, I could see a lot of these items becoming more "keepsakes" from my younger, healthier, more active life than necessarily clothes I expected to wear often -- and I think that's okay if there's the space for them to be stored neatly. Like, no, I'm not going to use those biking shorts again, but I'm going to keep them anyway to reflect that period of my life and those memories, and if my family wants to get rid of them after I die, that's fine.
@AskAngelaBrown
@AskAngelaBrown 2 жыл бұрын
Great points. She had pictures of herself racing wearing some of the clothes she donated -- so, the pictures honor the memories. (And she still has her racing bike hanging front and center in her garage - which I think she's keeping for a relative or as a keepsake.) It's sad, to let go of old clothes, it's true, but so encouraging to see so many people moving on from the past looking towards the future. Imagine having a closet with clothes you love and can wear now - rather than every time you walk in your closet you are filled with sadness from a bygone era.

You are correct there is pain in letting go of anything that once meant something (or still means something to a person.) I'm working with a woman now who has her wedding dress crammed in her closet and she has no daughters or granddaughters to pass it on to...but she has been married 55 years and for 55 years the dress has been hanging in the closet. She is 100% convinced that leaving the dress in the closet is the reason the marriage has lasted so long - so we kept it in the closet. Heck, if a marriage can be saved by hanging a wedding dress in the bride's closet - then by all means, keep the dress. The goal is to move things on that no longer have a purpose for you (or the person you are working with.) Thanks for your kind wishes and compassion. I appreciate you. 🙏

@AskAngelaBrown Жыл бұрын
Thanks. We often remove hangers from a person's closet once we've cleaned out the clothes so there it not an unconscious want to fill the hangers back up. Hangers like this are usually put in an unused closet in the home (these were expensive the client said) so if they want to use them again, they certainly can. We often end up giving them away at some point because they do in fact go unused in many cases.

@AskAngelaBrown
@AskAngelaBrown 2 жыл бұрын
It's true, the velvet hangers are not accepted at most places, that said, you can take those and put them in a box at the end of your drive. Take a picture of them with a picture of the house in the background so they are easily identifiable (which house in the neighborhood). Post the picture on Nextdoor.com with a "first come first serve" post. We've given gobs of stuff away in the neighborhoods we've cleaned in and the longest "sit" in the driveway time for items to be claimed is 26 minutes. 👍👍👍

@George Edward I thought I was the only one who thought this way…. My sentiment for clothes is exactly the same. I’ve not bought clothes in over 15 years and they are now starting to shred, disintegrate as you say, due to excessive use and passage of time. Every year I say I will push one more season with my summer or winter clothes due to the change of seasons here in the Northeast. But it is easy to see I’ve pushed my luck a bit too far and will need to start purchasing more clothing at latest early next year.

You can easily make these decisions every time you do laundry. When you put your clothes away, always add them from the right. Over time, whatever’s on the left hasn’t been worn and can be considered for purging. This applies to the pants section of your closet, your sock drawer, everything. I have two drawers for casual T-shirts. I move everything down before putting away the clean T-shirts. I have two rows for underpants in one drawer. I put the more specialty use stuff in the back row, everyday underwear in front. Still load the drawer from the right. Same for wire vs sports bras. Same for color vs white socks. It’s hard to get rid of some items, especially when you paid a lot for them. This forces you to stop kidding yourself. Plus, it doesn’t need to be a big project you’re never gonna get to.

I don't know if you would have any advice for me. My entire closet is of a lifestyle I don't live anymore: business clothes, dress pants, beautiful jackets, dresses, fancy wear, pieces that I love and cost a fortune, but don't fit - actually, my entire closet. I see the open and full closet everyday because it's in my bedroom, and my attachment is that "this is me, or at least who I was, and are all my memories". The only things I wear now are in a couple piles on top of my bureau: loose pants and lots of loose tops. I literally don't know what to do. How do I give away such a big inherent piece of me? As I said, I don't know if you've had experience with this before and can offer any advice. On this specific video, with respect, it really didn't mean anything to mature/senior women. It was just about a former athlete getting rid of her athletic clothes. Thank you for your time.

I have a small made up wardrobe completely full, I have bags, suitcases and chests full of clothes, some from 30 years ago, I hate the mess because all of the bags and cases are all piled up in another room, so basically two spare bedrooms wasted, but I cannot part with any of my clothes, it’s strange because I hardly ever have anything nice to wear. Most of the clothes are a few sizes too small but I convince myself one day I will be lovely and slim again so if I throw them I would have to spend a fortune on new clothes, my other reason is that a lot of the clothes were quite expensive and I think, oh I’ll sell some make some money, I’ve done it once with one dress, only got ten pounds for it and felt upset that I had let it go, then there are clothes that remind me of lovely times, same with shoes, I have lots of shoes some not even worn but now riddled with arthritis I cannot wear the heals anymore, getting rid of them is like finalising my inability to wear lovely shoes anymore. I know I need to be realistic, I would love a simple wardrobe with clothes that fit for all seasons but don’t know if I will ever get there. I’m not much better with items either, I have box fulls of books, old ornaments, pictures just not needed anymore but cannot separate myself from them, I think in another ten years if I don’t do something about it I will need a four bedroom house so I can fill a third with my things. It’s just too stressful and makes me feel quite miserable about it.

I understand how overwhelming and emotionally challenging it can be to confront the clutter and attachments we have to our belongings. It seems like your wardrobe and storage spaces are filled with items that hold sentimental value, memories, or hopes for the future. It's completely normal to have difficulty parting with clothes that no longer fit or shoes that you can no longer wear due to health issues. Letting go can feel like closing a chapter on certain aspects of our lives, and that can be tough. It's important to approach this process with self-compassion and take it at your own pace. Consider starting small, maybe with a single category or area, and gradually work your way through. You may find it helpful to set aside some time to reflect on the true significance and usefulness of each item. Remember, it's not about getting rid of everything, but rather creating a space that brings you peace and allows you to focus on the things that truly matter. If the task becomes overwhelming, reaching out to a professional organizer or a compassionate friend or family member for support and guidance can make the process less daunting. Be patient with yourself, as letting go is a journey that takes time.

Laura, you are in the right place! I have lots of videos on decluttering. A great rule to go by is get rid of the easy stuff first. Here is a video to checkout: m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lapje6memJ6rfZc.html Keep me posted on how you are doing. I’m routing for you!

This video just filled my heart with so much sadness...someone lived their life, fought cancer, recover from accident, still trying to make the best of their current life- but the closet assessment approach is so cut and dry, like going through a deceased person's estate...
@AskAngelaBrown
@AskAngelaBrown 2 жыл бұрын
Irina, I agree with the sadness, and still the woman wanted to go through her belongings so she wouldn't be a burden to her children later on. Creating space was something that brought her joy and is a great lesson in letting go of parts of your past that no longer represent the activities you are doing. For her, every time she went in her closet it was making her sad because there were images of her past that gave her angst because she would no longer do those activities. It took careful consideration I'm sure, for her to call me.

I hate the cycle clothes so much but when you tell me that she’s never going to ride again and that she loved to cycle my hoarding instinct is feeling a lot of nostalgia for those bike shorts. I have a problem

I totally get that-our favorite clothes often bring back many memories. If it’s tough to let go, try keeping just one special item that could help you hold onto these nostalgic feelings without being overwhelmed

I often would struggle with the fact that I paid money for the clothing item. (Ugh) and so my next question is “DO I FEEL FABULOUS IN IT? “ or DO I LOOK FABULOUS IN IT? I tended to keep a lot of “MEH” clothes feeling guilt about the expense.. but now I use the fit or look as the deciding factor. If I am still stuck, I take it to my family and tell them to be brutally honest since I have some extra weight and not everything looks fab-o on this body!!!! 🤣🤣Then I can TOSS with glee!! Weeeee! Make room for something better to come along in the future..

if this video causes me to feel nauseated, does that mean I am a hoarder? maybe being raised so poor it is so difficult to get rid of things.
@AskAngelaBrown
@AskAngelaBrown 2 жыл бұрын
Feeling nauseated if it is clearly only related to this video, could mean that it's triggering something. Not necessarily hoarding tendencies but it could be connected to a scarcity mindset. Do you keep things you don't use, don't want or need just because you once paid good money for them?

LOL. It's true, when we declutter, we usually get rid of multiples at a time, but walking through one item at a time, gets people who are stuck thinking about WHY they are hanging on to their items. Logically, it's often easier to let go of an item once you realize the reason you were hanging on to it no longer exists.

Decluttering a closet does bring forth all sorts of questions and the good news is that they do ot all need to be answered at once. Your unconscious mind will go to work trying to find solutions while you focus on making new rules with one type of item at a time. What one item will you focus on? It doesn't have to be from a closet, it can be from a cupboard or a toybox or a craft box.

It's possible. We got rid of the clothes, and I asked her about a week ago if she missed any of them - and she said: "not a one." LOL. So if you can downsize the clothes in your closets with no regrets...I am going to call that a win. 👏👏👏

No. Just take them out of your closet and donate them. The place they are going will have their own washing methods and will do that even if they are clean when you donate them. Great question though.

I have a friend whose weight fluctuates....sometimes she loses 30 to 5 pounds and then she gains it right back. So she keeps all these clothes packed into her closet that she cannot wear “yet”. What do I do to help her?
@AskAngelaBrown
@AskAngelaBrown Жыл бұрын
The first question is does she want help? If yes, she may want to pick a new weight range (i.e. ten pounds in either direction of her perfect weight example sizes 6 to 8.) Then she can let go of any of the clothes in the minus or plus size of that range. Example < 3-4 and >10-12 Does that make sense?

Thanks for sharing your perspective! It's great to hear different approaches to decluttering. While some may find success with emptying the entire closet at once, others might prefer a more gradual process. Ultimately, it's about finding what works best for you and your unique situation. Appreciate your input!
