The Southwest Airlines Companion Pass is one of the great benefits in all travel, and if used correctly one of the best credit card benefits that exist today. This video is going to explain exactly how to get the Companion Pass the easiest and least expensive way possible.
By optimizing the Southwest Credit Card system, you can get the companion pass without spending any additional money that you normally would not have spent and do it in around one month. Southwest offers both personal and business cards that you can apply for that earn qualifying points towards the companion pass. The personal cards have great sign-up bonuses, and most people don't realize that you don't have to be a business owner to get accepted for a business credit card.
Watch the video carefully, as it's packed with tips that I wish I knew before going for the companion pass myself. If you don't follow the steps in this video, you may get the companion pass at the wrong time of the year, or miss out on the chance to add another Chase card to your wallet.

Companion pass is easy to get the first time with these tips, but very challenging to keep unless you spend considerable amounts flying/buying. For me personally, the preboarding insanity on @SouthwestAir these days is causing me to give thought to whether I even care about companion pass any longer. I live at a LUV hub with other alternative non-stop flights to where I travel most. If that changes I will gladly give up my A-List Preferred and Companion Pass to switch airlines.

great vid! how do you keep the companion pass going after the first two years without opening more cards or spending a large amount of money?

That's the tricky one. You really have to use the Southwest Airlines Cards enough to earn those 135,000 points in the year to keep that companion pass status going. For most people/families that's hard to do unless you put all of your spend on just the Southwest Card. Had this on my radar for a while now thinking of pulling the trigger. Looks like about 6K spend total to cover both cards. Looking to get a new Macbook Pro and book a Japan vacation for next spring. Thats should almost get me there on the spend. The only thing about Southwest is that there seems to be few direct flights. When you include layovers, you lose a lot of time and a whole day due to just travel. Do they ask you to submit anything for the business card?

Don’t think it’s difficult to get approved for the Southwest business card. But I recommend applying for that one first because that could be the harder hurdle to get over out of the two. It sounds like you have a perfect opportunity for purchases that you would normally make to put that on your new Southwest cards to hit the spend requirement. I have not noticed a problem with direct flights for southwest, but that could be just the routes that I’m flying

Will closing the account- let’s say the business account (since it cost more monthly) affect any points already earned? Or do I need to keep both accounts active in order to keep the companion pass?

Once you have the points, they're yours to spend. You earn the points on the card, but they are applied to your "Rapid Rewards" account which is an account not native to your credit card, but that lives on your Southwest flyer profile (if that makes sense).

Hi, thanks for the helpful tips. I have a question - There is a policy that states that Companion pass points reset annually on Jan 1st. Does this mean that whatever points you have accrued all year get lost at the end of the year and you start from scratch?

Good question. This is what most people get confused on about SWA and the companion pass. The points that you've accrued throughout the year toward your companion pass progress get reset. However, you do get to keep those points towards redeeming rewards like flights, gift cards, etc. Does that make sense?

The earlier in the year you hit your sign up bonus the better. You want to have the entire calendar year (January 1-December 31) to maximize the time you get with the companion pass.

I've considered this, and if you fly a few times a year it's going to be worth it. You'll be under $300 in annual fees with both Southwest Card pairings. If you even fly one friend on a round trip for free, that's pretty much covering your annual fee value. We're not even talking about what you can spend 135,000 rapid rewards points on and the monetary value that comes with those for having the cards.

All the research I've done indicates that the SW Business card is EXCLUDED from the 5/24 rule.

Do venmo purchases count? Some say they do, and some say that it is considered cash transfer and doesn't count towards purchases.

But have you looked at how many trips you can make with the 130,000 with 40,000 points equaling $600 which is getting your companion to fly to three times with each 40,000 points so round trip per person roughly average $260 for every $20,000 points that person companion Can Fly for Free using 20,000 points round trip flights that can be used whenever we want not within one year of the Companion Pass

I just signed up for the basic card in late January. I want to get the 80,000 signup points for business signup points. Can I pay my property tax bills, and HOA monthly expenses on my business card, using my business card?

Yes, you can do all of those using your business card. I've never seen anything that says your business card must only be used for business expenses.

hmmm... I tried to use one of my airline cards to pay my mortgage and anything that my financing bank manages (property tax, home insurance, etc. ) and they would not allow me to pay with ANY credit card. I think is up to your financing bank but I think is BS they have a say so on how you pay your bills. Let me know if you are able to with Southwest but I believe is the receiver of the money who gets to choose if they will accept payment with a credit card or not, unfortunately.

Yes, that would be the ideal way to do it! However, don't spend too much on the cards too soon. It doesn't matter from which issuer, Chase looks at them all and counts them up towards their 5/24 rule.

I don't understand this. You said if you get the Business card, you will get the welcome (sign up) bonus = 80k points. You said if you sign up for a personal card, you will get the welcome bonus (also contingent on the spending). Each of these point totals are attached to two separate cards. So how do you figure to attach the points from the personal card to the points from the Business card towards that singular goal of 135k?? On the video, you simply "added" them, but that isn't how it works, is it?

Separate cards, but the same rapid rewards account. You can have a personal card, and a business card in the same Southwest rapid rewards account number.
