I wouldn’t normally dare to contradict you (love your reviews), but, I collected my Ping Chipr yesterday afternoon. Went straight to the range. I’m a very mature 20.7 handicap golfer with arthritis WHO CANT CHIP. So, with a putter grip I totally concur with you 7 handicap tester, max comfortable distance 35 to 40 yards and after a half hour and half a bucket of balls I got it pretty dialled in off both hard and soft mats. But here’s the contradiction, changed to a normal golf grip and with a very straight through half swing I could, with ease, punch a ball out to 75 yards with excellent accuracy and extreme consistency. I never tried a proper full swing but I have to say (and I can only speak for myself) I would be very comfortable with any shot from 80 yards and in, just need to change my grip as it gets closer.

How did you find the head weight? I saw one yesterday and head felt super heavy but I guess that’s to help promote that putting like stroke?
@paulaskey1508
@paulaskey1508 2 жыл бұрын
@@SmokeyRobbo yes the head is heavy, but with a steel shaft it did feel pretty balanced. Not so sure how it would work with a graphite shaft. For me I liked the weight, it promoted a very smooth and deliberate takeaway and swing.

The best club I've ever bought, I've dropped my gap wedge and punch this in from 80 yards, unless I've to go over a bunker I'm using the ping from anywhere around the green.

OK the key to the Chipr success? The weighted soul. / design. Flop shot you ask? Believe it or not I have on many occasions been able to lob the ball over the trap and have it check up fairly close. If you are in heavy grass or rough just simple open up the club face and drive through the ball as you would with a wedge. Open face also works when trying to control loft and run on the ball. This is an all purpose. I never use wedges for chipping. Love this club and oh yes you don't a graphite shaft. Ever use a wedge with a graphite shaft?

Really like that the review was from a 7 hdcp golfer who is struggling around the greens. I saw Rick Shiels review this club but he's a low handicapper so it was great to have a regular golfer with poor chipping provide the verdict.

I’ve been golfing for 6 years now.. chipping WAS 100% my weak link. Being a Ping guy, I found a Chipr used (still looked new) and bought it. I’ve never holed a chip shot in my life. Took the Ping Chipr to practice using it and holed 3 times! Love this club and it works perfectly! Even from rougher lies.

This could be a great addition to someone's Bag. Dean seems to have a problem with controlling the low point of his wedge, probably caused by his arms being too stiff and standing too square at address. I've had this same issue in the past when a Coach advised me to Chip like a Putt. For some bizarre reason you end up locking everything up and all the "feel" goes. It might help if he opens up his stance (a little) and that he tries to take the tension out of his arms by relaxing his grip and unlocking his wrist & elbow joints (slightly). It helped me so hopefully, it might help Dean

I use a 45 degree Mazel, Square Strike style type, chipper. It's a confidence boosting club, when you see your ball land within 50 yards of the green and you know you've got a simple putting style chip to get onto the putting surface from almost any type of lie.

I can perfectly relate to Dean’s struggles… same hcp, with on and off chipping yips: I’ve got long periods when my chipping is good, and then weeks when I struggle and my rounds go south… I tried it a couple of days ago and I found it very easy and consistent: I’ve ordered one, just in case…

Great video, Soph! You ought to do a whole series of these kinds of lessons, perhaps with a slant towards the slower-swinging crowd. I'd dig that. And I can both sympathize and empathize with Dean. I'd recommend a couple of Cleveland CBX wedges in addition to a chipper. And maybe a slight change in how he approaches these shots. My main thought for all short game shots is, "move the ball forward toward the target, at the right pace" rather than "hit the ball up in the air." That includes shots where I have to hit it high. You're thinking forward - not up. This helps me keep my hands in front of the ball through the shot, maintaining wrist angle, and helps keep me from flipping, which gets you skulls and chunks and chili-dips and all other conceivable manner of disaster. I concentrate on the "forward" part and I let the club's loft handle the "up" part. But you hardly ever really need to hit a ball very high around the greens. People do, because it looks cool on that one-out-of-twenty shots where you pull it off. For that shot over the bunker, a really high shot wasn't necessary. Seemed like there was a lot of green to work with. Dean only needed a little bit more loft. Had he hit even PW or 50º wedge fairly solidly all three would have been on the green.

I have at times been a good chipper of the ball, I use the "rule of 12 technique", but I have to practice it quite a lot to maintain the "feel" and that hasn't been easy since I bought my Xxio irons, as you pointed out they have a tendency to ping off the club face. And I will be soon changing jobs so practice will be very limited in the future. So after seeing some of the reviews about the smart sole 4 I've gone ahead and bought one. One practice session and quite mixed results. As long as I can use a ratio of 1/3 I can get some really good results, but less than that and the smart sole is practically useless, and the sole doesn't lend itself to being opened up. If I played on links courses then I'd have one in my bag for sure, but on my parkland course...maybe not. Footnote, my wife used one for years and loved it, always told me to stop faffing around and get one!

I've got one on order and can't wait to try it. I am a poor chipper off of tight lies around the green, but the turf is too unpredictable to use a putter from 3 yards off the green. I hope I can save 1-2 strokes per round with this club in my bag.

Hi Sophie just rewatched your Video👍, (2weeks ago bought my Ping ChipR) Practice with it a little it was good but ran out a little too much, So got the loft increase buy (2.5deg) to 41deg and it’s now perfect for me👍,I think this is the Best New Club this year,And think Ping must have spent a lot of time & money Designing & Testing this Club😃, I also believe it will become the most sort after Club of the year👍, The strength of my game is from 100yds and in👍, But found it difficult to judge distances with chip and run shots, But with this club found it easy, Because of the following:- The shorter length of shaft, the extra weight in the head, The upright lie angle, The extra spin the tighter groove’s generate, And the super feel you get with shots😃, I also get great distance control on full shots, Would love to see you do a full review from all distances, I think you will be amazed how accurate you are with it👍, I got mine with a graphite shaft and get a lovely penetrating high flight with it😃, and it’s so easy to hit full shots, Thanks Sophie would love to here you’re thoughts, Dickey 9hcp 75year Senior Golfer

I recall seeing an interview with Roger Cleveland many years ago and he talked about using a chipper occasionally and even using it for longer shots. Cleveland came out with a really weird iron set in the early 90’s that looked a bit like chippers. That’s probably the context of the interview that I’m thinking of. Always enjoy your reviews Sophie.

For chipping around the green my first choice was a 9 iron followed by 8 and 7 depending how much "run" I judged I needed - however the consistency of strike meant that results were variable some fantastic, some good and the rest mediocre or worse ! I have bought the ChipR with the aim or getting a consistent strike therefore more control on distance using the "putter" stroke - fingers crossed

I purchased one to try out on my local links courses. The more I practiced with it,the more confident I became with it. I have only ever holed out once when chipping. That was until I started using the Chipr. Now I’m disappointed if I don’t hold at least 1 chip per 2or 3 rounds . It’s in my bag to stay. I’ve even started using it with an iron swing and up to about 55/60 yards. If you practice with it I’m certain it will improve the scoring off any 10+ handicaper.

Have a solid short game but bought the ChipR and Cleveland C figuring one of them would wind up in my wife’s bag😀. She preferred the C and it has really helped her confidence around the green over the ChipR. I prefer the ChipR As I think it is more flexible on longer shots and can open it up slightly if needed. Having used the Rule of 12’s for years I can say it is not as accurate as a well executed 7 iron chip BUT there is much less chance of a poor shot. For most mid to high handicap it is worth a try and they likely have room in their bag after a good look at their gapping and club use. We have used the chippers for several rounds and use them enough to clearly justify a place in the bag.

Sweet dig at Rick. Viewers should know that Rick is the first one to tell you his chipping is weak. He reviewed this club, but raised the most salient issue regarding it: which club do you remove to make room for it? The club itself doesn't look like a typical chipper. It has a 9-iron loft and its club face looks like an iron But the lie angle and length is similar to a putter. I have one. I'm just trying it out now. I don't use a putting grip, however. I put a putting stroke on the ball, and I play it back in my stance. I try to use a 3:1 ratio; 3 yards of roll for every yard of carry. Thus, a 16-yard shot would fly 4 yards and roll 12. This is adjusted for greens speed, where I'm going to land it, and uphill/downhill/sidehill. It is less versatile than using my wedge set, but I really like its consistency. You use a putting--not chipping--stroke. But it still leaves us the question: Which club will I replace?
@annefilippobertozzi7601
@annefilippobertozzi7601 Жыл бұрын
I ordered one yesterday: as soon as I’ll receive it, I’ll go to my driving range and I’ll do a trackman session, in order to see how it reacts and its average distance on full shots. Then I might replace my actual gamer that goes the same distance. After a month, how do you feel it and how did you decide which club to take out from your bag?
@richdouglas2311
@richdouglas2311 Жыл бұрын
@@annefilippobertozzi7601 The last thing you'll want to do is hit full shots with it. It's not designed for that. The club will be too upright, for one thing. (Something like 70 degrees) Second, the swing weight will be far to heavy (something like E-5). It has no use as a full-swing club and at least two severe limitations. The club's value is that it produces a chip shot with a putting stroke. That's it. It is an improvement over those old chippers because of the upright lie angle and heavier swing weight, but it has no other uses. Which club to replace? I still haven't made that decision. I'll probably just leave it out. If I was forced to put it in, I'd remove the LW. But because I play single-length irons, my SW is the same length as an 8-iron. That makes it difficult to use with some greenside shots. So, in order to put this chipper into play, I'd have to remove my LW and replace my single-length SW with a traditional one. I'm not sure this chipper is worth all of that, especially when chipping is a good part of my game to begin with.

One of my biggest problems is, I don't get enough GIR, so I'm always just off the green. As a result, I often have to chip on the green and it doesn't go to plan more often than not. I could easily see myself taking out my 5 iron (which pretty much goes the same distance as my 6 iron, when I can hit it) and put this ping chipper in the bag. It also helps that it looks like an iron, which is always a positive.

I have hit inside 100 once for fun during a round so yess, they can fly. 40, 50 60 yards from a terribe lie is where they shine. Very easybto hit and Cleveland didva tremendous job with their new smartsole 4 design. Cheater clubs

I have a friend that is about a 9 and has the chip yips (he can miss THE GREEN from 5 yds)! If he could just chip decently, he would be 5 or under!

I guess everybody has their trouble point. But to play to a 7 and chip like he does he must never miss a fairway or green.

Only issue I would have with this it is a one trick pony. Bump and run. If you need any loft like to hit over Sand Trap or Elevated Green where Loft is required.

I am looking at getting a smart sole chipper, would you recommend it rather than the Ping ChipR?
@rlbjr
@rlbjr 2 жыл бұрын
@@ollye4786 Definitely. The Ping ChipR just looks like a slightly wider soled iron. The Cleveland chippers sole is much wider and they have been making these types of clubs for years.

Tempting but how could it be better than chipping with different club/loft to have the best flight/roll ratio ? If I have a distance with 2/3 of fairway and 1/3 of green how that chipper could be used ? At the contrary if I have 1/4 of fairway and 3/4 of green what would be great for that chipper why can’t I use my putter or an easy 9 iron short chip ? A 42 loft chipper can’t replace a 58 or a 60wedge that you are afraid to « thin or blade » just because of the flight/roll ratio …

I have a chipper in my bag right now. I like a wider sole than this Ping ChipR. I’d just as soon use my 9 iron than this one. This ping ChipR doesn’t look like enough help for me.

Dean has the same thing going on as me. He has the chipping yips. It all starts after he hits his approach shot into what I call the Danger Zone i.e. the place where you have to hit a chip shot, to access the green / pin if your lucky. On walking to the stationary ball your automatically on the back foot because your dreading the shot as confidence is that low (3 out 10 proves the point). So the frame of mind is all wrong for the forthcoming effort. That leads to poor prep, poor execution and poor result leading to more less of confidence and hence less enjoyment (felt like walking off as point of reference). Chipping yips just like putting yips can destroy your belief that you can play the game to a reasonable standard. NOW If you look at Deans first shots with both his own iron and then the chipper the yips are evident, body and head movement is apparent leading to the knees buckling and moving resulting in a top of thin shot at best. Low confidence and poor technique lead to no feel and poor execution. Once he started to use the ChipR (other brands are available) you could see his posture and movement slightly changed which bodes well for the merits of this particular club and the confidence this will hopefully bring. Additionally after using the ChipR a few times and going back to his own iron his execution had improved slightly which is a big plus. As I started off I have the same issues as Dean, my potential remedies are, I buy a chipper of some kind to help restore confidence and allow me to enjoy the game a little better or stop moving my body and head during the execution or seek professional assistance or it could be a combination of all three. I hope Dean is able to sort this element of the game just like me. M
