The Easybeats, From Brian Henderson Bandstand - 18 June 1966
An episode from the Australian pop music series.
The Easybeats were an Australian rock band that formed in Sydney in late 1964. Considered one of the most important rock acts in Australia during the 1960s, they enjoyed a level of success that in their country rivaled the Beatles and became the first Australian rock act to score an international hit with the 1966 single "Friday on My Mind", as well as one of the few in Australia to exclusively write and record original material. During their six-year run, they scored 15 top 40 hits in Australia, including "She's So Fine" and "Women (Make You Feel Alright)", with other No. 1 hits including "Friday On My Mind" and "Sorry". They broke up in 1969 despite no official announcement; singer Stevie Wright died in 2015 and rhythm guitarist George Young (brother of Angus and Malcolm Young of AC/DC) died in 2017.

Strange that half the songs are live and the other half mimed. The live ones in particular show how great they were. The best band to come out of Australia. The most original band in the world, in terms of songwriting, throughout the 60's. Maybe they still are.

Although Friday On My Mind was yet to come, in terms of camaraderie, this was the height of their careers. Outside of George and Harry in later years, the boys were never particularly close. The whole thing sort of fell apart in England. There may be many reasons but it is sad that Snowy was the only one to attend Stevie's funeral in 2015. Stevie and Dick had their own personal demons, and like for all of us, I guess sometimes it just gets a bit too much.

At the time, I don't think George was compos mentis. I believe he had some medical issues. They ultimately led to his death, I believe. George and Harry were quite successful. They wrote and produced songs at Albert's for AC/DC, I believe, wrote and recorded Evie with Stevie Wright in 1974, I think it was. That went to Number One and was the Australian classic of the year, and one for the 1970's, and all time. They wrote hits for John Pail Young like I Hate The Music, Yesterday's Hero, and - of course - Love Is In The Air. All Number Ones in the 1970's. They released songs as Flash and The Pan like Down Among The Dead Men (about the Titianic), Hey Hey St Peter, Welcome To The Universe etc. All did well, some better than others, on the charts. At the time of this video, Wright/Young were writing the hit tracks and the lyrics were simple. Friday On My Mind was written by Vanda and Young and that was their international smash hit. It was recorded in London, I believe. Around the time, Sorry by The Easybeats - recorded earlier in Australia - was released and it, too, went to Number One. Great riff. Also, at the time this video was recorded, if I remember correctly, The Beatles were ready to go into the studio at Abbey Road to record Revolver. So, while The Easybeats are great, they were still - like everybody else - following in The Beatle's wake.

@@darrylmcgarry5780 Impossible for any group to compete with the Beatles. But as a rock band their Australian hits IMHO, were a bit more harder edged than the fab four's. Their first three albums were all original material, pretty impressive for 1965 and 1966.

Rather oddly this was a mixture of live and mimed performances on the one show. Wonder why they felt they couldn't deliver In My Book and I'll Make You Happy live?
