Sound on! The step pyramid Temple of Kukulcán at Chichén Itzá, Mexico, a 30m high structure built by the Pre-Columbian Maya civilisation sometime between the 8th - 12th century CE, demonstrates a peculiar acoustic phenomenon: clapping directly in front of it sends back an echo which sounds similar to the local quetzal bird, which was sacred to the Mayan people. Hear the temple's echo compared with the call of a quetzal bird in our video.

amazing. I read that different soudsources apart from clapping generate different sounds (not just Queztal) what sound must this temple have emitted when an entire city was bustling around it ?
@jonwesselink
@jonwesselink 2 жыл бұрын
I wonder as well if the general population of that time was aware of this or that the noises made from the hustle and bustle made them think there was a constant sound of their gods. Maybe if the community was not made aware of the sound then it could act as some sort of population control. I know the ball game they played did that in a way through the sacrifices. So fascinating. Another thing to check out is the temple of warriors that makes the sound of a rattle snake when you clap i think.

@@claudiaclaudia936 Not all the answers, but I know the difference between Olmecs & Mayans. And, yes, these were primitive cultures compared to others at the same time. Don't forget the human sacrificing (including babies). Also, they were forever at war with their neighbors. They were some of the most violent cultures ever: Death and war, and occasionally some turquoise. That's about it.
