hi Aathira! It depends on the University, but for Econ, you can graduate early if you finish all the requirements. I would go to your academic office/academic counselor and ask them to look over a graduation plan with you

Yeah, I agree with Omar; there are some people that will purposely denigrate UCLA's Econ type majors, and that UCLA will be excellent. I think you should try to join a club at UCLA in finance, which is a broad field. UCLA has an umbrella club, Undergraduate Business Society, and sub fields in IB, Consulting, etc.

@@GCY1 The Business side of the management coursework is offered by Anderson School of Management ("ASM"), which is UCLA's business school. It offers courses to UCLA undergrads, but it doesn't offer a BusAdmin BS degree; it offers MBAs, DBAs, and MS degrees in things like Statistics. Stats is gaining in popularity along with Data Theory (UCLA's version of Data Science), which are good majors to enter the field of Data Analytics. The Economics side is obviously offered by the Econ department. As Ally stated, a degree in Business Economics will include some from management and some from economics. The courses you'd take for this degree would be some accounting from ASM and some from the Econ department like Micro- and Macroeconomics, a stats course, and an Econometrics course, along with the lower-division prereqs, which include Calc. There are a few finance courses offered by ASM and some entrepreneurial classes -- there are minors in accounting and entrepreneurship at UCLA. A lot of students like the Bus Econ degree because they want to go into IB, consulting, or wealth management and accounting especially for any finance job is necessary to be able to read financial statements. But it's actually the Econ Department at UCLA that has the most comprehensive amount of courses. There are > 100 upper division course listings, for which, here's the link: catalog.registrar.ucla.edu/ucla-catalog19-20-632.html The coursework for Econ 106 includes > 10 listings, and Econ's coursework offers a lot of management type classes, which is a lot more than ASM's offerings. ASM only offers about 35 courses and here's its link: www.registrar.ucla.edu/Academics/Course-Descriptions/Course-Details?SA=MGMT&funsel=3 -- you'd have to click on the upper-division course tab. The comprehensive coursework by the Econ department has a good amount of people who switch out of Bus Econ to straight Econ, but if you want a finance job, you should probably take some accounting courses also.

But let me add that if you were to attend UCLA to be sure to join the business fraternities (they obviously include women also), clubs like the Undergraduate Business Society, which is kinda-sorta the umbrella org of all the sub-groups like those for IB, Consulting, Accounting, Marketing, etc. And by all means do what Ally has done which is take as many internships as you can to determine to what business sector you'll be most attracted. All the best.

That’s an awesome combination!! Definitely will have a lot of applications in both business and CS... but I don’t see that too frequently amongst my peers just because those are both competitive major fields at UCLA. If you can manage it, it’s definitely a great combo!

@@allygong is a cs minor just less classes you have to take than the cs major? Im in community college rn as a cs major considering switching to econ. The reason why i want to minor in CS is cuz i dont want my cs classes that i already took to go to waste lol. Also i feel like of i minored in cs it would give you an edge in what ever major you go with.

@@omarzaifulizan3064 Pure CS is in Engineering at UCLA, so you'd probably have to get into the E school at the University. Economics is in Letters and Science, which is generally easier to which to gain entry. But from community college, they're both extremely tough; you'll probably need a good 3.9 gpa with a lot of the prereqs done. Here's a link on what gpa it takes to transfer: www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/transfers-major and click on UCLA as the campus. Both take near-perfect grades. With that said, there's a good interdisciplinary CS major with Linguistics. It doesn't take as good of grades to get into that, and it's in L&S, which again, is a little easier for entry. It might be tough to add Econ as a double, because of the high number of requisite courses in CS & Linguistics. If you want to major in Econ and take CS type classes, there's a couple ways to do it: -- Major in Econ and take the Specialization in Computing, Programming in Computing (PIC) coursework. Just about anyone can add the specialization onto his/her degree. Here's the link to the PIC courses at UCLA, which is offered by the Mathematics Department: www.math.ucla.edu/ugrad/pic-course-descriptions -- You can major in Econ and take a Stats major or minor. Stats will have some programming classes in its department, and you should be able to add the Computing Specialization. -- You can major in Data Theory, which has more CS classes than Stats, and some of its coursework will be through the PIC coursework, then you could tack on Economics as a minor or possibly a double. -- There are other CS-based majors outside of Engineering like Mathematics of Computation in the Math Department and Computational and Systems Biology from the Bio Department. But these would be tough to tack on an Econ major. Possibly, you could go Econ as a major and minor in Digital Humanities which is CS-type classes for Humanities and Social Science majors. I think your best bet would be Econ as a major and Specialization in Computing, and try to take as many CS classes as possible, because Econ is a pretty short major.

You'd also have to be more active at networking, because i personally think a lot of people in econ/biz econ at UCLA aren't there to pursue startup (more there to pursue banking, finance, consulting, etc.) You'd want to join clubs like Bruin Entrepreneurs

@@fatimag3731 A degree in Economics from a good university can help you gain employment in the ABC field (Accounting, Banking, Consulting). Only dcotors compete with them in terms of average salaries. A degree in IT would more likely equate to working in the IT support department to help Economics graduates in an ABC (or other) company.
