This tank is so elegant and yet simple. I have been maintaining a 30 gallon Walstad tank for 3 years now. It is going great. I would like to start a 100 gallon one, but with sand just like this one. Did the sand stay on top of the dirt or did it get mixed up with dirt? What kind of light would you recommend for Walstad. I have tried many combinations and ended up using both fluorescent and LED together.

@MD Fish Tanks IF you have ever wanted to start a second channel, I bet a MD Plus channel where you post once a week (at the start, maybe more once you get the hang of it) of nothing but peaceful B reel of one of your tanks, rotating though your tanks. We love watching you build your tanks, but what I wish we could see more often is updates on tanks, and a second channel with nothing but tank spotlights of exclusively tank footage would be great. Basically expand on the last couple of minutes of your build videos with no voice over, just tanks and music. Would love to see it.

Good to read she's still active. I've chatted with her and Tom Barr on some of the clubs like Plantedtank and Scape in the past. This was over 10 years ago, but she was very helpful and objective. My concern with some of the newer content creators who are "trying" the Walstad method is they completely skip the mineralization process, create too shallow or deep of a bed, and fail to prevent algae blooms, anaerobic pockets, etc. I'm not sure if they they didn't research enough, or if they're just cutting out content for time, but if they're influencing people to use potting soil (with organics) the incorrect way, then they're going to waste people's time, energy, and money.
@mmoolloo
@mmoolloo Жыл бұрын
You probably already got this answer, but I couldn't find it in the comments. @4:53 approximately, you asked if moistening the soil was a good idea. In my experience, this helps because the water weighs down the small particles of the soil and makes them a single "mass". This helps because if you left the soil dry and then poured sand and gravel on top, you'd get some dust particles airborne which would then stick to the glass, making the water cloudy once you fill the aquarium up.

My husband was An Air Force Officer Enivironmental Engineer. @@caffeinatedbee9554 I only have one, my local fish store had two but as I was observing them, they were very unfriendly to each other, so I only brought one home. I absolutely love my little Sea Biscuit. I definitely suggest starting some sort of food colony to have on hand. Snails, daphnia, guppy fry, shrimp fry, or live blood worms. My little guy is being rather picky about the frozen blood worms. He seems to want live food to chase around. So I have to make the worms wiggle to get him interested. I'm waiting for my guppy to give birth, my berried shrimp to give birth, my snails to lay eggs, and my daphnia to hatch. Hopefully I will have more than enough live food for him and my betta once it gets going.

17:00 yes, fully agreed you need a test kit. i would highly recoment the freshwater one over the salt water one for both fresh and salt water set up's. the reasoning being that they are the same exact test kits for the same price but the fresh water gives both PH and PH high testing were the salt water only gives you PH high

Great Job. I was looking for ideas for scaping my new 20G Long Betta Tank and the 55G room-divider Community Aquarium. I am upsizing both Aquariums now that I know that physically I can do this. With torn rotator cuffs in both shoulders, a fractured 3rd rib, and a few fractured vertebrates been serious issues until now. I will be doing this slowly as I am 70 and still have co-pays, etc. I have been buying the ingredients to building a Walstead/Father Fish Substrate. My fish are doing well in my 6.6 Betta Tank and my 3 Quarantine Tanks of Fish, Snails, Rocks, Driftwood, and Plants... and Ceramic BioMedia that have been sitting in the Tank building up Biological Bacteria and Biofilm awaiting to go into these new tanks. Since my first Aquarium where I did not learn about not capping the Fluval Stratum Stratum in the past... had caused me problem back in October when I started my first Aquarium. Out of frustration, I emptied my tank into a 5G Quarantine Tank, rinsed the gravel to get rid of the Fluval Stratum. I rinsed it into a food-safe bucket for future use. I just used straight gravel and fertilize. Since then, I have done a lot more research and have a better idea of what makes a more stable Aquarium. I have the sand, and have most of the ingredients for this Substrate Mix. I got a few in the mail so I am much closer to having all of the needed ingredients. I'll be using some of the Seachem Red Flourite in this mix since it is a Clay product. I have the Fluval Stratum and will use a bit in the mix since I have it. Between making this Substrate Mix with the Aquatic PeatMoss that I used in the 6.6G will be diluted between the 55G and with the 20G Long Aquariums. I still have to get just plain Topsoil for this mix. I won't be using the different MiracleGrow Soil Mixes that I had in storage as they will not work now, but the Akadama (Clay) Bonsai Soil Amendment and the Crushed Lava Rock will be terrific as it provides lil places for the Biological Bacteria to grow in. I have a handful of Substrate, Water-Filter, and some Floating Plants from a nice family in our local Aquarium Club that was a blessing. And, some Floating Plants and tank water from another Club Member. This plus some from each of my tanks we be a real Bless to jump start the Biological Filter in these 2 new tank setups. Great Look. As always, you did a great video. Not to fast for this woman still healing from the post concussion traumatic brain injury.

Every time you do a scape it always looks so perfect and things so even and nice but when I do it things look uneven and out of place 😆. Guess it's all part of the learning process.
