This can’t be quantified as Rock!? This is Rock, Funk, Jazz and Fusion mixed in a bowl and you get “Frankenstein!” Both Winter brothers are so underrated yet killer musicians!

You guys were loose and having fun with Frankenstein - and it was a pleasure to watch, with so many of us knowing one surprise after another was yet to come. I don’t know anout being “the Black Edgar”though as Edgar and Johnny are both albinos (notice one of their albums was called “They Only Come Out at Night). Maybe Edgar is the White You. 😂 The guitar player (dressed in white) is Rick Derringer who had a terrific career of his own, starting at age 16 with his first hit “Hang On Sloopy,” which he wrote in 1965 at age 16. He is a highly respected guitarist. I saw Rick as a solo act anout 5 times from the mid ‘70s to early ‘80s, and twice more with Edgar Winter as shown in this video. Such great times! At age 63 now, I’d like to go back to the 70s a couple days a week if it were possible. Hangin’ with you guys is pretty close! Thank you kindly for taking us along on your journey, fellas.

yes, this is a "live" performance... I think it was "The Midnight Special", so a studio audience, but it was definitely live. With Rick Derringer (Rock'n'Roll Whoo-chi-koo sp?) on guitar.

This is an iconic instrumental in rock history. The shortened radio version was a huge hit. Your faces were just FAF when Edgar kept switching instruments and killing those keys and synth, sax and timbales. Loved your reaction to this classic. 😂❤

That's an ARP2600 synthesizer. "The box" is the instrument, the keyboard Edgar is wearing around his neck is only the "controler unit" - so an extension sending signals to the ARP. But you could create a continuous envelope signal directly on the ARP, and then manipulate it through volume and color, or change the wave form. Creating those moments on stage in 1972 was a bit tricky, because analog sound design doesn't always allow an exact repetition of events. So each night on stage you never really knew how it will turn out.

That's why the guys back then are now called the pioneers, because they all had to do it the hard way, simply because technology today was nothing like them . But of course we had some of the best musicians then too who all paved the way 👍

Yeah ARP 2600 was definitely normally used as a studio piece, only a few musicians were this good at using it as an actual live performance device

The black Edgar Winter...that's hilarious LMFAO. Loved your reaction, boys. BTW, that is an ARP 2600 Edgar was playing. He was the 1st to ever strap a huge keyboard controller around his neck, so he could have mobility on the stage while playing his synthesizer. Phenomenal and genius. Some say Edgar is the father of the keytar. He is also a phenomenal blues singer. Johnny passed a few years back but Edgar is still with us.

Oh man, I was wondering when you guys would get here 🙂. This performance is just flat-out epic, there's no other word for it. Edgar Winter is a bad man with any instrument you put in front of him - add Rick Derringer on guitar and a killer rhythm section and you've got musical genius. Making my morning once again - peace and love from Canada! ** This was a live performance for a BBC show, no audience in the studio, but killer stuff all the way.

The great Rick Derringer is playing guitar here. You should check out his hit "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo" There is a good chance you have heard, but it still worth a listen. It was a staple on rock radio back in the day.

This was a live performance from The Old Grey Whistle Test, a 1970’s U.K. t.v. Show on BBC television which showcased cutting edge music. It was essential weekly viewing for lovers of serious music.

Oh please listen to the studio version of this song. Well worth your time! I saw him when he was Edgar Winter's White Trash around 1970 before this ever came out. Dr.John opened for them and it was a great concert to see before they were world famous.

The bass man Dan Hartman had hits of his own later in his career. I Can Dream About You and Instant Replay are 2 I recall. Guitarist Rick Derringer had an early hit with his group The McCoys - Hang On Sloopy, Rock and Roll Hootchie Coo later. Chuck Ruf was a great drummer also.

"that machine" is an ARP synthesizer. he has the big modular one with the keyboard controller. Most of those lived in studios and didn't tour, but Edgar took his out and they made each other famous. ARP also made the full keyboard size with the synthesizer circuits above the keys, as made famous by Stevie Wonder, Bernie Worrell of P-Funk, and Junie Morrison of the Ohio Players..... Junie's ARP is the Funky Worm sound effect still used in hiphop today! I am lucky enough to own a rare ARP that was played by Bernie Worrell in 2010. It's the last model they made as they went out of business in 1983, only 10 short years after this video. Business is hard.

That’s Rick Derringer on guitar. Rick is a great guitarist. His first hit, he was 16 in a group called the McCoys. The song was a pop hit called Sloopy Hang On in 1967. His biggest hit was Rock and Roll Hootchie-Coo!!! He’s still performing I think.

You should give his brother Johnny Winter a listen - tunes like "Highway 61 Revisited', 'Be Careful With A Fool' (Great Song), 'Memory Pain,' Hustle Down in Texas' and his cover of Chuck Berry's 'Johnny B. Goode.' Albums like "Johnny Winter (1969)", The Progressive Blues Experiment (1968), Let Me In (1991), Live Johnny Winter Ang (1971), Guitar Slinger (1984) and Second Winter (1969). He was a Blues/Rock Icon; RIP, Johnny.

I'm old and I originally heard this in 1973 and I loved it. The days of live music on weekly television. This was recorded at the BBC for their show entitled The Old Grey Whistle Test. It always showcased up and coming bands from the time and you can find some real gems on there. All the studio work was totally live with no audience. .

The little guy in white playing guitar is Rick Derringer. He was a producer on this album. He was also in a band called The McCoy's who had a hit in the sixties wuth the song "Hang On Sloopy". He went on into the seventies as a solo act and had a hit called "Rock and Roll Hootchie Koo". He opened for Heart when I saw then in 1977. Both he and Edgar haved played in Ringo Starrs All Star Band.

I bought the record and played this on my portable record player as a 13 yr old in 1973, over & over again. This was the bomb back then, still is. Man, tripping me out on the memories guys! Nice 💜

That machine you said you were needing? That's an OLD-school synthesizer with keyboard connected. They used to be hideously expensive, but if you knew the equipment, you could get truly astonishing sounds out of them.

This song was actually performed three years previously with his older brother Johnny Winter at the Royal Albert Hall in 1970. This rare recording was released in 2004 as one of several live bonus tracks. Which is on Johnny Winter's Second Winter album. (Loved what ya'll said "Che is the new Black Edgar Winter)🤣This was fun thanx for sharing guys

"Tobacco Road" was Edgar sitting in with brother Johnny's band (which included Stevie Ray Vaughan's future bassist Tommy Shannon). This was Edgar's band.

Not just the different styles, they got the song name from someone coming into the studio & seeing Edgar w/ about a dozen spliced sections of reel-to-reel tape hanging on his shoulders, arms, head, draped all over amps & equipment, etc...they put the original song together from bits & pieces of dozens of different "bodies" of recorded sound & came up w/ Frankenstein

You have been Frakenschteeened ..The guy Dan Hartman playing the bass wrote the song Living in America that James Brown made into a huge hit ..If you remember a hit called Instant Replay and I Can Dream about You ,that is the guy .. Edgar had a 1st album solo called Entrance and then he had the White Trash Band, one studio and a live album ,that is all ,they were awesome and then this band The Edgar Winter Group and then Edgar went solo again by 1975 .. Band connections was very short lived but really great and his song Dying To Live has been sampled by Eminem and Tupac .

Saw them in concert in 1977 with the Outlaws and Lynyrd Skynryd at Legion Field in Birmingham, AL where Alabama play Auburn. It was incredible. At the end, when Skynryd was playing Freebird the city cut the power and there was a riot. Unreal.

This is Edgar Winter Group and it was a live recording. The brothers mostly did their own thing but played together a lot. Johnny was a blues guitarist and had his own band.

Yes. Johnny and Edger are twin brothers. I’ve alway thought the Winter Brothers had no other choice but to be musical geniuses. Being born with albinonism in Texas…no way they could go outside in the 365 hot sun. All they could do was learn music. Genius!

Man this song was soooo awesome back in the 70s my dad came home with our 74 custom Dodge Van and he had a 8 track in it with quadrapfonic sound where the music would jump around the speakers it was frickin awesome every time I hear this song.....Egar Winters they only com out at night👍👍👍👍👍👍

Edgar was Johnny's younger brother and the two were a Texas duo since they were kids and went their own ways in the 70's and hooked up for a few tours and albums. Johnny went more Blues. Johnny passed a couple of years ago and Edgar did a tribute album with guests last year which won a grammy. Still going strong.

I have this eight track tape in my collection, this came out in the 70s on a pink 8 track tape which I still have, incredible!🥁💣🎸🔥 check out their other big hit called “FREERIDE”, yes Johny and Edgar are brothers and they are albinos!
