That's how gospel was sang back then, it was serious business she was feeling the meaning of the song deep in soul. She was trying to translate that meaning to the people as to why it was a happy day or will be a happy day, not just rockin to the beat and artificially smiling for entertaining purpose like they do now. No sexy outfits no glitter no bling bling to distract you from the meaning of the powerful words. Understand the words you'll believe and feel more sentimental about the song.

I still reflect upon the 1960's and this uplifting song that all of the members of my Family and especially my Mother used to raise our arms and hands up towards the heavens and sing this song. Later in the early 1970's while over in Southeast Asia serving our Nation, my Mother sent it to me on cassette and I listened to it on my small compact cassette player and would feel the spirit and think of my Mother during my year long tour. God Bless you Mama. Roberto Antonio Echarren AKA: R.A.Sorensen

I remember it coming on the radio too. I was in a car and it was not a Christian Channel. My Moma was like yours. Praise and worship. .l was away from home and l missed my church . This song brought so much joy and peace to my soul. I still sing it today. Day by day from God Spell came out in the early seventies on radio. The sixties and early seventies seem so far away compared to todays gospel music. I told my son. When l die to play Oh happy Day and crank it up😁 Thank you for your service. I love Edwin singing it. He also has one on youtube with his church choir. Talking about bringing the house down .Oh Happy Day

Apostel! By what authority? Acts 1:21-22 states that for a man to be an apostle, he had to have been a member of the band of disciples from the beginning, and to have been an eyewitness of Christ's resurrection. An apostle is a "messenger" or "one who is sent" while a disciple is a "student" or "learner." Apostles were primarily people who had met and followed Jesus during his life and were called by him to spread the gospel. Disciples were simply any of Jesus' followers who devoted themselves to learning from him.

Dorothy Morrison! My goodness, what a voice! Unique in how low-pitched it is, too -- it's essentially a male tenor's voice. But if a man and woman sing exactly the same notes in pitch and audio frequency, the man is called a tenor and the woman...isn't. When a woman sings in a male tenor's range, she has a "contralto" voice. If she sings even lower, at the bottom of a tenor's range, she has a "contralto profundo" voice. But God forbid, not a tenor voice. Go figure. 🙄.

I can remember the 1st time I heard this song - like it was yesterday. I was 7 years old. I went to the Laundry Mat with my mom because our washing machine went nuts and flooded our basement that day. My dad wasn't home from work yet, so I helped her wring out what we could and took them to re-wash and dry them. I got a transistor radio for Christmas that year, and took it along to amuse myself. Once we got the clothes in the washers, I went out back into the parking lot. leaned back on the trunk of our car (a 1968 'deuce and a quarter!!!) and switched on my radio. I grew up in church and was very accustomed to good gospel singing, but when I heard "Oh Happy Day" that day, it was like a revelation. I've commented through the years about this, and some get it, some don't. But that's ok. It's clear I'm not the only one who did. Thank you, Edwin. I'll forever be in your debt.

There is a soft veil over gospel music today with the passing of Edwin Hawkins (August 19, 1943-January 15, 2018). His career spanned more than 6 decades and he was one of the last male gospel luminaries that seamlessly linked the best of gospel's rich recent history with its best present offerings. His well acknowledged "Oh Happy Day" to the vast public domain of iconic gospel songs has been song by choirs the world over and his Music and Arts Seminar series gave public attention to some of the best singers, writers, producers and directors that the world has ever seen. His collaborations with established artists are also well documented. An exceptional musician, choir director and spokesman for black gospel music, Edwin earned his title of Father of CONTEMPORARY Gospel for his work to refine gospel music and help it to tastefully grow beyond traditional gospel circles and churches. God's exceptional irony should not go unnoticed this day. On an occasion given to the leadership of an articulate pastor whose reminder of church leadership in bringing social change in Dr. Martin Luther King on King Day, it is worth noting Edwin’s music and yes that of his family -- Walter, Lynette, Daniel, Carol, Feddie, Gloria, cousin Shirley Miller and sister in law Tramaine --must be credited with delivering a little social change as well. I have no doubt that those who know of his music's feel a great deal of appreciation to the faith basic sounds that have impacted so many over the years!

Well, yes and no. A very interesting story. The original Hymn ("O Happy Day, That Fixed My Choice") was written by Phillip Doddridge, D.D., in England and published in 1755, 4 years after his death, but the melody was later revised by E. F. Rimbault, and both of these guys were "old white men". BUT, the version you and I know and love is "arranged", performed, and produced by Mr. Edward Hawkins. The lead singer, Dorothy Combs Morrison, would later add a more "contemporary" sound. I would say it is more of a "joint venture", albeit spread over several centuries, but yes, it is performed in the "traditional Black Music in America" that we know, but it's not "Cum by Yah" or "Swing Low Sweet Chariot".
