Christians should not expect serving Jesus to always be a comfortable experience. In fact, the opposite is often the case - God sometimes deliberately puts us in situations that are outside our comfort zone and beyond our competency. Why? The Apostle Paul answers that question this way:
But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. (2 Corinthians 4:7)
God wants it to be clear that whatever we may accomplish in our lives, we didn’t do it on our own. The excellence of the power is of Him, and not of us. So, God will put us in situations in which both we ourselves and other people can see clearly that we don’t have the natural talents, nor the experience and skills, to cope. That way, when we not only cope but triumph in those situations, He gets the glory.
When God called Abraham (then called Abram) to leave his family, country, and everything he was familiar with to go and live somewhere he didn’t even know! Most people would have been super nervous! But Abraham did just as God asked, taking a leap of faith, and God blessed Abraham greatly.
When we allow God to call us out of our comfort zones, it's mostly about His glory, but He also ensures that we benefit by the experience as well. We can see some of those benefits in the experience the disciples of Jesus had when He called them out of their comfort zones in a big way.
When God calls us into His service, He will almost always push us beyond our competency and out of our comfort zone.
