That reminds me of when I saw someone comment on a K-Pop video saying she was excited because hanging out with her Asian friends was giving her an Asian accent. And I don't think that works.

Of course it works, you learn how to pronounce the words practicing and hearing other people talk. Even if it's your own language, but another accent, you end up talking like them and using the same expressions. For some people it's faster like weeks, for others it takes years.

Mariana de Oliveira Saitu In context though, if I were to maybe hang out with someone who has a Chinese accent, and I'm already excellent with English in an English speaking country, then it would just appear like I'm faking the accent.

What about a white girl who went to a Chinese-majority school for 12 years, so she naturally picked up tons of Chinese characteristics? Like saying "ai ya!" I've been accused of having "yellow fever" but almost all my childhood friends were Chinese, not to mention over 60% of my classmates.
@Asnnerd

+Milfuelle100 Its only natural when you pick up things from the Chinese culture. :) Nothing wrong with that. But being Chinese, growing up with the culture values that your family thought you is different tho.
@WolframxYuuri95

There's nothing wrong with picking up a few things. It's just like an English speaking person goes to a different country that also speaks English and during their stay, they pick up some slang words from that country. An Egg is someone who is obsessed with a specific Asian culture and vehemently reject their own culture. I dated a guy like that. He's Russian but he detests himself so much that he tried to copy Japanese people. He only listens to Japanese music, tried to learn Japanese, only have Asian friends, tries to compete with Asian friends in academics, and obsessed over making sure I abandon any "Americanized" traits and become a "full" Chinese girl.

+So Duh Asian ARMY SHAWOL I totally agree, but tbh I'm white and just because of that I feel like I'm supposed to call myself western. But the way I grew up is more similar to the Asian cultures. Although, because of globalization and such - maybe I got the best of both worlds, idk.
@Asnnerd
@Asnnerd 8 жыл бұрын
essennagerry Well depends i guess. :) Your Western because you also grew up with Western parents right. But every Asian culture is different with of course some similarities, so i don't know what you mean by growing up like as in Asian culture. :0 I'm half Asian, half White and I grew up in a multicultural society. Altho I embrace both cultures, I still had to follow our family traditions from my Asian side. Like our culture is very important to us. But every Asian country has it's own values and traditions.
@essennagerry
@essennagerry 8 жыл бұрын
***** I mean that white doesn't automatically mean western and I didn't grew up western. I grew up in a kind of way that's more similar to the East Asian cultures. Even though it isn't an East Asian culture, but just... my culture. The only reason why I could be legitimately called Western is because I grew up geographically more to the West. :D The Western influence we have is media (but that's just as much as Asians countries). We got modernized within ourselves, as every country does, but it was also influenced by the West. Just like how Asia gets modernized within itself, but recently there has been some Western influence to that modernization. It's just that much. So I can't feel western at all.

Sometimes a person takes an interest in something and realizes they prefer certain aspects of it to what they know... They can even create their own personality and interests based off of a culture and add in their own flair. No harm done. If someone takes offense at that, its them with the problem.

I don't really see it as them trying to be a different race. Some people literally just have a personality that may resemble the stereotypical white/asian/black/hispanic/etc. They may have musical/entertainment/food interests that originate from a country they're not from, but who cares, they're being open-minded and learning about other cultures in the process. That doesn't necessarily mean they're trying to be another race imo. I do have a problem with people who get a big head over their "knowledge" in other cultures and glorify/accessorize it. Like I'm half Japanese, and I have weaboos trying to be my friend just because I'm Japanese. And when I tell them I'm not into naruto, sushi, vocaloid or whatever, they act like I'm such a disgrace and don't deserve to be Japanese. Like ???? Don't tell me crap like that when literally all you know about Japan is anime.

Why is it a negative stigma for someone to embrace another culture other than their own? Wouldn't it be ignorant for someone to just blindly follow the herd mentality of the culture they were raised in instead of learning something new? I don't see English people saying that everyone is English-washed for us speaking their language. How about being American-washed for using KZfaq (yes, I know the creators of YT were white and Asian). Embracing cultures ought to be promoted not frowned upon. We all need to open our minds and be more compassionate instead of judgmental. Personally, I love it when I see interracial couples or people learning a language other than their own, or trying different foods, or dancing to different music than what is in the mainstream.

There are differences between embracing, and being a wannabe. This video is mostly about being wannabe. Either you're an egg or a banana, it's just annoying.
@callmewaves1160
@callmewaves1160 9 жыл бұрын
Michael Panggabean yes but what if it is an ignorance thing on an individual level, say... The person just is unaccepting of a white person sharing an interest in their culture in general and the white person just has a general interest and isn't a wannabe asian? There are a lot of people who are like that, who do think that someone showing an interest in a culture other than their own is being a wannabe.
@gandaruvu
@gandaruvu 9 жыл бұрын
Alana Laverty if it's only on an individual level, then why does that even matter?
@GeminiGabRiElleSG
@GeminiGabRiElleSG 9 жыл бұрын
Alana Laverty There are a lot of people who have a lot of opinions on everything. The point of the video was talking about wannabes. So, if you're not under that category then it doesn't apply. You're going to get judged for anything you do. Even if you're not an "egg", just who cares? Because you're going to be a lot less ignorant at the end of the day.

As other people have stated below, many people can get bored with their own culture and begin romanticizing about other cultures that interest them (In this case Chinese/Japanese). However, they see these other cultures through rose tinted glasses. They create an image of the culture in their mind that is far different from what it is in reality. Then they try to live this new pseudo-culture as best they can (In this case; learning Chinese, practicing kung-fu, and believing in a butchered form of old-chinese mysticism). Quickly they begin to resent the culture they were born into. This is all fine except many times the culture these people focus their interest/borderline obsession (don't mean it as an insult but in many cases it's true) on is usually one that is dominated by people of a different race than themselves. This is a problem because, to many of them, they can't truly become one with this culture unless they're Asian/White/Black. It's also the one thing they can't change about themselves. Leading to some superficial depression and even more resentfulness. Strangely though, this isn't anything new. People have been fantasizing about foreign cultures for at least hundreds of years and almost certainly since the dawn of human civilization. Hell, some of America's founding fathers were Francophiles (Obsessed about France and romanticized the French way of life, yet weren't actually French). TL;DR People have been obsessing over foreign cultures for a long time. People need to stop doing so as it usually is mildly destructive to the person's self-esteem and is simply stupid. Figure out how you want to live in this world and live it. Stop pretending to be German, French, Japanese, or Chinese because of how cool it would be to be one of them. In the end, a lot of them are thinking about how cool it would be to be you. (P.S. There is a difference between admiring certain qualities of a culture, and wanting to dedicate a large chunk of your life to become part of it without even experiencing it authentically. Also, there is a difference between disowning your own heritage and respectfully participating in someone else's.)

But sometimes people do judge you because you either don't to Asian, Mexican, etc,etc. I'm mixed with Mexican, Native America, Chinese, English, Italian, and God knows what else lol. But usually when someone finds out my mixed background someone always has to be a smart butt. ;) But yes, I agree if you are doing it to disown your heritage it isn't healthy.

He was an African-American who had been living in Japan for a while was saying and bowing all of the proper Japanese phrases and she was a young Japanese adult who clearly had learned all of her English watching BET. She had the hair, the earrings, the clothes, the attitude and everything. Not as outrageous as a Japanese Lil Kim, but a bona fide JBAP, Japanese Black American Princess. I don't get this whole concept of "acting" like a race. Race is not a personality. Race is not a behavior. Race is not an attitude. Race is nothing more than genetics. People of all races can appreciate the various cultures of the world, and want to learn more about it, and perhaps even adopt certain aspects of it, without it pertaining to race whatsoever. I am a person of mixed race, but I love many aspects of Japanese culture and find the language fascinating. This does not mean I want to "be Japanese". If I were to go to study Japanese culture and language, and perhaps move to Japan, it would not mean I am "acting Japanese". It would simply mean adopting a new home, a new way of life, as the very same person that I already am. This entire idea of racial stereotypes and race shaming is ridiculous, and it needs to stop. You can appreciate the values of different cultures, and love peoples of all different ethnicities and backgrounds, and still love your own heritage.

+CJ Stone Tbh as a kid I was super annoyed that they called black people black. They're obviously brown. And I was surprised by how Asians were called yellow, I couldn't see why at all. And if we're to generalize the colors like that than whites wouldn't be white, but pink or simply bleh. Because that's what our color is, bleh. I love it, but it's a mixture of many colors. And the only difference between the color of Asian people and white is that their color is kind of like clay and clay could be yellow-ish. But really, that's all.

You're gonna have to give a bit more than "trust me" if you're making stupid claims like that. And that is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. Asian culture imitates European culture, and has done for the past 200 years.

WOW, I agree with the guy below, this is racist. I mean, you can't win..either you are an ignorant American who is culturally ignorant and makes all kinds of cultural mistakes, or you are an egg...a wannabe Asian. How about this...some Americans love to experience other people's culture, and they are aware that there are things expected in that culture, such as in Korea, if invited to somebody's home, that is a big deal and requires that you bring a gift befitting the occasion. If it is a big holiday, the present is more expensive. When I see a Chinese girl living here for many years and she acts no different than the Americans she hangs out with, I don't have any racist wannabe names for her. I just accept her for being her.

Good source of vitamin A. If you are ever stranded and have to catch fish to eat, you better be eating the fish eyes or you will suffer from severe malnutrition. Learned this on one of those, "I should not be alive," shows. The many was stranded in a life raft and started catching fish to eat but they said he was dieing of malnutrition because he was not eating the eyes, so he was not getting any vitamin A.

There's nothing wrong with admiring another culture. The video is just parodying those who "go the extra mile", trying too hard to be like another culture. I see it everyday, not just with white to asian (the egg), but with every culture. There's nothing wrong with mixing cultures either; It's not like I want to create a strict segregational, racially exclusive society. It's just that sometimes people desire and attempt to be a part of a culture they're not born in while simultaneously paying no respect to those who are. It's fine if you wanna be a part of another culture - just don't be overly obnoxious about it and parading yourself around like an ass. (like shown in the video) I mean just listen to the video from 3:44 to 4:10.

There are white people that like to do Chinese martial arts, drink tea, eat Chinese food, learn Chinese, etc, not because they wanted to be Chinese or Asian. It could have been their interest in learning new things, which is not a bad thing. Chinese martial arts help with your health like CO2 ( made the bones in your body stronger); it is a good health benefit. Drinking tea is another good health benefit, because tea helps with detox the body. Eating Chinese food sometimes can be very bad for the body because they used too much MSG and it's usually very oily( which is bad for your HDL, but it's a good experience to eat other countries cuisine ). Learning Chinese is not bad either if you are not Chinese or Asian, because sometimes those Chinese people in those Chinese restaurants can be very disrespectful by calling their customers certain disrespectful names in Chinese. In this case, knowing Chinese will help you confront them with their customer services or in any other cases you will know if some Chinese person talked bad about you in front of your face in their language. White people who learned new language ( Chinese ) and learned about other people's cultures are smart! It's a good knowledge and people need to keep learning, instead of stop learning.

So... what happens if you were born in china but are white? Are you still an egg even though your cultural background comes completely from China but your skin tone does not match that of natives there? Or, how about if you're black and born in Japan? Or, even crazier, Vietnamese and born in Germany? I liked this video, but it reminds me of the racist/stereotype perversion that is so prevalent in America. I still gave it a thumbs-up, but just some food for thought. According to this stereotype, I'm an egg even though my background includes Bratwurscht, Hamburgers, and Ճաշ. Just because I understand a foreign culture extremely well, or have lived there for a portion of my life, should I be condemned for it?

I'm mostly Japanese, but I do have Portuguese in me, and I gained more facial traits from my Portuguese side so nobody believes I'm Japanese straight off the bat slightly even though I do have Japanese features, its not noticed as much. So if I express any interest in my culture, like taking a course in Japanese and having my phone set to Japanese with the time set in Korean (that was because I had a friend in Korean camp and I missed her so I'd use that to look at the time where she was) people thought I was a wannabe Asian. Girl, don't let it get you down, because if you want to learn something, or a culture fascinates you, or you are genuinely interested in something, don't let other people stop you from doing something you want to do. Where I live it is extremely diverse, like I know two kids who aren't hapa (
