Considering that he has gone down in history as Ivan the Terrible, the first tsar of Russia could hardly have been a Boy Scout. As his name suggests, Ivan had an utterly terrifying presence during his thirty-seven-year-long reign.
Ivan's story is not only one of brutality, but it is also a tale of great suffering. It's the story of a little boy whose father died when he was just a toddler; a story of a child whose mother was poisoned when he was only seven years old. This was a boy who had to struggle to survive as the warring nobility threatened, molested, and harassed him endlessly while he tried to protect his only friend-his deaf and mute little brother.

When modern forensics studies Anastasia’s remains they found proof that she was in fact poisoned. I don’t think Ivan was paranoid, he saw people poisoned before his wife died. His mother was poisoned and died from it when he was young. He probably saw the same symptoms.

Joseph Stalin was the same as Ivan. When his beloved first wife died it changed him somewhat. He said all the love has been drained from him. Maybe it's a quite common phenomenon, I don't know as I'm incapable of love except for a fast car or motorcycle and maybe chocolate. LoL

Why "incapable," as if it's some sort of deficit? I don't believe in love as it's popularly described (like some big bird of prey ready to swoop down upon its hapless victim and make him or her -- or whatever -- besotted). I might CHOOSE to be loyal, devoted, dutiful, and committed. . . but "fall in love"? Save that schlock for the fairy tales.

Great and unusual topic. Thank-you. Subscribed. ivan suffered from a mental collapse of an undetermined cause. We can assume that the death of Anastasia was the major contributing factor in his rapid decline into an amoral and violent madness. Not surprising if we study his genetic line, the era, the environment and the violent lifestyle of his times. As to his wires' death, let's not forget the standard of medicine and the standard of diet in the Russia of the 1500s. It had to be a dangerous time in particular if you were a Boyar. 🙄

Why isn't Henry "the Horrible" VIII?
@FinnishLapphund
@FinnishLapphund 4 ай бұрын
The word Terrible have changed meaning through the ages, it used to mean Fearsome, Formidable. And I think that Ivan the IV's actual Russian moniker is Groznyi = Strong, Menacing, Impressive. Besides, his total number of wives is not the reason to why he's called Ivan the Terrible. The real reasons behind his moniker basically comes from that he defended Russia against the Muslim Khans, that he himself was unusually tall and strong for a man during that time period, that he eventually became somewhat of an intellectual who supported various sciences, and added to that mix, also came his fierce/unpredictable temper. Most kings/rulers with monikers that I've heard about, have in general received their moniker for something they did for/against a country which affected a lot of that country's citizens, a special physical appearance they had, or having a disposition which either positively or negatively affected their ability to rule. So maybe if Henry VIII besides having had 6 wives, had also done things like at 15 years old ordering one of his friends to be executed only due to a petty argument, and later in life killed his only both legitimate, and viable male heir in a fit of rage, together with doing some other negative stuff, then who knows, maybe he would've been known as Henry the Horrible in our history books.
