I also recently did a test pile where I broke all of the "rules" and did not set the pile up in layers. All of the materials were run through my shredder to break everything down to very small particles and were all blended in together. That ended up being my most successful compost pile. All of my other piles I always have to watch because they continuously run at 160 to 170 degrees. This blended pile ran at 140 degrees for two solid weeks before I turned it. Then I turned it two weeks later, and then two weeks later one final turn and it was finished. By allowing the compost to sit for two weeks between turnings the pile had a high fungi population, not just bacteria as most piles are.

PS. It's easier to water with every layer... especially the browns. It helps you control the moisture levels. When you water only at the end. the water often does not reach the center, or you go over-board and water too much.

I use 3 of those black compost bins. I made quite a few batches this year. I kind of lost track. They are a little on the small side but I seem to have better control. I had extra leaves ,so I tried straight leaf compost and it turned out wonderfully. The 2 batches are hanging out and aging until spring.

hey matt! i found dr ingham a few days ago and her insight inspired me to go out to the forest park nearby collecting inoculant samples. I just grabbed a pinch of everything i could find that i thought might have high density of microbes on it. Lots of moss growing on all different surfaces, soil, tree bark with the green/algae-ish stuff on it, tree sap both wet and dried, and a few other things like various berries i found or foliage that looked interesting. Then i came home, sprinkled it over my pile, misted and mixed it in and turned my pile. fun stuff! my pile isnt great though just a small (100-150 gallons) backyard experiment; my first pile ever, not really knowing what im doing haha. No heat that i've noticed and like 60-70% of it is dirt i think haha, rest kitchen scraps and green grass/weeds. Things are breaking down though! and turning it is fun! Just hoping the inoculants have enough time to saturate the pile cuz this is also my first time trying to grow anything and everything is kind of rushed, seedlings are overcrowded and long overdue for separating and transplanting. Ordered a yard of soil coming tomorrow that i plan on filling like 200 1-gallon nursery bags for all my seedlings, and mixing a bit of my compost in each one, so my pile wont really have much time to cook i guess, oh well, best i can do for now. any tips to help things along? should i try to wait longer before dismantling my pile & mixing it in my bags? or just get it in there immediately before putting any seedlings in?

The green material retaining its properties when dried and brown is the same as what happens when we dry our herbs. We lock in (no lose) the properties. I have noticed, however, that using dried materials in a new pile works a lot better if you super wet them so they will rehydrate. Otherwise, your pile may start like an old, beat up pickup truck in the middle of winter!

QUESTION: I hear that legumes can be used in place of manure due to their party starting levels of nitrogen. If so, do you use the beans and peas? The plant? Both? I am growing green beans and peas (well, planting the peas asap) on a trellis near my composting area in preparation for using it in place of manure, since I do not have a good source available at this time. Also, if it works the same, it is good to know you can produce all your own ingredients for compost from seeds, with no need of animals. Of course, it will be nice to have some chickens, ducks, sheep, etc. LOL All in good time...

Hey Matt! I made my first 4x4x4 compost pile using 2:1 carbon nitrogen, no manure. I actually used young leaf mold, barley straw, grass clippings and a lot of weeds. The pile was so hot I had to turn it every day and it would still reach over 70C within 18 hours after turning. Turned six times. I saw a lot of Actinomyces in between turns which I was not wanting. If I age this compost, will it revert to fugal dominant? Or is Actinobacteria dominance a forever thing?

Matt - I have 4 questions: 1) why is the primary purpose of adding the manure? Is it as a source of nitrogen? 2) What can I use as an alternative to manure? I'm asking because I don't have a good source of manure and I can't be certain that the cows haven't been receiving antibiotics or hormones, so I'm skittish about using manure. 3) what are your thoughts about using uncontaminated shredded paper and/or cardboard? 4) for my green, can I use the weeds I cut from my backyard?
@ThePermacultureStudent
@ThePermacultureStudent 5 жыл бұрын
There are some plants that are prone to decomposition and are high in nitrogen like legumes, comfrey, nettles, etc. BUT we all create humanure that is incredibly high in nitrogen, so the future is going to include that more and more as folks get more comfortable and the process becomes more streamlined and easier to test. The paper and cardboard will be carbon/brown while the weeds will be green: you still will need a catalyst which is what the Nitrogen is in the reaction.

Chicken manure is very high nitrogen not a lot of air holding capacity so to counter that I would add smaller browns like leaves and dried grass clippings, cardboard, etc. either shredded or run over a few times with a lawnmower. Did you start with saturating with water until runoff as shown in this video? What's the size of your pile? Is it covered? With any luck you will heat it up properly and turn the rats into compost if they stick around! David the Good would be proud!

I see that as something like a trademarked process by Elaine - I embrace her modalities, principles, and teachings as they are verified and overlap with the greater research and published insights currently available - I was taught 1:1 privately by Elaine over the course of several years so I'm not part of her certification programs. Instead of teaching a step by step strict recipe of creation, I cover all the forms of compost and biofertilizer (microbes) production because there's a TON of methods, a multitude of different perspectives on soil microbe testing from many successful and insightful teachers, etc. Elaine is a great independent teacher, but I also like to work with university scientists that have access to different equipment (some of these microscopes no one outside of a university an use), different educational focuses (she's not a mycologist and not a REDOX expert, both critical to understanding the whole picture), and so their results are different and together they provide deeper insight than either alone could give. I value ALL the methods but I value the principles and science behind them EVEN MORE - that way MY STUDENTS can create their own "bio complete" compost as per their context, climate, plants, and goals with full understanding rather than just following directions. I want them to know the WHY and HOW behind it all.

Just stop and take a moment to recognize that the crazy amish superstition that a pitch forks make better compost, is now scientifically justifiably accurate due to heavier oxidation with packing the pile with pitch forks vs shovels. Crazy!

Hm... aeration = oxidation. Fermentation is the other pathway of decomposition. Anaerobic decomposition is more reduced than oxidized; that's why Elaine is doing static piles now. Check out my new book for more clarity on Redox in composting, soil, plants, and more: www.thepermaculturestudent.com/shop/regenerative-soil-science-amp-solutions-manual-pre-order
