Mark repairs a 1979 vintage guitar effects unit, which features a super rare Bucket Brigade Delay chip - the Reticon SAD1024. It doesn't go well, and did Mark get scammed???? FAKE component alert!

That’s why I loved fault finding as nothing quite replaces that buzz you get when you switch something on after a repair and it works ! It takes a certain type of person to be a technician. It’s addictive lol. The more complicated the repair the bigger the buzz. At nearly 70 I can’t do delicate work anymore due to trembling hands and it’s so annoying, but I still have all the test gear !

@peterhyams6824 Just a thaught....... you could consider teaching a youngster who wants to learn, and he/she could be your hands? Im sure you could still get work if thats your profession, as mentoring someone is as though you continue your work through someone else, and eventually you could hand over your business to that person who would continue to provide help to your community 🙂 ?......

The fake chip has marks on top showing the original top surface was ground off. The half moon indicating pin 1 is also shallower than normal. Amazing effort rolling wire to make flat pins!

Not as consistent but an iron strip and a hammer will also do the trick. But Mark's way is more elegant and professional.

@@tim0steele I'd have just made them longer and soldered them into a vero board, them solder the pcb on the other side of the legs, and snip off the legs to the right length. But to each their own of course. Mark's skills are top notch.

I used to work in a small music store in the 90s, and I had to deal with very similar repairs as this one. To be honest, I would have just hard wired the different chip with jump leads. Crude, but effective. I like your way better.

Man I did not predict that a home made circuit board would be part of the fix! That’s truly next level stuff! I’m sure you have no shortage of things to work on but the guitar community are predicting a huge drop off in the number of people capable of repairing tube amplifiers in the next few years. Would you consider making some content tackling common issues associated with guitar tube amps?
