Hi friends,
For the last 2 years I’ve been using the Elektron Digitone & Digitakt combo nearly exclusively to write, arrange, record and perform my music on. Time to look back on this experience and all the pros, cons, future wishes and of course a glimpse at the Syntakt. Let me know your thoughts on this combo in the comments.
Have a brilliant day,
Miles

Great video, Miles! I totally agree with all of this. Especially the point regarding audio routing through the Digitakt, that compressor is one of my favorite features. I like that you talked about the practicality/limitations of the two machines together with the cons, too - I’ve run into the same issues with fills & muting as well.

Totally agree with the chord/melody progression limitation, I work around it by live recording and chaining patterns together, it get's challenging when playing back trying to figure out where your note is landing within the entire chain sequence of your creation, but it works. Thanks for this video, I've learned a lot from you Miles!

What I love about the Digitakt is it's amazing sampling capability. You can sample anything, pitch, chop and reverse, it's super fun. My setup is more stationary than portable, with that I have a lot of external instruments that connect back to my core mixer. From there I have an aux send that goes into the DN's IN, and the DN's OUT goes into the DT's IN, enabling me to send any instrument to sample (or route through all DN and DT's effects!) without having to mess with the physical connections. The only caveat is gain staging but once that's settled it's a pretty nifty incorporation.
@MilesKvndra
@MilesKvndra 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah agree! For that form factor the sampling capabilities are great - I just resampled some melodic stuff from the DN into the DT and it works so smoothly. Your setup sounds really dope, being able to sample everything into the DT is a big plus. And if you are using mono synths/instruments you don't even need to sacrifice the stereo field. But even with that I find that you can bring it back nicely using panning + the DT's reverb and delay. :)

This is my favorite combo as well, because it’s soooo fast! From being able to mute the channels from one device, to control-all, to sound locks, I can get a jam going from an initialized state within seconds! I route my audio to have an analog bass synth going into the Digitone inputs and the Digitone going into the Digitakt for the compressor. I recently configured a Launch Control XL with a custom template to for more immediate access to levels and certain parameters (that was the only annoying part as it’s USB only and not a host) so it either has to go through my computer or Retrokits RK-005. The thing I want most is a mod/velocity/bc/aftertouch matrix on the Digitakt like the Digtone. That would truly make it the ultimate sampler :) I haven’t gotten to vibe with the Syntakt that much because something about the hybrid nature of the machines feels unpolished. Sound locks show an ‘!’ when you can’t use them and it just feels clunkier than the Digitakt or Digitone. Also, the FX track selection behaves differently than the normal track selection and often find myself struggling to figure out why I’m not seeing my track parameters.
@MilesKvndra
@MilesKvndra 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for sharing Nathaniel! Since I have the Mother-32 I'm basically using a similar routing as you are using - routing audio in the Digitone is great because you have 3 different FX that you can use on the source. :) And regarding Syntakt: I haven't tried it yet but most people I talked to are amazed by it. Especially due to the FX track - this looks like something really cool and I would like to try that. But I can understand you saying that it behaves differently - makes operation a little harder especially when coming from the other machines.

Hi Miles, thanks for the great video. I totally agree with you. I've had both Elektrons in my studio for well over a year and really like them both. However, the Digitakt and Digitone are tied into a larger hardware setup at my studio that is controlled by my Squarp Pyramid MK2. This works totally well and is great in timing (and via Program Changes from the Pyramid, the Elektrons suddenly have a song mode... but it's a bit tricky). The Digitakt often takes over the drums / percussion part. But I also really like its synthesizer capabilities (when using single cycle waveforms). The combo is altogether already very powerful and fat sound. I have already considered whether the Syntakt would fit into my setup, but have come to the conclusion that I would then have too much redundancy in the setup, which would be a hindrance. Many drum sounds that I have heard so far from the Syntakt, I also get in the Digitakt with some sampling and sound design (ok, for this you have to master the Digitakt certainly already something...). The other parts in the Syntakt are either based on the model Cycles (hello, Digitone) or analog (which I also have here already standing around...). So there would be something over there for me. So I think the Syntakt would be perfect for a small, not so big setup. In a combo together with Digitakt and Digitone would be me from the sound but too much overlap present, so I would always have to decide which device I should use for what. The focus would suffer for me. Viele Grüße von der Nordseeküste! 😊
@MilesKvndra
@MilesKvndra 2 жыл бұрын
Hey man, thanks for sharing the setup and also the interesting thoughts on the Syntakt - I've literally had the same thoughts. I really wanted an analog synth to add to that combo but wasn't sure about the Syntakt. So now I went for something completely different with the Mother-32 and I have the feeling that it is another big creativity booster. Oh und natürlich liebe Grüße zurück aus Köln an die schöne Nordsee! 🙌🏻🙂

Great video. The only benefit of adding a Syntak would be for the drum machine alone, that would free up the sampler to be used in different ways I'd think. One dedicated machine to program all your drums, the other one for sample slicing/etc, and the synth for effects, with the added bonus to connect a keyboard for live sound leads if needed. Keep cookin' 👌

After years of making ambient/noise with modular hardware and software, I started making techno. I've started using bitwig, but it's giving me decision fatigue. I wanted a streamlined work flow and got a used DT. I love the sequencer and the sound design is enough, but 8 tracks and purely sample based sound design is tough, especially since it doesn't do multi sampling. A midi-CV device to control the modular would help, but I still need more tracks. I'm pretty well convinced that the Syntakt is the next step, but I feel lazy bc I have a perfectly good Novation Supernova collecting dust, it's just a pain to program from the DT. I guess I have more money than sense :)
@MilesKvndra
@MilesKvndra 2 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a great journey George! And I think on the DT standalone you can create a lot of great stuff - I have to admit I'm using it way to little for sounddesign and just for sampling. But yeah, I think DT + ST would be a great combo!

This might not help for the types of transitions you're looking to do, but just in case you weren't aware you can latch the fill for one loop by hitting YES + PAGE. If you release PAGE before YES it will hold the latch until you hit PAGE again. Might be enough to free up a hand for one of those filter sweeps.
@MilesKvndra

Hey, that's a very good tip! I tried this workaround couple of times but it somehow didn't click for me - I think the most problematic part is that my max pattern length are all different depending of the jams (sometimes 64, 128 or even 256). This makes it hard for me to plan the transition in advance in my existing jams (for new jams it would be doable I guess). But good point to mention! :)
@out_of_band
@out_of_band 2 жыл бұрын
@@MilesKvndra Ah yeah, having the different pattern lengths running would definitely make that harder! If I do use this, it’s typically to fully latch the pattern for a bit, and not so often for one loop.

I had a go on the Digitone keys and found it incredibly freeing and amazing - but it’s quite big and heavy and quite an investment. Nice video ….I just bought the 2 of them really nice machine and now with the os update that’s a really good combo can I ask you a question concerning overbridge ? Do you sometimes use it for recording your audio ? If yes do you need to get the audio to your mixer or you can use the usb cable to manage the audio and midi directly with overbridge and get the audio out on the master audio card used with your computer ?

Thank you! I meanwhile switched to a hybrid setup and use the two machines solely via Overbridge. Big advantage is that you can indeed transmission MIDI and audio just via USB. Hi, Miles! Yes, it would be great to press just one “fill” button and have one free hand to do something else. Also, I really miss bell/notch type of filter on the Digitone. I use one quite a lot on the Digitakt, it helps to mix and glue things together. And, yes, midi arp would be nice to have as well 👍🏻. Syntakt is very interesting device but I’m not sure if I have enough focus to rule them all. Cause having DT+DN with it’s 12 track is already overkill for me. And one question. Did you ever use overbridge recording your music to daw or you record in stereo? I found overbridge useless. I usually mix tracks same time I create sequences, right from the start and using all effects. That’s how I grope for my sound. Using overbridge for multitrack recording kills that particular sounding that I really feel and like. What do you think about it?
@MilesKvndra
@MilesKvndra 2 жыл бұрын
Cheers Anton and very good point on the filter! Regarding your question: I've been recording my jams via the stereo outs for the reason you mentioned but recently (due to a co-op project in Ableton) using Overbridge more and more. And I have to say I really like the flexibility it adds. I have set up my send FX in Ableton in a way to mirror the Digitone's/Digitakt's FX so I can apply them to the tracks. And I just love that I can now further process all the tracks individually - that's a big plus. I think it both has advantages - I can think of using Overbridge more for studio track recordings and the stereo out/DAWless part for live performances.
@anton.che.musica
@anton.che.musica 2 жыл бұрын
@@MilesKvndra yeah, I’ve tried to do the same, but ended up with the question - what’s the point of doing sequences on the Elektron device and mix em somewhere else outside? It’s more convenient to use Ableton, it’s internal tons of instruments and Push for example. I have had Push 2 and it’s good for sound design as well, you nearly touch the mouse/trackpad
@MilesKvndra
@MilesKvndra 2 жыл бұрын
@@anton.che.musica good question. I think for me it's that I like the workflow on the Elektron devices to create ideas but I have the feeling that with the stereo out I will not get a real studio mix that I'd be 100% happy with. I also have a Push2 but haven't used it for some time, maybe I need to give it another go try that I'm getting more into using Ableton again

The Syntakt features many machines and additional, analogue ones. But it has 12 tracks in all. The Digitakt had 8 sound tracks and in addition 8 dedicated midi tracks, which opens a lot of possibilities. In opposite to the Model:Samples the Digitakt can distinct between a start of a sample and looping a second part of it. I'm currently thinking of buying a digitakt and use it more like a synth with basic waveforms or with samples of instruments I love, like the duduk or chellos. Using the other 8 tracks for my Model:Cycles. I would be interested, if these two would work as good together, as your combo. Before spending more money I will see, how far I come with just the Model:Cycles. 6 tracks is very limiting, but because of the trig locks one could possibly put open and closed HH on the same track etc. Well, I'll see... I like the directness of the Model:Cycles very much.

Yeah I can see that. I like the sequencers but the patterns could really be longer - that's I think the biggest limitation for me. I just started to experiment a little bit with Ableton and sending MIDI from there to the Digitone and Digitakt - that opens some great new possibilities and is a lot of fun to try out. What sequencer are you using?

@@MilesKvndra I just got a Squarp Pyramid. Also tried other devices, even Grooveboxes with Midi-Sequencing Capabilities just because I hoped, they would be closer to what a Digitakt/Digitone/Syntakt could do, just with the more flexible sequencing - but those, again, in many cases seemed to limited in the end, compared what the Elektrons already could do, even if it's only at 4 bars length. I think the Pyramid might be the best option I stumbled upon so far, when going DAW-less. It can get a bit fiddly sometimes with it's small screen and limited knobs and buttons, but the amount of control is still there. Also I'm thinking about giving the new Hapax a try. Still your Ableton + Elektron Option is something I'm currently also thinking about. There's only so much trouble I'm ready to take and compromises I'm willing to make before I'm ready to sacrifice my DAW-less option for your setup + the Push 2 :D I can let you know how my tryouts work out in the end, also I'm curious with what you'll finally stick

@@MilesKvndra So, how is your current setup for sequencing the Elektrons via Ableton - I guess you'll be using Overbridge for recording the individual audio tracks. Then, do you have seperate Midi tracks for each individual Digitakt track? And how do you automate or p-lock? Does all the automation/locking need to be happening on the Digitakt-Track or can you do it directly on the according midi tracks? Do you combine it with Push? What's the most immedate / Elektron like workflow you came up with so far?

I'm honestly skeptical about the supposed holy trinity. Of course, Elektron would want to market them that way (gotta catch them all!), but I think it would lead to cognitive overload and having to manage three devices at the same time. At the very minimum, you'd have to accept Fill on no more than two at the time, etc. I can see why you'd be attracted to the idea though, and if Elektron were to send you a free Syntakt, I'd look forward to seeing you jam on all three. 🧡
@MilesKvndra

Hey David, yeah that is exactly my thought: adding 12 additional tracks could also be a little overkill and kill creativity. The FILL mode limitation is a very good point too, never thought of that - three hands are needed. But cheers for the kind words, wouldn't say no to trying out the Syntakt as well. 💚

Hi. My digitone does not start playing when I press play on the digitakt even though my set up is like yours. Thinking this might have to do with that I have not been able to update it, but i could with the digitakt without problems. Does anyone else have issues updating the digitone? For me it does not even get recognized by the computer using Transfer, it is very frustrating and Elektron themselves have not been helpful in solving this problem. Hey Les Volga, Unfortunately I haven't found a way to switch projects without the audio cutting off and working seamlessly. Yeah, it's weird. On the Digitakt you can choose a track as sidechain source, but that also gets compressed, which is not what I want from sidechain compression. I've been doing exactly this but it requires overbridge: set the kick track as sidechain source, then remove that track from the main outs, then in a DAW, put the main outs and the kick track in two separate channels. You'll be hearing the untouched kick track, and the sidechain compressed main outs. It's a great solution, but it would be even better if you could do it on just the Digitakt alone.
