thinking about it now, it's actually genius to make the doctor's first interaction to be with a kid because when you have a character being so good to a kid it's the easiest thing to love

Whenever there's a regeneration, I'm always waiting for the moment where I can say: Yup. That's him. That's The Doctor. In this it was. "Of course not. Box falls out of sky, Man falls out of box. Man eats fish custard. And look at you. Just sitting there. So you know what I think? That must be one heck of a scary crack in your wall." He remembered. All that nonsense with the food and the body change and everything else, and he still remembered that this little girl was afraid of a crack in her wall. He's still The Doctor.

Matt gave a lot of infectious energy to the role, even more than Tennant who to this day will always be hard to top. I was sad when Tennant left but immediately loved this introduction to the 11 doctor. This is one of the best season premieres in the shows history in my opinion. I once worked with a woman who was a vegetarian, in a kitchen. We both absolutely loved doctor who and one day we had an order of fish fingers cancelled just after we'd cooked them. I looked at her and said "Do you want to try them with custard?" We both laughed and did indeed try them with custard. Surprisingly not that terrible!

This show is actually what made Matt Smith famous, which is definitely a great reputation. Really hope he returns for the 60th anniversary specials, but I guess we'll have to wait another two months to see. Like I said for End of Time, I did consider not watching the show anymore after David Tennant left, but when I watched this episode, specifically the scene of him trying food, he won me over. Also, fun fact, Matt Smith is actually to date the youngest (adult) actor to play the Doctor, having been in his later 20s when he got the role. You'll see throughout his era that that actually works well for him. I swear, sometimes he plays a 10 year old better than actual 10 year olds on this show. You're in for a treat, Jay.

The delivery by Matt is what really sells it too. You see him most of the episode being quite silly and fun, very typical Doctor. And then that line. Along with the buildup and music. As a fan since classic Who (Four and Five being my firsts in PBS reruns), I think still one of if not the strongest introductions to a new Doctor yet.

New Doctor, new companions, _and_ a new showrunner, Steven Moffat. You know, the guy who created the Weeping Angels and River Song. And the Curse of Fatal Death, which you should look at someday. It was a 1999 'Comic Relief' Doctor Who comedy which shows you just how fond Moffat has always been of wibbly-wobbly-timey-wimey stuff, even when it's just being silly.

We all change…and that’s good as long as you remember who you are. Matt Smith took the Doctor to a different level. Where chaos & regret lived side by side in a constant battle. He was the 9th doctor I’d watched & became the best, others had qualities but this guy was the complete package, the stars really did line up, stories, runner, composer, companions, everything 😢 so much to enjoy and cry at. Enjoy

Matt Smith was The Doctor that I grew up watching. My first episode was a David Tennant episode on live tv. But when I started watching it weekly as it aired, the newest episode WAS this episode and had only come out 2 days prior. The 11th's theme song "Next Stop Anywhere" is so good. I've always really liked music, so this is always one always sticks out in my head any gets me hyped whenever I hear it.

I'm not certain, but I'm pretty sure the scene when the Doctor tries and rejects all those foods is a reference to Tigger in Winnie the Pooh who, when he comes to the 100 acre wood declares that Tiggers like everything, except it turns he doesn't like anything (except Roo's strengthening medicine, he doesn't try fishfingers and custard). And this doctor, you will find, is very tiggerish.

This is the episode I fall back to whenever I'm having a really bad day ... or a really good day .... or really just need a good pick me up. Amy and Rory are by far my favorite companions of all the series. It was really hard to see them go and I haven't seen characters that I connect with nearly as much snce. Matt Smith being such a child, meeting a child, doing everything possible to appease her AND get to know himself through her eyes while he finishes regenerating is a cross between PURE GENIUS and absolute beauty. Their entire story arc and character development are just breathtaking. They take such sharp turns with these characters, it will make your head spin and your heart ache.... and the cool part is, they weave the two doctors' stories (starting at the library) throughout time. Without spoilers, you're about to see: Doc wearing a cowboy hat Astronauts "Don't blink!" They didn't have a word for "pond" only "river" Richard Nixon Dinosaurs in space Doc's stuff in museums "This is a kindness" Roman soldiers "The biggest fashion crime since lederhosen"

Notable and you can likely find stories about it on here, when Matt Smith was selected, there was quite a hew and cry about how he would destroy Doctor Who as he was young and hip, and would change the show. An episode that remains exciting, even when you know it from repeat viewing and there are excellent actors even in the minor roles. At the end of the Episode Matt Smith is his own Doctor and Karen Gillan is a brilliant foil for him, showing that you can establish characters and make the audience care about them through excellent writing and acting in just one hour, something other shows often fail to manage, throughout an entire season.

Fun story - waaaaayyyyy back when this was new, I had a friend with a pair of tween-aged daughters who I successfully indoctrinated into the cult. I'd go round to their place to watch the big event episodes and we'd have all kinds of fun. They experienced the Doctor/Donna live and freakin' ADORED David Tennant - as one would. They'd seen Eccleston regenerate into Tennant but didn't really blink at that because Eccleston wasn't around for long and, as I said, they ADORED Tennant. Tennant's last episode was an epically emotional experience for us all - buckets of tears, much wailing! It was AWESOME, but I was able to go home and leave my friend to cope with his emotionally scarred daughters. LOL! Three days later I got a phone call from my friend, "So why did David Tennant leave?? You have to give me something to tell them, they've been crying for three days! It's like they had a favorite toy and someone smashed it and gave it back to them." At this point Matt Smith's debut was four months away so all I could do was tell him to chill out and hold the fort until then and either they'd sign onto the new guy or go off the show entirely and watch something else. I didn't get round to their place for "Eleventh Hour" but my friend called me the next day to report how Matt Smith was received. When they started watching, they were dubious about the idea of the show without Tennant, but ten minutes into the episode during a pause the girls were asked if they were down to continue and they both instantly said, "Yeah, we're good." 🤣 A few weeks later while watching Matt's latest episode one of the girls asked their dad, "So what's.... 🤔 ....what's Michael Tennant doing now?" My friend gave them SO much shit about how much they'd been prostrate with grief only a few months before and now they couldn't even remember David Tennant's name. Fame is fickle. 🤗

There are two nice minisodes going with Series 5, called Meanwhile in the TARDIS 1 and 2. The first one is should be watched between this episode and the next and the second one immediately after episode 5.

You loved 10 but you are going to love 11! For me, I liked 10 best as the Doctor, but 11's STORIES are better. All of that said, I still think 12 is my favorite once we get past his first season. MUCH to look forward too!

Hands down the greatest run of Who kicked off by the best season. This season is a perfect blend of older Who(made for a British audience) and parts of new Who(Made for a global audience) The true shift into global Doctor Who is season 6.
