This episode is all about the Emergency Shelter that I personally carry with me on my adventures;
Day Hikes and Overnight Trips as well.

…………….
The Siltarp 1 from RAB is a light-weight 1 person shelter for fast-and-light adventures and for hasty emergency situations. It's made of ultralight Sil-Coat™ Cordura® fabric, which is fully waterproof and strong.
The Siltarp can be set up using anything from trekking poles to trees.
Stuff sack is included.
……………
With any adventure that I go on, I generally carry with me an Emergency Shelter which can serve multiple purposes. What you see above is the Integral Designs SilTarp 1 which is a 30D silicone-impregnated Cordura ripstop nylon tarp that measures 87 x 60 in.
The packed Size is 6 x 3 in and it weighs 7 oz.
With my setup, I have attached 9ft lines to each of the corners and have put 4 tent stakes into the stuff sack which has brought the weight of the system up to 10oz.
Purposes :
Day Hikes : Offers protection from quickly approaching storms or if you get stuck out on the trail over night, etc.
Overnight Adventures : Protection from storms while hiking, protection from the sun at camp and so on.
By the way, Integral Designs was purchased by Rab years ago and if you are interested in this tarp, it is now known as the Rab Siltarp1 Shelter
Tarps make for excellent emergency shelters as they are quick to construct in an emergency situation with A-frame, Lean-to, etc.
Hiking can be some of the most enjoyable adventures, but you must always be prepared for the worst-case-scenario. Emergency shelters are not a luxurious hotel, but it gets the job done and keeps you safe from the weather.
………..
Question :
What emergency shelter do you carry with you? Do you even carry one?
..

I use a sewing machine & make all my own tarps. You can buy all the same material that these tarp companies use. I get it by the yard & custom make my own to what ever size I need. I can add loops, D-rings, Velcro, etc wherever I need it to be.It's MUCH cheaper to make your own.

I am making my next tarp myself as well. I came up with a decent design, using the strongest lightest material I can find. In theory, I can shave a full pound off my weight, and actually have a bigger tarp.

I would recommend to everyone to learn how to construct a continuous ridge line for your tarp. Setup is super fast and you only need about 30' of light cordage. It takes the stress off the tarp too. For long day hikes I carry an inexpensive but light nylon 10x10 tarp, guy lines and stakes. An ultralight bivy sack (SOL emergency bivy), an ultralight air mattress and air pillow. In the cold I keep a spare set of synthetic long johns to sleep in. All packed in a trash compactor bag. I always have some Reflectix for a sit pad or extra insulation, a drum liner for a ground cover, a small fire kit, a cheap rain poncho and a knife. In winter I'll add an extra outer insulation layer like a puffy or fleece. Always snacks, a mini water filter, a boo-boo kit and a headlamp.

I like your list, oldpackmule & I love this channel.. Can you pls tell me about continuous ridge line for tarp? I assume its just what you said,, a line from tree to tree that you lay your tarp over?? I'm a retired [not by choice, by drs choice] builder from east coast living in az now,, I can build anything out of wood, BUT when it comes to autos and survival in the cold,, I admit,, I'm lost..lol

Nice video Luke, I would like to see more survival/emergency/bushcraft videos like this... scenarios of what to do in a real emergency situations. Or a simulation of grabbing a bag-out bug and running into the forest to try to survive an overnight with what you have or whatever, can be really cool. I personally carry just a regular cheap tarp 3x3m from some Chinese company, got to use it couple of times in emergency and just when needed for whatever reason. Plus I always carry a space blanket, does not take much space or weight but good to have laying around in the car or in the backpack.

During my hitchhiking adventures across the US, my go-to was always the 11X9 Walmart tarp. Cheaper than any other tarp out there, making it easily replaceable for when I destroyed it! That, combined with six stakes and some cheap cord was all I ever needed to make a solid shelter for a night, and it was lighter and simpler than carrying around a tent to set up/break down every day. The key here is the lack of money required to get/replace one. Eventually I'm saving up for a Warbonnet Superfly tarp as a more permanent solution for quick shelter. Overkill in many people's opinions, but I always need room for gear and my dog, even in an emergency!

I keep two shelters with me when I go out hiking, camping, or just in my vehicle. A quick tarp shelter and my tent. I’m a veteran and a outdoor nut so I like to be prepared wherever I go. My pack is normally set up to sustain me for about 7 days in an emergency. I also live in the northern part of the US so getting stranded in the snow does happen on occasion.

I learned at around aged 11 that I have to have a warm blanket with me while I travel at all times. Living in Northern Canada, winter time, in December, I was put on a greyhound bus, to go visit my Grandma in Grande Prairie AB. I was leaving Whitehorse Yukon. And around 8 hours after the trip started. The bus breaks down. And they had to send a rescue bus, from Whitehorse, to continue our journey. But it was -20 C outside, and they sent a school bus from Watson Lake to take us back to Watson Lake, because we were in the middle of nowhere, and would have frozen to death. It was a deadly situation. Well, as we all know. School busses are not the warmest vehicles around. I did not have a blanket, and was pretty much frozen solid. Never again, was I caught travelling without enough blankets for everyone in my vehicles. And they have to be warm blankets as well.

One mod i've done this year to my silnylon hex tarp is to add a loop of shock cord to each tie-out and connect the guyline to it. That way as the tarp slacks out it stays relative taut and doesn't over stretch in most windy conditions. Sadly didn't get to test it out yet in all weather conditions, cracked ribs amongst other issues prevented me from getting out for most of the warm season. Edit: also switched to using a full ridgeline for my tarp instead of attaching from the tie-outs to the tree or other structure. Using a prusik (3 or 4 loops per makes for a great stopper) for each end with and s-biner i can quickly dialing in the hang and adjust as needed.

Looks like a good tarp. I hike with a military poncho, with tie offs placed in the grommets, in a small bag where I also have some y stakes and a ridge line. I also throw a space blanket in the pouch. Rugged, versatile, familiar. I like that it not only can be fashioned into several shelter configurations quickly, but also makes good impromptu wet weather gear.

Personally as emergency shelter i carry a "bothy bag". If you are injured they are much easier to set up. In fact there is no setting up. I would not see myself mounting a tarp with a broken leg. The other advantage of a bothy bag is that it does not need any anchor points. So no trees, no problem. And finally you are better protected. Even if a tarp can be set in way to give you a complete protection, it is a bit more technical. Hope to see a review in the near future of such product on your channel. Another interesting product that nobody has done a review about yet on youtube is the "heat reflective tarpaulin" from a British brand called "surviva wear". Just an idea for a future review 😉. Keep up the good work and thanks for your advices.

I carry a small one (could be 2 but it's tigjt) person home built emergency shelter in my kit. It basically is a 10'x10' blue poly tarp that I modified with numerous tie-out grommets (4 on each side) plus a central tie point for overhead tying if needed. With this, i also have 5 lengths of 550 para cord and 6 stakes like you use. If I need more, I'll use twigs. For poles, I have 2 3 foot extendable aluminum poles (again, if I need more, I can cut them). I keep it roled up in the bottom of my pack and can be set up quickly in numerous configs. I also keep a tactical flashlight and a 'fire kit' rolled up with it. It's wrapped tightly in shrink wrap (except poles) and is clearly marked "emergency shelter". All together, it takes up about the same space as maybe a 1 quart billy can and weighs almost 1 pound. A bit heavy but when it comes to last minute needed survival, weight or size doesn't matter to me. My safety and the safety of my hiking companions comes before all else. As long as it works is how I see it. Here is a question: what do you (and viewers) carry in your vehicles for survival gear? I'm not talking "comfort", I'm talking bare bones necessary equipment? Thanks for another great video.

Great video Luke, greetings from Finland! I personally carry finnish military rain poncho as multi use/emergency shelter system, because it will protect you from elements, nuclear radiation, bullets, and acocalypse. Some say it will do your taxes and dishes too, but i may have a fluke as mine doesnt do that. Jokes aside emergency shelters are here pretty much a reguirement as the nature is harsh and unforgiving, especially during winter. Keep up the good work!

Luke, I carry a light day pack. In the pack I carry two tarps: an 8X10 dynema, a 5x7 Arcturus, line and stakes. There is a Mora knife, a stainless steel water bottle, a ss cup, a silky saw, three lighters and a fero rod, a flexible cutting board gives the pack rigidity. There’s also Off bug juice. It’s very light and just stays in the truck. If I get in trouble, I’ll be okay for a little while. Texas

I normally carry my 4' by 7' 70D nylon poncho tarp, a few packs of emergency blankets and a small roll of packing tape and paracord. Provides me with rain gear, a tough tarp to offer some protection and enough emergency blankets for what ever I may need, be it keeping me warm, dry or even collecting water. The tape can turn 3 or 4 cheap emergency blankets into almost any type of shelter you want and is great for repairing any holes that might be made by branches or sparks.

I’ve settled on a grommeted poncho as my minimalist shelter. About the same size as this tarp but a bit more versatile. I can have it out, on and be protected in seconds in the event of a pop-up shower and still pitch it as an A-frame for an unplanned overnight.

I have a few options. Mostly, I carry my 5x7 emergency blanket (the one with grommets). It's been used as a shelter, picnic blanket for lunch, ground cloth under a tent or tarp, improvised rain gear.... It does an awesome job of reflecting heat from a fire as well. With the shiny side up, it provides shade cooler than a regular tarp. Weighs a couple ounce more than your sil tarp. Not bad for under 25 bucks, and they last for years.

Thanks to Luke and family for your service! Happy belated Veterans Day! I am grateful. Usually carry a 12 foot tarp with doors (for the hammock and at 1.3 pounds not particularly light) At this stage I tend to carry a big full pack for the exercise but I don’t have a lightweight option. Was looking at the MLD flat tarp (5x7) though. It’s DCF and inexpensive based on what its made of.

Once upon a time when I was in the military, we were walking along in northern California on a mountain trail when at 2am the Captain yelled out to my company, Hault, then Rest and then Sleep? We were on a dirt road high on a ledge, going from mountain to mountain. All we had were our packs and our rifles and our steel pots. We had to stay in formation, so we just dropped down on the side of the dirt trail and waited for daylight. The temperature was about 38 degrees. So I worked with what I had. I sat on my steel pot and butt pack to keep the ground from making me colder. I took out my poncho which was unlined, tied off the top and began to wrap it all around me, and pulled my limbs together. I fell asleep. and the next morning while I was a bit cramped in the legs, got up and continued with the mission. Another time, at -17 I found an old shed to break the wind and wrapped a military blanket around me, and sat on my backpack. The shed had a step to the front door and I sat there with a single candle between my legs and the blanket surrounding the tiny flame Indian style. I fell asleep. My point being is there is an advantage to not bedding down and being ready to move if not to just stand up and exercise to shake off the cold. I have even walked all night inside a snorkel parka for 6 hours just to keep my body warmed up and last out the night until the sun came up. For me planning on laying down in the cold at 6'4 is not practical, I would rather stay alive and have all of my toes.

I used to carry a 7x5 tarp for an emergency shelter, but last year, switched to a Six Moon Designs Gatewood Cape. It sets up as a Teepee shelter with a trekking pole ( or ~45-49" stick, with tie outs so that it's a fully enclosed shelter. Of course it can also be setup as a tarp in various ways, but it's strength is as an enclosed shelter. It also doubles as a rain poncho. Love the thing.

Hi Luke. Greetings from the UK, & thanks for yet another great video. You have become my go-to, for unbiased "true" reviews over the years. I have been carrying that same tarp for the same reasons as yourself, for about 4 years now, used it a fair few times for different things, & slept under it a couple of times too (out of choice, not necessity), & found it a good strong product. It's not large though, as you will be aware, so if I were bigger(I'm 5'8"), I might have preferred the siltarp 2-still pretty light, especially in winter, however I have teamed it up with the Fjallraven poncho which I think you have reviewed in the past (managed to get a good deal!) , and I find that combination a good, light, flexible pair for my needs. keep up the good work!

Oh yeah, quick as opposed to emergency shelter because here where I live, our area competes with Seattle Washington as the rainiest city in the lower 48 so you can't really say, i didn't know a thunderstorm might come up outta nowhere! Lower Alabama really is a subtropical zone with jungle like conditions all the way from early spring till late fall and then oh my gosh thank goodness finally a few days of good cold camping weather here and there. Anyway I'm getting off track, stay sharp and stay dry!

I carry a tarp for picnics just for the sake of unpredicted weather. I can't count the times on my fingers that I "saved the day" with a simple tarp and rope. Every time everyone says "I need to start bringing that", every time they don't.

My personal go-to is an Aqua Quest 13x10 Safari tarp. I have the camo version. When folded right it can pack down into an older MOLLE 1qt. canteen pouch. I do too keep guylines as well as ridgeline (paracord) for quick setup. I like the bigger tarp because it is big enough (if setup properly) to create a floor under the A-frame.

Another good video, it is a good idea to have an emergency cover, even if you did have shelter this could be used to cover / protect you wood pile, or help out a buddy who forgot his shelter

Thanks for the awesome channel. Luckily in Iowa we don’t deal with too many mountains, but weather does play a factor here.

I use/ carry something akin to the Rab 4-6 person storm shelter. Packs to about the same size does not require any additional pegs or poles can be set up faster. I have used mine as a bike packing bivi. I would use a tarp for planned over night stops (I carry a poncho for the same reason).

I got my old Army hootchie/tarp. Same idea as this. But its my only and primary shelter. Its about 1 kg. Guy lines? Used to use bungee cords in the army. But I been using a few caribeners and shock cord. Buy it by the meter tie it on. Saves a bit of time while its pouring. Clip done up covered and dry. If I was to replace Id buy a DD hammocks tarp. Id go 4x4 meter one gives more optiond to make tents teepees etc. Snugpak also have a great light bivi bag. Its half packed size of Lukes Tarp. Light as. I keep that with my hootchie

I personally prefer a military grade poncho. I can wear it or use it for shelter. Ole Grouch Military Surplus designed one I really like. It is not on the cheap but worth the money. it will run around 70 to 80 dollars. I also carry (2) 55 gal drum liners (trash bags) 5 mil thickness to help with convection, conduction, or believe it or not ( a raised bed). Good looking tarp you have on hand. It does look well made. Thanks

I went all out 2 years ago for xmas on a tarp. My mom ended up getting me the Winter Dream from UGC. Not cheap, but I love it. Originally for my hammock but I carry it with my emergency kit now. I really like having doors with snaps. I like to be completely enclosed in case it gets bad. I also have my SOL escape bivvy and sometimes my UST emergency tarp with the mylar. I tend to go shelter heavy.

For colder weather, I seem to have switched to a "Fjellduk". A quite strong (and somewhat heavy) poncho/tarp combination with reflective foil on the inside. If it really blows you can put your whole sleeping bsg inside but the tarp itself is absolutely waterproof so you do need some way to get some draft through there or you'll be wet in a few hours. The upside of that is, if you really *are* wet you can pack yourself in something like that and stop the drying out of your clothes. Which is most of the reason you get so cold.

As far as I can see on KZfaq Luke is the best hands down and I don't know why KZfaq doesn't put him first and foremost upfront on their recommendations for outdoor gear reviews. For anyone considering a KZfaqr to support, I would definitely recommend ole lone Wolf Luke.

Way back, me and my brother was building farm worker huts on a ranch right beside the aircraft carrier training strip in South Texas. Talk about some sound. They'd run all day practicing landing on the deck of a aircraft carrier. Remarkably they'd stop for lunch time for an hour. People just don't know what goes into having a well trained military and it just burns me up to see these people who use their constitutional rights to disrespect our troops. Don't they realize there's wolves out there just waiting to come in here and devour them and there's only one thing standing between them and us?

My Gatewood Cape and stakes/lines weighs about a pound and compacts small. It's an ultralight sylnylon poncho that can also be pitched as a tent. It's a pretty great piece of gear, but does need seam sealing to be fully waterproofed. it's only available in green or grey, though.
