Arthur Schopenhauer was a German philosopher best known for his book, The World as Will and Representation, in which he claimed that our world is driven by a continually dissatisfied will, continually seeking satisfaction. Influenced by Eastern thought, he maintained that the "truth was recognized by the sages of India"; consequently, his solutions to suffering were similar to those of Vedantic and Buddhist thinkers; his faith in "transcendental ideality" led him to accept atheism and learn from Christian philosophy.
The text for this audio is from the book Essays of Schopenhauer, translated by Rudolph Dircks and published in 1897, and is in the public domain. I find Schopenhauer the greatest observer that has ever lived. I, myself, had a 180 degree turn in life, from optimist to realistic/pessimistic. My favorite book of all is words of wisdom. It was delightful to have come to some of the same conclusions that he had about life. I’ve been depressed for 3 and half years now, and back to contemplating suicide again. I have tears in my eyes right now, but at least I know I’m not fooling myself with superstitions. P.S.: I don’t know if I rather be where I’m at right now, or if I would be better of being ignorant. Life really is suffering.

I'm so deeply sorry for you. I have had such a happy life - but it was only my religious faith propping it up. Now that that's gone, my will to life has abdicated. Knowing that each and every moment was an illusion is more heartbreaking than I can say. Being born was a fucking mistake.

I would say that life is like a game. Though it is inexorable that limitation is its sole material, the player can, in my own supposition, allow themselves to engage in it. If existence in pragmatic totality is aseptic to the individual, it should not matter if the individual chooses to engage within the game, or derive perception of its putrescent recrudescence. My friend, for the sake of sparing innocents suffering, I would recommend to keep playing...

I would rather be free of all delusions than live in ignorance. Although, that requires staring directly at existence without any rose tinted glasses. Of course, this does not entail a happy life. At the very least, some solace can be found in the fact that you know exactly what is causing the perpetual suffering of life, compared to the melancholy feelings of someone that is living in ignorance.

Lostintime - I used to read Nietzsche under the assumption that he was right and thus Schopenhauer was obsolete. On a whim though, I decided to read Schopenhauer directly, from page 1 to the end... boy Nietzsche was so wrong. As Schopenhauer himself said, we get incalculable benefit from reading someone directly. Secondhand commentary is a necessary evil, and I couldn’t start most things without commentary. But this meme is wrong about Nietzsche “dunking” on Schopenhauer. The only true problem, which Bertrand Russell claimed and Schopenhauer himself admitted to: Schopenhauer was nothing like his own ideal Buddha’s & saints and other “deniers of the will.” But even here, Schopenhauer said many times that his personal life wasn’t admirable by his own standards. I think the real “problem” with Schopenhauer is that he is correct about things people wish he wasn’t: 1) the conventional worldly human idea of a “good life” is a dangerous illusion, and 2) the Buddhas and Jesuses of the world WERE in fact pessimists when it came to this worldly idea and WERE SPECIFICALLY advocating abandonment of most of the ‘precious’ belongings these worldly people value to gain full liberation. We see in this era, too, much revisionism and blind optimism about Buddha and Jesus: ‘Jesus was just saying to live by the golden rule, Buddha just said to be mindful and loving’, etc etc etc, conveniently ignoring all their teachings on abandonment and anti-hedonism.. a timeless tension

***** both Jedi and Sith would be positivists (with Schopenhauer being the pessimist/negativist). Even the Sith suffer from the "vanity of existence", and are narcissists, with a well-defined worldview which they seek to impose on others, build empires, etc. Good or Evil, they are still engaging with the world with no consideration for analyzing their engagement, their brief lifespans, etc.

Yes, Schopenhauer's philosophy advocates contemplation, compassion, moderation and humility, while Nietzsche advocates a will to power, to become an overman, disregard of universal moral values in order to create one's own, a distaste for "slave morality". Indeed, Schopenhauer was a Jedi Master, and Nietzsche was the student who turned to the dark side.

Consciousness would never had been a problem if we lived in a reality worth existing in. Regard it as life simply stopping for a moment and finally understanding what it is. First we tried to find something more than reality - some kind of spiritual answer that would transcend life. After that we tried to change nature with science only to find that this world, by its nature was fucked from the start. We've been trying to build a paradise on a foundation of garbage. If those animals out there could understand what we do, they would stop reproducing immediately out of sheer disgust. But, understanding and knowing this world, that revolting gift has fallen to us. Consciousness is not the problem - the ridiculous natural conditions it is placed under is.

With you on that Steve... " were different it would be the same; " This is a contradiction. If something is different, it is by definition not the same! I think what he might have been asserting is that you can't change reality because of its entropy, and you can't change life because it requires the use of breeding and eating because of that very entropy. The will, the thing itself, and being the consequence of the finite nature of the universe, can only perpetuate itself by means of what we have now. The individual is an emphatic assertion of that will. It is opposed to a state of equilibrium and needs constant help from without in order to exist. For the individual to have any hope of existing, and these needs met regarding the continual help from without, no one would be born or live without the will. Thus they are inseparable. It would be nice if it was different. However, I can't picture anything different that wouldn't destroy the concept of a conscious mind. It would be like a microprocessor with no clock. Simply single a state of being very much like a rock, or a sheet of paper. I don't think that if Steve doesn't stare like a bewildered ape at the stars that he is a fake pessimist.

what is empty to one may be full to another. but both are connected to the processes, which will exist regardless of interpretation. Therefore what is the point of interpreting that which cannot be transcended, because of its mechanical nature? The point is only in the person who thinks there is a point. But can the point be found outside the person? No, because man is the point for himself. He squares his own circle. But the circle does not need him to exist. His meaning is merely an attempt to superimpose another type of existence onto that which already exists. He rejects that which exists and thus would like something that corresponds to his yearning for explanation beyond appearance. The appearance to him is not enough. He needs explanation to replace the appearance.

I think it’s possible that the great philosophers are those who possess 2 traits. 1. They are clinically depressed, such that, regardless of life circumstances, they are pessimistic, bitter and generally incapable of happiness. 2. They are highly intelligent and articulate. This allows them to spread their inner demons to so many people. I’m not saying Schopenhauer is wrong, just that his suffering probably stems from a chemical imbalance or otherwise medical deficiency. Unfortunately, I tend to agree with his main points. Damn it!

And so why continue? (and this question is not being familiar with Schopenhauer's complete works). The obvious to many he states, but the answer to why one should keep going or to live out one's lifespan when all is futile, seems left unanswered. Why did he, personally, and obviously live to be such an old age and why did he bother to write anything down if all is meaningless? Also there are some things left out, like homosexuality (which in his time has no definition), or the satisfaction of a good, loving partnership shared with another in a life.

It is always dangerous to say out loud: our birth is a huge accident by bumbling humans doomed to be blown this way and that by winds of fate without a God caring anymore about humans then leaches , pigs or dung beetles . Any human that is NOT a misanthrope is not paying attention or not honest .

Emptiness is das truth because truth is empty. Empty of what ? Empty of its own individual existence because everything is interbeing and nothing is being. There is no such thing as The thing in itself Because everything has 2 sides like night and day, life and death, yin and Yang.

"Schopenhauer has quite a crude mind... where real depth starts, his comes to an end" - Ludwig Wittgenstein "Schopenhauer, by the way, is referenced twice in Mein Kampf" - James Harting, Stormfront forums. The guy obviously has many many issues.

+Earthling THX-1138-4EB So you discard Schopenhauer because Wittgenstein was unable to fully comprehend his philosophy, while also being associated with Nazism through Hitler? Schopenhauer stands on his merits, not others.
@BinaryBunyip

All Hail Sir Microcosm Doesnt matter if you believe Witt couldn't comprehend. Schoop's philosophy was used in a 'bad' way - but yet - he didn't expect that?! Whatever. His 'merits' are pathetic. Oh and he didn't die in an apparent, horrible suffering way. Died peacefully on a couch. So even his own philosophy didn't count on him. I know that's a bit low, because how can anyone know the suffering he endured on that couch, but you see what I mean? And how come, most of the people who have near death experiences always say it was 'bliss'? Yes yes, some say it was horrible - low number though - and I realise there's more variables to take in with that argument.

Earthling THX-1138-4EB You reminded me of Bertrand Russell's commentary on Schopenhauer. How Schopenhauer lived, or how other's used his philosophy, does not negate its validity. Wittgenstein was also a rather nasty person to be around. What does that say for his philosophy? Nothing. Now take your sophistry and sod off.
