For fans of the radio program "A Prairie Home Companion," recent news about Garrison Keillor marks the end of an historic run. This coming Saturday's broadcast from the Hollywood Bowl will be his last. Why is he leaving the show that he made into an institution? He talked that decision with Jane Pauley.

"A Prairie Home Companion", along with Garrison Keillor was truly a sanctuary of warmth situated in the cudgels of our hearts at a time when blatant, crass exploitation predominated the instruments of mass culture. It, and Mr. Keillor as the master of ceremony, will be truly missed.

Thank you, Garrison Keillor, for thanking a teacher, for recognizing the huge role she played. And, Jane Pauley--she only makes it look effortless. To secure a great interview like this, takes skill. Enormous empathy. They're both leaders in their field. Both, my generation, I am proud to say.

I can't believe that after this man has spent 40 years of his life being faithful to the PRARIE HOME COMPANION that the network he worked so long for would kick him to the curb as they have I remember the words of ajesus Christ " ... he who has not sinned let him cast the first stone ..." Terry, point well taken. MPR just threw Keillor away like a piece of yesterday's trash. And they owe him for a Prairie Home Companion because no doubt it fattened many an MPR executive's wallet. And this even though the charges of sexual misconduct have not been proven in a court of law. But even if they were, and Keillor is guilty, it does not warrant the way he's been treated.

I had listened to A Prairie 🏡 Companion since 1986. I was, and maybe still am, a peculiar immigrant. I took to this radio program like a duck to water. Later on, in the early 2000s I think, I read an article by the great Dave Barry(Miami Herald's regular edition, not his regular column at the time), on Keilor's amazing talent.and body of work; 24 hours later, Mr. Barry walked in to purchase a pair of patent leather shoes for his tuxedo since he was part of a team of writers hired to write at the Oscars. I mentioned how much I had enjoyed his article and we talked about Keilor, briefly but with deep admiration. It was a very special moment for me. The closest I've ever come to true American intellect.

I had my hopes up for a bronze bust of Keillor on a prominent spot in St.Paul, but as we all know by now, that's not how it turned out. Without leaving judgement on the reason why he had to leave, i will just say that we were sad to see him go.

I listened PHC for about 30 years and doubt that there will ever be an equal. The revised and renamed replacement lost something and I lost interest, as did PBS. The true shame is that PBS doesn't offer streamed old episodes, rather than trying to erase Keillor's legacy (or maybe it's a licencing issue, I don't know), but it's a shame either way. I make due by playing the few real episodes available on www.prairiehome.org.

As someone who grew up opposite the globe from St. Paul, Minnesota, I first heard A Prairie Home Companion because I use it, specifically Garrison Keillor's voice, to setup speaker systems of home theaters and car stereos. His voice has great texture and depth to it. If Garrison's voice sounded he has a stuffy nose subwoofer volume is too low. If he started sounding like he's in a wooden barrel, then the subwoofer is too loud. At first, I was completely disinterested to what he is saying but I started to get hooked to the weekly broadcast and fell in love with it.

It was similar to Saturday Night Live. Live sketch comedy, parody commercials, musical guests and a house band. The word is the show will be host by Chris Thule and be more of a music show. Which brings back to your question; What will they do for the four hour slot? It is live for two hours and rebroadcast on Sunday in most of the stations.

A PHC lost it's charm with the new line up ; Garrison Keillor was the heart of the show . Now , there's something missing i can't listen to it and just shrug my shoulders , turn it off .

Used to listen to that show every weekend. The guy who replaced him can certainty play and sing but his humor delivery falls flat, he's not a comedian. I stopped listening a few months back because honestly the show is awful now.

Agreed. Glad it only ran for 4 years and was cancelled because as you said , the humor just wasn't there nor the quality when Keillor left. I gave it a good chance but after a few listenings, I gave up on it also. Honestly no one could have replaced Keillor.

His detractors have nothing on him, for what- hugging to arouse feeling? The man can story-tell circles around anyone- should be proclaimed a national treasure.

I don't know how to say it any better than: "they" built him a bus and then threw him under it. I miss that show so much. I do not listen to the new show. It is not nor ever will it be the same.

Mister Grampy Obviously. Though I think this was an overreaction. By far.
