Maybe, but my takeaway is that these biometrics are a problem as you age or if you get catastrophically injured. They don’t need biometrics anyway, as noted Google Authenticator and the like work well. That non-biometric non-text 2FA is getting sidelined is concerning for me. Since I use strong, unique passwords everywhere the push for mandatory 2FA on everything doesn’t solve problems, it just wastes my time.

In the case of personally owned devices using biometric authentication, specifically with respect to fraud, this fear has never been substantiated. A personally owned device authenticating the user with locally stored biometrics, is intrinsically a form of two-factor authentication. To attempt this type of fraud, the attacker needs physical access to the device as well as a means to emulate the user’s biometric data. Garden variety fraudsters do not generally possess this capability, especially with current device facial recognition. While there’s merit in disabling biometrics to prevent law enforcement from gaining access to your device, this only works if your encryption key (ala device password) is sufficient to mitigate the brute force capabilities of the attacker. So biometric authentication plus a strong alphanumeric password as the actual encryption key beats out a six digit pin, provided you can shut down the device prior to seizure. Biometrics aren’t a silver bullet, but nothing in security is.

biometrics, unlike passwords and PIN numbers, cannot be easily changed, if at all. The barrier to entry for theft may be greater, but once a good system comes for spoofing biometric inputs, you’re essentially screwed since you can’t just change your fingerprint if a copy of it is stolen. This wouldn’t be a problem if we were implementing this system from scratch. We could take the lessons learned in modern password managers and hash the input on the device so that your biometrics never left the input device. This would be great, except there are tons of databases with my fingerprints already, so implementing these protections are useless of those databases are leaked. I don’t trust that companies who have copies of my biometrics (passwords) are going to be suddenly more secure than they used to be since passwords are leaked all the time. It’s like a monthly occurrence. This will need to be resolved before using biometrics becomes a tangible benefit to consumers.

Until they steal your biometric data instead...... lmao, compromises won't stop... would you rather your password leaked and you just change it, or your permanent biometrics leaked where your entire life, forever, could literally be compromised and FUKEDD???

@timelessfinancialservices4364 Ай бұрын
Exactly!! You can change your password, even your SSN (though the process is lengthy) but you can't change your fingerprint. Even if you can change your fingerprint, the system would be useless.

They could use non-biometric authentication like Google Authenticator or PingID, which unlike biometrics are not susceptible to replay attacks, but then they wouldn’t have your biometrics. I see the push for using only personal information (phone numbers and biometrics), which can be cloned, as by design. They (and governments) want total information, and if that isn’t actually as secure as alternative methods so what?

Yah Visa marketing directors needed a deck to present to investors. That's all. Nothing is going to change, it's been 20, yes 20 years since tap to pay, if you pay attention in retail 1 of 10 people use it. We barely got rid of checks 40 years in to debit cards. Nothing is going to change. Cause people don't change.

Love the throwback to coin. I had their card and it actually initially worked great, but their timing of launch was not great. Swipe was heading the way of the dodo, and the small problems took them too long to fix. Not totally dead as ovloop and curve as u mentioned are still around but I personally love the '1 card to rule them all' idea. Maybe visa can be the one to make it work

💍 I don’t like biometrics but I think it’s never going away at this point. I suspect that this will be a hard transition for Visa. Banks most important CC customers are probably Gen X or older and I do t think they will be jumping on an all virtual or all in one card. -ex. AMEX users v Visa users. On the other side of this Discover users probably don’t use banking in a more sophisticated way so it might not affect them much. I think the eventually this will possibly become the norm but I believe that it will be a slow/rough start.

💍 Back in 2017 when I was working one of my first jobs at a grocery store, a guy walked in with a similar “all in one” card that had a mini screen on it and two buttons to switch between cards. Always thought the idea was cool but it definitely needs to have amazing security and even better technical support to feel seamless.

Passkeys are an established technology used by Apple, Google, and Microsoft. In those cases the biometrics data is kept on those devices such as touch or face ID. Visa/their third party wouldn’t have access to this data, all they get is the passkey key from the device.

That's not completely true...I'll add that the UK, France and Canada still use checks/cheques quite often. In the EU there was over a billion checks written in 2022(which is a much smaller amount compared to the States). Now is it declining across the planet, definitely, but it is not just an American thing to do.

💍 my dream would be having one card for a single issuer. E.g. a Chase card that has the information for all of your UR family, co-branded cards, ECT. Then, you get rewarded with the highest multiplier of the cards that you have so you don't have to carry them all around. Talk about quality of life improvement to use my CSP to get 5x back on gas because that's the Chase Freedom quarter 😵‍💫

I’d switch to an Amex exclusive setup if this ever happened. I have 10 Amex cards so it’s just a matter of canceling some Visa’s ha. I have a bunch of Mastercard credit cards so no sweat, this idea is moronic and an excellent setup for scammers!

This could easily backfire. A not insignificant number of CC users like to use physical cards to flex. I've long since stopped politely mentioning to Apple Card users in front of me that they can get twice the rewards by using digital wallet, and get an ugly look, because showing the clerk their cool titanium card is more important to them than getting double the rewards. And how many Plat users pull that card out and get 1x back because they want people to see they have the Plat. I don't know what percentage exactly this demographic represents, but I would bet it's larger than some would like to admit.

I feel like single card systems would be slow to rollout & be fully optional to still use normal cards alongside switchable or make the physical switchable card appear as the desirable flex card, or just be an entirely optional system. This also presumes amex would do the same as visa, would they want their customers to get multiple cards for more earn spend rates or ideally use a mainly 1x or low earning card? Would amex want the types of customers that use buy now pay later? Brand recognition is definitely strong and something they'd maintain. Also a multi-card feels more catered to technical or card interested people, I imagine it being confusing or intimidating when many already struggle with basic apps or distrust financial instructions (ie tons of conspiracy negative comments on other announcement videos, but quite unsure if theres really that much brain rot & misinformation) Any other flex cards for visa than CSR or maybe (not sure if these are used to flex as more established/stable/not vain/lowkey rich might be) the JP Morgan Reserve?
