Joachim Peiper, a high-ranking SS officer during World War II, built his legend through his actions on the Russian front, the Italian campaign, and, above all, during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944.
At the end of the war, he was accused of having massacred American prisoners of war in what later became known as the Malmedy Massacre. For this, he was tried and sentenced to death by hanging, but his sentence was eventually commuted to 30 years in prison. However, after 11 years in Landsberg prison, he was released in December 1956. He lived only a short time in Germany, as he made the decision to move to France the following year. There he would lead a quiet and carefree life in a remote village in the south of the Gallic country.
However, on July 14, 1976, emergency services were alerted to a fire in an old house on the outskirts of the village. After extinguishing the fire, firefighters found a completely charred body in the rubble; according to official reports, the body was that of Joachim Peiper. Or not...
