It was their own fault. Stingy Bruce Gyngell put in a bid of £14 million and lost. Everyone knew TV-am licence was worth at least £30 million a year, but Gyngell, ever the sting, didn't budge, and got bitten on the ass by it. Karma always comes back.

@@johnking5174 GMTV struggled and failed to turn a profit with its bid and it was significantly reduced so in the end they were paying closer to TV-am's £14 million bid. Gyngell was right.

@@MatgoStyles Yes, but he still under bid at the time. If he had have had the balls, he would have bid like GMTV and he would have had a reduction within a year or so.

Well, TV-am was infamous for doing things on the cheap. You'd think they would have worked with ITN, but ITN refused to work with them since they were denied the application for the national breakfast franchise when it was introduced in the 1980 franchise round. Honestly, I think ITN would have been the better suitor, but I guess the IBA wanted someone outside of the 14 regional contractors running the breakfast station.

Hi, Yes Sky obviously had the contract to supply the news for TVam, I don't know how long for. IIRC Gordon Honeycombe, (former ITN newscaster) was also reading the TVam news at some point. Also, Didn't they have Colonel Philpot with the weather ? Cheers.

@@siddn Sky News was an interesting choice for Bruce Gyngell to chose for their news in 1992. Run by fellow Australian Rupert Murdoch. It was of course the new kid on the block in terms of news, only launched three years earlier, so of course they would be cheaper than say Reuters to produce the content in 1992.

@@glassowlie Not exactly true - GMTV using Reuters was only for their 6am to 7am weekday hour. GMTV still maintained their own newsroom and news gathering team. The ITC were unhappy that GMTV news coverage was poor in 1993/1994 and so to ensure they didn't lose their franchise, part of their changes was to contract the entire 6am weekday hour to Reuters who worked with the GMTV news team to provide one hour of solid news. From 7am, the GMTV news team at The London Studios continued and provided the news summaries including the weekend news, which included a Sunday morning news show. So this was very different to TV-am, who simply handed ALL of their news obligations to Sky for a one off fee of £500,000 for 11 months work.
