My last days on trail. Night hiking through Cumberland Falls, scary experiences with locals, more rain, and the excitement of finishing a thru hike. Kentucky has really been fantastic.

Join me on a thru hike of Kentucky's Sheltowee Trace Trail! Walking the length of Daniel Boone National Forest 323 miles across the state and into Tennessee. Going through well known places like the Red River Gorge, Cumberland Falls, Big South Fork National River, Cave Rune Lake, and many more.

I had a similar experience with ATVs in that area, at the time I was told they were hunting snakes but my husband thinks it’s more likely they were hunting raccoons. Congratulations on completing the trail! You have done a fabulous job of sharing Kentucky and the Sheltowee Trace.

Nice series of videos. They took me back to my 2014 Nobo thru of the Sheltowee. Mine was a bit earlier in spring, I think, than yours (it snowed on me on my final day to the N terminus on April 15) and it took me about twice as long as you, but I wasn't in any hurry. I did the Trace to retain my hiking legs for a fall AZT hike that year. Some of the other shorter trails in the east that also served as preparation for longer hikes include the Allegheny Trail (from the PA-MD border down to the AT near Pearisburg VA); the PA Mid State Trail (PA-MD border north to the PA-NY border), The Tuscarora Trail (runs parallel to the AT to the west from near Duncannon PA to near Front Royal VA where I returned nobo via the AT), the Long Trail in VT, and the Colorado Trail.

Are you familiar with John Muir's biography? Born in Scotland, emigrated with his family to Wisconsin, and (from Wikipedia) "[i]n September 1867, Muir undertook a walk of about 1,000 miles (1,600 km) from Kentucky to Florida, which he recounted in his book A Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf. He had no specific route chosen, except to go by the 'wildest, leafiest, and least trodden way I could find.'" The John Muir Trail that you encountered. must be part of that journey to Cedar Key Florida from whence he left for Cuba and California (via Panama). I gather you live in Florida. Have you visited Cedar Key Museum State Park and the area Muir stayed for several months in 1867?

I am roughly familiar! And knew he spent time in Kentucky, just thought it was funny to see another JMT out there! Makes me wonder how many trails share the same names. My uncle lives in Cedar Key so I have been to the museum, it's just been many many years.

The trail is very well marked! The roads maybe not as much, but there isn't enough roadwalk across the entire thing to really worry just as well the maps, guides, and apps do their job phenomenally.

I’ve really enjoyed watching these. Crazy to think that this is practically in my back yard. I grew up hiking and camping in the red river gorge, but didn’t learn about Sheltowee until this year.

Thanks for sharing! I had never even heard of the Sheltowee Trace Trail before this. Amazing. You mentioned doing a 300 mile hike before a thru-hike - My suggestion would be the East Coast Trail in Newfoundland (but it's just 200 miles).

That is on my list! I actually tried to do it in 2017 but some personal stuff got in the way and never made it that far. I would love to go to Newfoundland given how much I enjoyed Quebec and New Brunswick, just a skip and a hop away

Around 5:15 where you were saying that it looks like the scenery of a Jurrasic Park movie, I was thinking the same thing! Or some of the scenes from Kong Skull island. It had a good vibe to it. A hunted-down-by-monsters-in-inhospitable-land vibe, but somehow still a good one.

It definitely looks like there could be some great trad climbing in that area too. There could definitely be some great first ascents through there. We generally like Red River Gorge because it's well developed and a good amount of it has bolts drilled into the rock for sport climbing. Even for trad, a lot of us like to stick to developed areas for legality/access reasons and because trafficed routes tend to have less loose dirt and rock to deal with.

Good information! I don't know much of rock climbing other than "Damn that's a fine rock! I bet someone would love to climb it!" Kentucky has so much cool stuff it would be interesting to see more of the state take advantage of it's unique recreation opportunity.

Do you always try to "hide" from the trail, or do you simply give a 100+ft courtesy distance when camping? Sounds sketchy, but there is no way to know for sure what their motive was.

Good question I would say in less known areas like this or in places I'm not familiar with I may be hiding for my own safety, but on the Appalachian Trail for instance I go off trail as a courtesy. Both to those early risers in the morning, and so I'm personally not woken up. Kind of a visual leave no trace. Few reasons beyond these as well for camping off trail, animals use the trail just like us so sleeping away from it reduces chances of having unwanted encounters.

That trail continues to be beautiful with all those rock walls and rivers, can't believe is not more popular. Are those rock ledges not good idea for cowboy camping?

Same! I can't believe more don't do the Sheltowee, but I'm sure that will change in years time. As for sleeping under the rock ledges, I would be worried about falling rocks. Maybe not something to be fearful of in reality but since I don't have the experience I cant help but think that. Though I will say having a fire under them would be a disaster since it would heat up the rock and that would certainly make chunks fall.

Definitely your best video of this trip! Music was spot on and video was phenomenal! Seems the only problem was the lack of right of way trails, you had several encouters with people who seem aganist people hiking. I think if the park could clear up the right of way issues and unleashed dogs it would be awesome to hike alone on! Again thanks for sharing another one of your adventures!!!

Thank you Rick!!!! A marathon 24 hour straight editing to finish this video so I'm glad you enjoy!!!! And I totally agree about right of way, unfortunately some people just don't care. We have problems here in florida with this, horses, and mountain bikers using hiking only trails. In KY it was a little more extreme with the dirt bikes and ATVs but I figure some areas will just get trashed to oblivion in the end, and people will learn from their mistake in time. It seems the consciousness behind protecting these wild spaces is growing, so that makes me happy. Sharing the downsides, as well as other places where these things are ok. Some cool trails here I would love to hike, but know they are mountain bike only so I avoid them for example. Visa versa sharing alternative trails locals may not know about that they can ride.

Awesome videos. I’ve been looking to hike this trail as I’ve spent a dozen or more years rock climbing at “The Red “. A couple of quick questions: what were the dates of your hike? I’ve been camp down there in March and early April with no bugs. Also what did you do for water purification?

It was super easy!!!! The sheltowee has some wonderful remote sections but also does take you close to small little country stores here and there. If you're into some short distance hitch hiking of a few miles there are often roads to small towns too

aiden mcneil LBL is far western KY, the ST is far eastern. Opposite ends of the state.

These were Altra Superiors, they are ok but think I'll continue looking for that perfect shoe. Not wide enough for my flat feet! As for socks I either wear cheap walmart nylon dress socks or injinji

@@JupiterHikes ok that great to know because i am looking to try new shoes and good socks for next hike trip, my last hike i wore those North Face Men's Mountain Shoes and very thin mens black sheer socks, they're very see-through , i was told to wear dress socks , they work better but the shoes i didn't really like, which is why i asked cuz' i was curious, they look good

Too real!!! When I did the Florida Trail I had people hunting me down, in a friendly way. But I was averaging 40 and was generally too stressed or tired and it became a bit of something I didn't desire. Later to find someone calling me names online because I hadn't responded to a message asking where I was to accept their trail magic

@@JupiterHikes some folks don't understand the solitude that others seek on the trail. I can imagine 40 miles a day would be stressful and nobody wants to be chased by a stranger. That's moving! Did I hear that you hold the trail time there?
