I always believed that the title "Crocodile" referred to the phrase "Crocodile tears" due to the fact that no matter how disturbed and fraught she seemed at the murders she committed, she was willing to do more. So, no matter the cost, she was willing to do worse and worse things which makes her tears and emotional suffering irrelevant. Fake tears, essentially.

When watching, I actually got the impression that this occurred AFTER 15 Million Merits. This is because the Wraith Babes graphic says "Best of," suggesting the show having existed for a while. This would also explain why the song "Anyone" is so prevalent. Because Abi made it a hit. This is also compounded by the "that guy from Hot Shots" comment, suggesting something bad happened with judge Wraith, thus ending Wraith babes.
@brucenatelee
@brucenatelee 5 жыл бұрын
Those are reasonalble, but not entirely. I have to see them both again, but anybody can just say "that guy from Hot Shots," if he never cared to know his name. I forget names all the time too, even famous people. Also, maybe the song "Anyone" was already a popular song and Abi simply choosing to sing it. Maybe she made it, but I have to watch them both again.
@raphaeljackson7
@raphaeljackson7 5 жыл бұрын
@@brucenatelee brucenatelee Very fair point, but the reason I believe it was Abi making "Anyone" famous again, is because she states it was a family hand-me-down. Partly, not fully as you said, suggesting the song hasn't been around for a while. The reason I think it's Judge Wraith, and not Hope, is because of Black Mirror's reference structure with their Easter eggs. They showed Wraith Babes ad, which looked like it was ended, by saying "Best of." If there was a security violation between the two judges, I'd be more inclined to believe it's Wraith. Otherwise, why show Wraith Babes, and not Hot Shots? But you do make a fair argument. Sorry for my novel.

R SQUARED well I remember her saying her mom used to sing it to her and it was passed down, but I don’t think she meant that it was written by her family. Although I guess she probably wouldn’t have known if they did or not. I think it’s more likely that is was just a really popular song in a time beforehand. Also, with the hot shots guy thing I don’t think it necessarily means that something big or horrible happened and the best of could just be explained as the show just being around for at least a year or two minimum. But who know? Maybe you are right I guess we can’t be too sure either way.
@raphaeljackson7
@raphaeljackson7 5 жыл бұрын
@@indigoray6693 You are right, Abi's family did not write the song, I was suggesting that Abi made the song relevant again. The reason I'm certain something big happened with the Hot Shots judge is because the Hotel outright changed it's security policy. This means whatever that violation is, it could have/has effected businesses already. You are right though, we can never KNOW, but it's something to think about. I'm just happy, we can all brainstorm respectively, thank you.

This thread is fascinating. I always just assumed the hotel clerk was referring to Judge Hope regarding the tighter security on privacy issue because Judge Wraith didn’t seem like the type to indulge in “rent boys”, whereas I could see Hope... he always seemed disingenuous when discussing the adult entertainment with Abi... I’m paraphrasing here, but something like “I could see you working on Wraith’s channel, and it’s really turning me on”. It always seemed like he was trying a little too hard to sound straight or something, but this is all of course my own warped opinion and interpretation of Hope. I agree with the other theory though, that Crocodile is occurring some time in the near future of the 15 Mil Merits timeline, as “Best Of” titles typically refer to a series that has reached its finale, or hasn’t pronounced any new content for awhile. Doesn’t necessarily mean the incident with the hotel’s privacy and the mystery Judge had anything to do with that either, sometimes... well, series just end. I also liked the idea that Abi’s performance of the song, as a good singer on Hot Shot - turned porn star on Wraith Babes, would have brought an oldies song back into the spotlight. So... I’d never be able to have this conversation with anyone IRL, so I just wanna say again that this thread is awesome.

One flaw I think weakens the episode is that the insurance lady was going alone into people’s houses knowing that she could access criminal memories unrelated to accidents. Then what? Why would any employer think that’s safe to do alone.

This. It's my least-favourite episode because the plot just feels like a lazy attempt to create a dark outcome. If the memory-reading device existed and people were legally obligated to submit to it, there's no way they'd just be sending unarmed agents out solo to demand criminal evidence, because people would've started murdering them IMMEDIATELY. So the scenario that plays out isn't really interesting, because it's too predictable to have let happen at all, compared to all the other episodes with interesting unforeseen consequences to seemingly useful and well-regulated tech.

Loads of employers don’t care about low level officer admins like Shazia until something like this happens and remember this was a relatively new technology that had just been rolled out. True. The dentist/doctor was obviously peeping and checking other people's privacy, and she probably encountered things like that in the past. But it's always shortly before the insurance incident, so based on evidence she had about that person, it was virtually impossible for them to be a murderer just before witnessing an insurance incident. As murder is not exactly something you do while in the sight of others. Until of course, a freak situation occurred.

Mia's what's called a villain protagonist. Protagonist isn't interchangeable with "hero", it just refers to the main character and they can be morally good or bad; the antagonist is whoever/whatever stands directly in the way of them achieving their goals and, again, can be morally good or bad. In this case, Mia's the protagonist (since it's her story) with the goal of keeping the original murder (and all subsequent murders) hidden. Shazia is the main antagonist with Mia's ex-boyfriend and the police as secondary antagonists.

@@CamJames Can't speak for the OP but I assume it's because the husband was a grown man who at least stood a chance of defending himself. Whereas the baby was blind (so Mia had no reason to kill him and it really wouldn't have been too hard for Mia to have found out) and stood absolutely no chance of defending himself. Plus harm to children and animals naturally makes a lot of people have a more visceral reaction of shock and horror than harm to grown adults precisely because they're less able to defend themselves - that's why even in prison people who have committed crimes against children will often be shunned and targeted by other prisoners.

@@CamJames Really? You're going to presume to know whether or not I watched the episode purely based on the fact that you happen to disagree with my assessment? Okay then... And no, the husband didn't stand much of a chance. But compared with the blind baby? He stood *more* of a chance - he noticed Mia before she hit him, therefore he could have feasibly reached up to grab the hammer, for instance. It's understandable why he didn't but, again, compared to the blind baby who genuinely stood zero chance due to *being a blind baby* ..? And anyway, as I said before, harm to children and animals naturally evokes a bigger shock/horror response in most people than harm to grown adults precisely because children are seen as being less able to defend themselves (which is probably why they even included that being the final murder in the episode as opposed to having Mia just murder the husband and then leave without discovering the baby).

Mia was definitely portrayed as a crocodile. When she climbed the staircase of Anan’s house, there is a long shot of Mia’s head poking out from the staircase just as a crocodile’s head would poke out of the water. Then she carefully and quietly approached her prey. By the time Anan saw her, it was too late. Crocodile!

@karolclark791 2 жыл бұрын
Because at first it was totally not her fault and she wouldn't need to answer for it. But actually helping Rob hide the body and not reporting on it for years is what would get her jail. Killing Rob could be classified as an impulse. The way in which her character is portrayed i don't think she would would be capable to kill the infant at the beginning. She just thought she went too far to have it all ruined. And all she had to do was to tell the police that she was scared of Rob so she did as he asked. I'm sure her family could somewhat come to terms with that. But killing an infant is just way too far to give any excuse

I was always pretty sure that "Crocodile" related to the Crocodile from Peter Pan. Captain Hook was always paranoid about the ticking time bomb that was the Crocodile, terrified of what would happen if it came back to him, always running away. In this case, the incident from 15 years prior is Mia's "Crocodile". It's always there in the back of her mind, the guilt "ticking" away like the clock in the Crocodile's belly.

Personally, I think that Fifteen Million Merits, as well as Metalhead, are actually fictional stories within the mirrorverse. In Black Museum, for instance, you can see Jack reading a comic book entitled “Fifteen Million Merits”, and the page he’s reading shows Bing ranting before the hosts. Metalhead is a video game within the mirrorverse, developed by Tuckersoft, as it shows in Bandersnatch.

Thanks! I always find it so ridiculous when respectable people start saying "oh they must generate electricity". Jesus, this is about the most inefficient way possible to produce it in terms of energy input/output ratio. They have these highly advanced neuro devices that are basically a philosophers stone but need to bike for current like Neanderthals? Cycling for electricity simply makes zero sense at all and trying to rationale it into the BM-Verse is not productive. 15mio merits is a beautiful metaphorical episode that does not need to be pressed into anything.

We can’t blame the technology for Mia’s actions. You seem to waver between understanding that Mia is a cold blooded killer who would do that but also saying if the technology didn’t exist, she never would have gone on the rampage. If anyone witnessed anything that would have ruined her reputation (I’m not that convinced she was doing this for her family), she would have done everything to track them down. Her ruthlessness is clearly shown when she murders the kid. There just so happens to be a technology there that made her life easier. In this case the technology wasn’t even a gun. It was more like a dedicated Google Search

Of course she is fully to blame for her own actions, nobody is saying otherwise. Bryce Brown is just making an argument that this massive intrusion into our own minds creates a perverse incentive for people who are already immoral enough to kill other people for their own gain. Making sure there are no eyewitnesses creates a perverse incentive for "regular" criminals to become killers. That's the argument. I've been robbed at gunpoint in an unlit street and I can see how fucked up it would be to have been killed just to make sure that they wouldn't get caught. Luckily the kids who robbed me had no incentive to kill me and I'm here wasting my time on KZfaq.

The story is about the consequences of trying to hide from consequences. She goes further down the rabbit hole the more she attempts elude justice. It’s also about knowingly doing the wrong thing out of a sense of loyalty and obligation. She was the one that wanted to report the killing of the bicyclist. It was the boyfriend that set everything into motion. Without the advanced technology of the time the boyfriend simply could have confessed without implementing her but with the tech they would know she was an accomplice. The boyfriend was the initial temptation. It’s really weird to me that people think her tears are fake. It’s obvious she is dreading what she thinks she has to do. The tears are from guilt and her soul continuing to darken. She’s killing what humanity she has left with each murder. People don’t only cry when they are sad.

I just finished this episode from the first time, and I have a theory about the baby being born blind. Could it be possible that the baby being blind was a result of the constant use of the memory recaller? I loved this episode of BM because to me the darker and more disturbing the better!! But some of the reasoning is absurd: Mia’s sole purpose for killing her ex boyfriend is to keep the first murder hidden. But that’s kind of stupid because even though she helped dispose of the body she didn’t actually kill the guy on the bicycle, the boyfriend did. And the boyfriend said he was gonna send an “anonymous” note. Even if they DID track it back to him it doesn’t necessarily mean she would get in trouble and if she did it would be a fairly light sentence. As opposed to life in prison for the FIRST degree murder of the boyfriend.....

When she comes to Mia's house, she kept insisting on the fact that she was there to only talk about the Pizza truck and the speed at which it was going, and she did state whatever Mia did in the hotel room, belonged to her only. She also stated that she had seen things 'worse' (a live example would be the dentist clicking a picture of the naked guy), but she of course didn't mean someone killing someone, which freaked her out and Mia caught on and later kills her. I felt that neither Shazia or Mia were obligated to do what they did, but they did it out of love for their families, like you mentioned!

The Fifteen Million Merits link honestly blew my mind, I always wondered WHY people got income just for cycling and why were there so many bicycles. AAAAAH I love this YT channel!

Having had two guinea pigs for pets I am not sure their brains would have been complex enough to have formed memories, initially from events perceived by the visual cortex, long term enough to have shown up even just the day or so later that the engram analyzer would have recorded them. But perhaps they have a subconscious also that would have made and maintained those memories.

I'm not sure if anyone could top The Talk's (formerly known as Screenprism) analysis. It's brilliant; I'd recommend it to anyone who has yet to watch it.

I think the title also could reference crocodiles third eyelid that they use while swimming underwater. See when you try to open yours eyes underwater, its murky and you can't see anything. This could similarly be compared to trying to read someone's mind, you won't see anything. However, the corroborator, like a third eyelid, can let you see what you couldn't normally see, that being the memories of I witnesses. The third eyelid thing can also be connected to the "Third Eye", which I think is like people seeing the future or something
