The main reason why I dont like this ending isn't cause its sad; its because its an open ending with lots of symbolism and hints that Clive made it back but the face value of the events is strong no one questions a thing and assumes everything literally. The main writer of the story just confirmed Clive not only ended magic, but also the petrification curse. His hand turning was the last bits of magic left and when the red star disappeared, thats the moment where it might have saved him cause the last magical construct faded. And Jill did not know 100% for certain he died, she just assumed and lost hope - also confirmed by Maehiro the main writer.
