The final ending worked because she didn't unrealistically find some other random guy at the wedding right after doing the right thing in giving up the man she did love and was deeply attached to. Instead she was realistically hurting at the loss, and in the process of dealing with that pain. The point of the ending was that while she was suffering in the loss of one love she had another love in a dear platonic friend to help pull her out of her misery. Having him there gave her comfort and allowed her to enjoy herself in spite of her pain. It left the viewer with the feeling that she had her dear friends love and comfort to pull her through and eventually she too would move on with someone else. It left us knowing she would eventually be alright.

eh...you have a point, I guess...a modern point you must admit...but a point nonetheless...But I must also clarify that I still stand firm on my own personal opinion of how this movie should have ended. As much as you love it being "more realistic" as I'm sure you'd like to call it. As for me, a hallmark movie fan, I like watching fantasy stories where you know everyone will end up happily marrying the person they like best and because they are doing so, the audience fully believes that their life will end up a fairy tale even after the wedding (while keeping in their mind a separation between fairytales such as hallmark love stories, and real life)
@windchijmes893

@@myselfmeandi5031 How the hell would your fantasy work? Both Julianne and Kimmy love Michael; how are you going to ensure both female characters end up with him? Unless of course, what you actually meant in your comment was that you only want YOUR favourite female character to end up happy, therefore satisfying your own personal fantasy. You don't speak for other viewers. Not everyone needs a personal-fantasy ending to appreciate a movie.

True. Actually, I imagined as she dances with George, he suddenly comes out straight, confessing his feelings for her, asks him to marry her. She was too shocked to know what to do, so it was up to Mike and Kimmy to come around to counsel her after they return from their honeymoon - Mike telling her to beware about jumping at the opportunity for love, while Kimmy was getting enchanted with George, thinking he was perfect. Julianne is conflicted, but eventually agrees ton marry George... only to ditch him at the altar and run away. And so begins her streak of ditching the groom at the altar. Mike notes in his private journal his relief in dodging a bullet, knowing there was a reason he never tried to pursue a relationship with Julianne (who, since changed her name to Maggie Carpenter to protect her identity).

Not all endings are happy in real life. That’s why I loved this one because it was mainly realistic 💜 you normally end wasted and broken-hearted with a great friend beside you trying to cheer you up. That’s more likely!

Thats so true. Though in my country,the masses claim that they go to movies to get away from the daily grind of life and hence they want to see happy weddings ,posh houses, lavish lifestyles...dadada...but in last decade or so they are makin movies which as u rightly said,are realistic...broken hearts,heck even lead pair being dead.. but majorly the 'thinking class' of ppl go to such movies..not the masses.

I totally agree! That's one of the reasons why I LOVE "My Best Friend's Wedding", because they didn't stick to the old tired cliche of a typical "happy ending" at the end. I think the traditional "happy ending" would have cheapened the movie a little bit. I'm SO glad they changed the ending in time. Sometimes the girl (best friend) DOESN'T get the guy (the crush) and guess what...that's okay! It totally happened to me, and I was appreciative for this movie because I could totally understand where Julia Robert's character was coming from. I could relate, because I too didn't get the guy at the end either. :( I too had to attend my "best friend's wedding", and I handled it with charm and grace. :) Yes, inside my heart was breaking, but life goes on! :)

The ending shows just how special it is for two people to find true love - where both people are in love to the same degree with each other . If one is in more love than the other then it’s not true love ( it’s about attachment rather than true love ) true love has to be equal from both people to same degree. Julia’s character sees the groom as a belonging of hers rather than in love with his unique qualities that only he has . When you love someone you want them happy with or without you , it’s about their soul / spirit. Having ruperts character gay removes the sexual component of love for someone ( there is no other motive for his adoration of Julia’s character other than loving her soul - almost a purer kind of love ). Ruperts character really knows Julia’s character and is there because he knows how much she’s hurting. Someone who loves you anticipates their need for you at right moments. McDermott’s character is really never in tune with Julia , that’s why he doesn’t get her and she is able to play act around him , if he was right for her , she wouldn’t be able to fool him. Neither get each other. They connect only in moments . They are a great Saturday night romance but not good for each other on a Monday morning . Ruperts character anticipates that she’ll need a lift and goes out of his way to be there for her to lift her up , to let her know - yes this is sad but let’s dance - let’s be happy because as long as her mind is on McDermott she’s missing on noticing the true one that may come along in future. In the meantime let’s enjoy life and by the way she has love in her life - with him and always will be. Great ending to a charming comedy .

I love this movie. I also love that the leading lady didn't get the guy at the end. But really, Michael and Kimmy made a terrible couple so I just couldn't be happy they got married. Especially now in my 40s I can really see how a couple like that wouldn't last. The fact that he loved his job and wanted to travel and she wanted to finish college, and have him work for her dad and create a life in Chicago...that alone would stop them from lasting. Kimmy was giving everything up for Michael and she was giving hints about being resentful before they even got married. Doomed. Jules would have had him in a year tops.

Just watched this today, and maaan. I love how they written the ending. It's unconventional, yet the right answer to the story's dillema. Jules doesn't need Michael. She needs a best friend. Maybe Michael ain't really her bestie. He happens to be a person she spent most of her life with, the reason she might have been "possessive". The course of the movie shows us that George was the best friend.

Crazy how one simple change in the plot changes the whole feel and message of a movie...

This reminds me so much of Crazy-Ex-Girlfriend, where they want to shatter expectations and show that it shouldn't be an end goal to get a romantic partner. It should be to find love in yourself and be surrounded by people who love you and want your best. And sometimes that also means to let them go... or to break into (song and) dance.

Would have been nice if Philip Ingram singing Say a Little Prayer was longer. Love that dancing scene with Jules and George. Saw this movie in the theater when it came out and many times afterward.

I loved this movie because gorgeous Julia Roberts does the right thing and she is having fun with her real best friend, who just happens to be gay. Who would want to marry Michael? Seriously, he is so immature and self-centered he marries a 20 year old college dropout with one semester left because of his job. I bet if they made a sequel 10 years later Jules would have found her perfect guy, maybe a family, having dinners with Uncle George and his partner. And Kimmy would know on the door with her 3 kids, no sense of self, with her husband gone all the time with no degree to fall back on. I would have loved to see Julia build Cam up, and everyone ditch creepy Michael. Kimmy wasn't even of legal drinking age when he married her. Jules and George were the "modern" couple. Kimmy and Michael were straight out of the 1950's. It was the perfect ending.

I was 8 years old when I saw this movie in the middle of the night on an international flight back to the States. It spoke to to me then. It's the only "chick flick" I like til this day. Watch it at least once a year. This movie and Jerry Maguire are the perfect test movies to determine the genuineness of somebody you first begin dating.
