The most annoying thing about mikayla is that once caught, she just tries to make her audience feel stupid. The false lashes is not the first time this has happened. She HEAVILY filters and facetunes everything and then lies to her young, impressionable audience. These poor kids are growing up with the same unrealistic standards due to lies spread for the influencers income. Thank you so much for covering this topic. It needs to be said!

Also, not the first time she lied for a product, I remember a particular eye makeup remover that I had to throw away, then I saw she used it once, conveniently cut and then "omg, it removed my makeup so easily!" Buuullshit! She lies very often, this is just the first time it was undeniable. I don't get why Hanna think's she's genuine but she's the opposite to me

it’s sad because she’s very open about her insecurities. yet instead of being open and honest about how she uses makeup as an outlet, she lies to girls the same way she was probably lied to, continuing the cycle of insecurities

She never looks the same in any of her pictures . She looks really thin sometimes, really plump, midsize, her lip size changes, her eyes change . It’s so sad how much she changes herself for the camera. She is pretty so it’s just very unfortunate to see her be insecure.

Now she’s out here saying she’s lucky that she never had to struggle with acne and just has a naturally perfect, poreless complexion! Makeup is an amazing outlet and helps so many people, but everyone has insecurities. Lying about them helps no one. If she would just come out and say “I use a filter because I’m insecure about my skin texture” the problem would be solved!

She also has a history of doing foundation and concealer reviews with the beauty filter on. So she has shown multiple times in different ways that she'll lie about how a product looks for a check.

And I think, as far as people calling her out, it's gotten to the point that she starts blocking people who try to hold her accountable. Plus, in the past, hasn't she justified lying/acting in poor judgment by crying and blaming it on her mental health/stress from wedding planning?

When some product is talked about everywhere on social media, even if it is good or total sh*t, the sales go up. I don't think they did it with this mascara on purpose, but the fact that everybody is jumping in to the line of making a video about this product, it made the job.

I remember when I was in middle school and Taylor Swift's Covergirl campaign was literally banned from advertising in Australia because it was so false: too many lash extensions, too much editing, etc. People BEEN having a problem with this deceptive marketing towards vulnerable youth and I'm honestly glad it's still happening.

I work for a company that Mikayla did a partnership with, and she used a body slimming filter on her video for them. We got SO many callouts and complaints about her and the entire situation. I feel like influencers and celebs do not think about how their actions will also negatively affect the people who work for the brands that have no power or control over these types of deals/collabs but are the direct contact for everyday consumers/customers.

I feel like on tiktok alot of younger girls like 15 to 20 didn't watch JS on KZfaq so they hear about him being scandalous and they think it's what he did a long time ago when he made those racist comments. It is honestly sad how hard it is to get a honest opinion and genuine information about beauty products and things of that realm. I’m in beauty school right now and it really makes me realize how it’s not just influencers who lie and scam, it is beauty companies, educators, brand ambassadors, employers, etc. I am starting to think maybe because it is a demographic of mostly women that these people think they can get away with lying, scamming, and just all around being a nasty, dishonest person.

Old school beauty KZfaq was wild, guys. I recently started wearing makeup again after a 3-year hiatus. I was throwing away soooooo much old and expired stuff. I, like a lot of people, fell into this trap of massively overconsuming because of what these KZfaqrs insisted were “must buy” products. Well, years later, most of that hard earned thousands of dollars I spent at Sephora went directly into my garbage can having been used once or twice, and I’m not gonna lie, it hurt! I could have put that money towards something I’d actually enjoy, but I literally tossed it in the trash. Anyway, I am re-buying only what I loved (mostly Viseart and Nars stuff, they will rarely fail you), and I am NOT falling into that overbuying trap again. I worry that the people on TikTok are starting that overconsumption cycle with a new generation.

I couldn't agree more!! The amount of makeup I bought from 2016-2019 could have been saved or spent on something much more beneficial. Morphe products, Sephora/Ulta trips, Jeffree Star palettes...the list goes on 😭Once the pandemic hit and I started working from home I decided to give my face (and wallet) a break and haven't looked back. I still love makeup and treat myself once in a while to something nice, but I'm not obsessive like I used to be. I was a broke college kid too back then and still gave in to all the hyped-up products and launches. Those were craaaaazy times.

Yes! We learned and now we know what works for us and what’s worth it. I don’t believe that a product works for everyone, I can count on one hand the amount of viral products I bought that turned up being actual favorites.

Are basically all of the products in her last declutter (2 years ago) expired now? Yes (although some are still usable). 1 year ago she did a face full of makeup she doesnt use and decluttered a couple items.. But its interesting to see a large collection gone through and opinions change! No need to have an attitude :)

I definitely prefer lower key people and I’d love to know if a product is “just okay”, but idk maybe it’s my age. A what I’ve also learned from this is jeffree is more addicted to any sort of attention he can get more than even I realized…like that’s why he blackmails or attempts to backmail everyone he comes in contact with…I’m sure the quiet period he was gone ate him up inside and he was desperate to find something to latch back onto no matter how crazy it made him look…the Mikayla thing is gross as hell but I’m even more mad it awoken him from his slumber like the monster he is

This is all very interesting. I stopped watching beauty KZfaq right around the time that all the Jeffree, James, tati drama happened, but you are right: the cycle continues. The beauty community will not change. The biggest takeaway from this for me, is that L'Oreal (or insert any company name here) gets out unscathed. They pay a scapegoat tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars to sell a product and when the influencer fucks up like this, the brand still made their cash while the influencer is cancelled. L'Oreal can move on to the next person to pay to sell their products. This is why brands love influencers. L'Oreal didn't make this mistake; Mikayla did because she was under the influence of the brand's money. Why did Mikaela feel like she needed to use falsies in the first place? Bc the mascara sucks, probably.

i look homeless bc i work remote often recently. lmao but if i have an hour, i can BE ready. give me two, you won’t recognize the homeless woman who was a graphic designer. i am runway. lmao it’s so nice to NOT GO THRU IT. and i get to save all my fav cosmetics and use them occasionally instead of daily and needing more in a month. i’ve also learned to really love skin care instead. you don’t even need a super long time to glow up when your skin is glowing already! i’ve learned to love my skin, and not try to cover so much. i’ll still beat my face tho for the right event.

I wore make up to work every day until March 2020 but working from home I stopped wearing it. But I am trying to get into getting up and putting on makeup and getting dressed even if it’s yoga pants and a T-shirt. I am enjoying just the art of putting the makeup on. I have so much makeup I want to use it and enjoy it. But I just do it for myself now.

Thank you for talking about how stressful it is for "the common person" vs influencers. They are allowed to feel overwhelmed and stressed but it's not in the same vein as someone doing backbreaking labor all day or someone on disability and barely making it or not even making it.

I really appreciate you because your takes are always timely and measured, and always give your unique perspective and insight. I've heard people say that falsie-gate might have been intentional outrage marketing because it incentivized people to go out and 'fact check' by getting the mascara she used. I'm unsure about that but I thought it was an interesting thought that companies are starting to get the beauty community cycle and are profiting from the drama intentionally.

Extreme short form content like TikTok and Twitter makes people overly reactionary. Lately though I have found a ton of creators here who have subscribers in the very low thousands, who are extremely chill and honest, not so high energy or excessively fake positive. This is the sort of content I love seeing from you.

Totally agree with this. We are absolutely destroying people’s reward stations, selective attention, and impulse control neurologically with this instant gratification in your face shit. How will this affect kids who spend all their time on there and then have to adjust to the real world as adults? It's just crazy

@@laylarivera8647 I quit using both platforms I mentioned. Because on one you are constantly getting a stream of emotional highs and lows. Especially the really awful stories people tell. I respect that it's a good platform to do that, but it was still a lot. And on the other you have all the American political fighting in a box.

17:41 I completely understand what you mean. I think with the amount of BS that happened with a lot of influencer, and the lack of repercussions definitely soured my mood with beauty drama. This drama is being covered on a lot of channels, but I wouldn't have known that since I don't have Tiktok. When I heard about it I was like "Huh, people are angry at an influencer for faking a review. The way people are reacting, I though someone got mentally scarred."
