Discovered to be an Allied spy, Caravaggio (Willem Dafoe) must pay a gruesome price for his freedom.
In this scene: David Caravaggio (Willem Dafoe), Count Laszlo de Almásy (Ralph Fiennes)
About The English Patient:
In a field hospital in Italy, Hana, a nurse from Canada, is caring for a pilot who was horribly burned in a plane wreck; he has no identification and cannot remember his name, so he’s known simply as “the English Patient,” thanks to his accent. When the hospital is forced to evacuate, Hana determines en route that the patient shouldn’t be moved far due to his fragile condition, so the two are left in a monastery to be picked up later. In time, Hana begins to piece together the patient’s story from the shards of his memories.
Starring, in alphabetical order: Naveen Andrews, Juliette Binoche, Willem Dafoe, Ralph Fiennes, Colin Firth, Kristin Scott Thomas

So in the late 90’s when I was a young kid I was chilling in my mom’s room flipping through the channels and ended up on the Encore channel while this scene was playing. I didn’t know the story, didn’t know who the character was or why he was in this predicament, but let me tell you how badly this scene messed with my head at the time. It stayed with me for several days and haunted me in a way. Got around to finally watching the whole thing as an adult and I just love this movie.

the movie is manipulative, but so is the very very shot book on which it was based... But that's not a criticism, but a observation

He starred in Lynch's Dune as Duke Leto. He was also in Carpenter's In the mouth of madness. A great actor, a shame he wasn't in more films.

the worst and the best thing about this scene is that the German commander isn't trying to be evil... he's just trying to be practical... and angry that the asshole prisoner doesn't cooperate...

@@memati7199 They were going to send A couple of SS Divisions. But by that point in 1943 it was too late. The African Front was basically lost. Besides, the Southern Russian Front was a complete freefall and was top priority (Army Group Berta was decimated at Stalingrad and Army Group Anton was endangered of being cut off). So the SS were sent their to stabilize the situation.

@@memati7199 Not really simply because of the Royal Navy. Nobody talks about it but It THE main reason why Germany lost the Africa Front was because of the Royal Navy intercepting and destroying the German supply lines (which included fuel) to the Panzerarmee Afrika (Later on as Armee Gruppe Afrika from Feb 1943 till it collapse in May 1943). So by the time Monty and the US launched their push. The German/Italian Army was practically on the verge of collapse. The BIG reason Germany lost the war was because they were VERY poor at logistics. It was actually a miracle that Rommel held on for so long. Any lesser commander the Front would have concluded by October 1942 is not sooner. In Short the Royal Navy simply "turned off the faucet." Source: Oberst Eduard "Edu" Neumann, Geschwaderkommodore of JG27 Major Winrich Behr of the 21st Panzer Division (he would later be in Stalingrad with the 6th Army but was VERY lucky to get out of the pocket before they surrendered) and Leutnant Günter Halm of the 21st Panzer Division the youngest member of the Afrika Korps to be awarded the Knight's Cross for his bravery in action.
